Sharkey Family Back In Floral and Greenhouses

After a 5-year gap, members of the Sharkey family again own the floral shop/greenhouse at 305 Henriette Ave., Crivitz, the business founded by Katie and Arly Sharkey nearly thirty years ago.

A grand opening and open house to celebrate are slated for Saturday, Oct. 13, with refreshments and prizes.

The business was sold when the elder Sharkey’s “retired” in 2002. On Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007 their son, Scott and his wife, Amy, purchased the property from Farmer’s & Merchants Bank. They open for business again under the old name of Sharkey’s Floral and Greenhouses on Monday, Sept. 10. They are continuing a full service wholesale and retail florist tradition with Teleflora and FTD service and custom design of arrangements for weddings, funerals, and other special events, as well as sale of live plants and corsages for proms, homecomings, etc. The greenhouse will reopen in spring.

They plan to keep the old name - Sharkey’s Floral and Greenhouses, because they feel it is well known and well respected in the area. They plan to move into the attached living quarters with their children Samantha, 5, and Alex, 3. Business hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They plan longer hours to accommodate holiday shoppers during busy seasons.

Katie Sharkey is serving as advisor and designer, putting her 32 years experience in the floral business to good use. Arly is keeping busy with Sharkey’s Orchard on a property they purchased across from the Pines Motel on Hwy. 141 just north of Crivitz. In spring of 2007 they planted 300 apple trees. They plan to add 400 trees in spring of 2008 and to eventually have 1,200 trees. Since it takes three years to produce apples, they expect to harvest their first crop in 2010.

Arly and Katie are thrilled with the way things have turned out. “It’s great to have Scott and Amy continue with the Sharkey tradition in the floral business,” Arly declared. “It’s been a dream to have our kids continue with our life’s work.” He said customer service was the key to their success.

Scott said he and Amy plan to expand the grenhouses and expand on the success the family had for over 32 years. He said he is really excited about the support shown by family and the community in Crivitz and Wausaukee and the entire surrounding area. “We hope all our friends and former Sharkey customers will be back.”

Scott, 31, is a 1994 graduate of Crivitz High School. Amy, a 1995 graduate of Coleman High School, is the daughter of Darrel and Alice Bieber of Pound. They were married on Aug. 9, 1997. Amy operated a home based craft business for seven years. Scott worked for Hasbro Toys in Cincinnati. In 2001 they moved to Sturgeon Bay, where he was employed at a toy invention studio for four years. In 2004 they moved to Crivitz. He is employed at PDQ in Green Bay, designing car wash equipment.

Scott said for a long time he had wanted to move back to Crivitz because they both like the area. Then this opportunity came along “and everything just fell into place.”

Operating a florist shop and greenhouse was something of a natural for Arly and Katie Sharkey. He said as a kid growing up in Escanaba he was always fascinated by greenhouses. In fact, he eventually bought property in Escanaba and built three greenhouses there, which he sold eventually when he decided to concentrate on expanding in Crivitz.

Arly came to Crivitz in 1963. He operated Sharkey’s Radio and TV in a building on Hwy. 141, next door to what today is the American Legion Building. He purchased the site that became Sharkey’s Floral from the railroad in 1967, intending to build a new TV/radio shop there.

Katie (Karn) Sharkey, came from western Minnesota to teach math at Coleman. A year later, on June 19, 1971 she and Sharkey were married. They started construction on the present building in 1972 and operated it as a miniature golf course for three years. Sharkey’s TV and Appliance, meanwhile, became the first shop in the area to sell color TVs and microwaves.

In 1976 Arly and Katie built a small greenhouse in back and offered bedding plants for sale in the store front. Mother’s Day, 1976, was their first day in the Florist business. They ordered 25 each of red, white and pink carnations (a total of 75 flowers) and a dozen orchids. They worried about the investment, wondered if they would sell them. On Mother’s Day 2002, shortly before they sold the business to Vickie Jungblut, they bought 2,000 carnations for resale.

Katie said Marion and Frank Ermenc taught her the florist business.

Arly and Katie said they both found watching plants grow and seeing them bloom very rewarding, especially those they started from seeds. Once they had 3,600 poinsettia plants growing at one time. They found Easter Lilies hardest to grow and get to boom at the right time because Easter falls on varying dates.

In addition to Scott, the Sharkey children are Michael and his wife, Trista, who live in Minnesota, where Trista is a teacher and Michael practices law. Incidentally, both are former funeral directors.
