Cavalier Standout Does It With His Arm and Bat Wausaukee and Peshtigo may have split the conference championship this season in the balanced M & O, but it was Jordan Powers of STAA/Lena that was named the league’s player of the year.
Powers, a solid infielder and a good pitcher, was also a solid hitter in his leadoff spot for the Cavaliers, as he earned recognition from coaches around the league.
He was a unanimous selection to the league’s first team as an infielder, as he anchored the Cavalier defense with his strong play at shortstop.
No team had more than two representatives on the first team, while all teams were represented by at least one player.
Powers was the lone first teamer from STAA/Lena, while league co-champs Wausaukee and Peshtigo combined for just three.
Wausaukee’s only first-team selection was Brad Taylor, who was a unanimous choice as one of the first-team pitchers.
The other pitcher is Alex Zielinski of Crivitz, one of just two non-seniors on the first team.
Taylor and Zielinski both shouldered quite a bit of the offensive load as well for their teams, as they both were predominantly the three hitters in their respective lineups.
The only other non-senior on the first team was Gillett catcher Brandon Estep, who was the third and final unanimous choice to the first team.
Estep was a solid backstop for the Tigers, while also hitting well in the top part of the order.
Powers was joined in the infield by fellow shortstop Austin Tress of Peshtigo. Tress, who batted second for the co-champs, also was a second-team pitcher.
Coleman’s Mike Rogodzinski (first base) and Gillett’s Joe Socha (third base) were also named to the first team infield.
Rogodzinski was normally the two hitter in Coleman’s lineup, whie Socha batted cleanup for the Tigers.
The rest of the first team was made up of outfielders Kyle Kovnesky of Coleman, Nate Michalski of Peshtigo, and Ted Voss of Crivitz.
Kovnesky, who also played shortstop and first base along with any outfield position, was also named to the league’s second team as a pitcher.
He batted leadoff for the Cougars.
Voss, who played center field and also pitched for Crivitz, brought his speed and contact to the top of the order for the Wolverines.
Michalski, also a center fielder, was Peshtigo’s cleanup hitter.
Kovnesky and Tress were the second-team pitchers, while Marcus Mergener of Coleman was the second-team catcher.
The second-team infield was made up of senior Mike Engelmann of Wausaukee, as well as juniors Pat Caine of Wausaukee, Eric Grom of Peshtigo, and Kyle Johnston of Crivitz.
Engelmann played first base for the Rangers, while Caine was shortstop, Grom played second and pitched, and Johnston was at third base.
The second-team outfield consists of seniors Tyler Woodke of Gillett and Erin Folgert of STAA/Lena, and Jordan Stumbris of Wausaukee.
Woodke manned center for the Tigers, while Folgert played all over in the outfield, and Stumbris was a left fielder.
The honorable mention list is made up of senior Derek Schwartz of Crivitz, juniors Tyler Bushmaker of Coleman, Kevin Betts of STAA/Lena and Ryan Suennen of Wausaukee, and sophomore Nick Krause of Gillett.
