Departments Hold Joint MABAS Training Monday

Firefighters from three area departments along with the Marinette County dispatch center held a two hour MABAS training session Monday, April 20. Purpose of the training was to have firefighters get used to using MABAS protocol and to aid with departments working together more efficiently. MABAS stands for Mutual Aid Box Alarm System and has been active in Marinette County since Jan. 1.

Revive Peshtigo Fish Viewing Platform Project

There is progress on the proposed Peshtigo Fish Viewing Platform project on the existing pillars below the dam on the Peshtigo River in the City of Peshtigo.

The city is currently requesting qualification proposals from architect/engineering consultants for design and construction administration for construction of the platform.

The existing pillars remain from a former pipe tunnel to pipe steam and pulp from a former paper pulp mill on the east side of the river to the paper plant. Three pillars, 50-feet apart would be used and...

County Board Says Add Deputies, Find Funding

Shawn Henessee will have his hands full when he starts work Monday, May 18 as Marinette County Administrator. At its meeting Tuesday, April 21 County Board approved a motion “to hire two additional Sheriff Office deputy positions effective January 1, 2016 , pending Finance Committee Funding,” and a bit later in the meeting, a separate motion, this one from the Finance Committee, to “Approve funding two Deputy Sheriff positions effective January 1, 2016 with a directive to the County Administrator to provide funding options.”

Marinette Co. Confirms Wish To End Airport Partnership

Marinette County Board’s Executive Committee on Tuesday, April 21 reaffirmed its desire to end its 40-year Twin County Airport partnership with Menominee County.

Following 45 minutes of closed door discussions after the morning County Board meeting with 11 of the Executive Committee’s 12 members present, vote was unanimous in support of a motion by Supervisor Melissa Christiansen authorizing Corporation Counsel Gale Mattison to continue negotiations with Menominee County toward dissolution of the airport partnership, “within the paramet...

Schingick Retiring After 32 Years As Crossing Guard

When the current school year ends, so will Rose Schingick’s 32-year career as a safety crossing guard at the corner of Green Street and Emery Avenue in Peshtigo. The “little old lady on the corner” will no longer be there, braving wind, cold and snow to help youngsters safely cross from one side of the street to the other. Schingick, 78, has announced plans to retire effective Friday, June 5, after helping the last batch of kids at her special corner cross safely from one side of the street to the other.
