Defense Rescues Titans in 12-0 Win; Suring, Wausaukee Roll

Opening weekend proved successful for M-O Conference teams, chalking up 5 victories in 7 clashes. Four of those first week wins came over Northern Lakes opponents, three by shutouts, as the M-O squads owned a 119-7 scoring edge.

Conference victories included Gillett over Three Lakes 14-7, Peshtigo stopped Oconto 21-6, STAA-Lena used a huge defensive effort to blank Crandon 12-0, Suring leveled Laona-Wabeno 49-0 and Wausaukee barely broke a sweat in whipping White Lake-Elcho 44-0.

Fast Start Not Enough As Marines Falter 28-20

Scoring on their opening two possessions wasn’t enough as Marinette came up short in their bid to upend defending Bay Conference co-champion Shawano Friday night 28-20.

The Marines built up a 14-0 first quarter lead and maintained the upper hand at intermission 20-7. Unfortunately there are two halves to a game and Shawano dominated the final 24 minutes with 21 unanswered points.

Menominee Whips Wrightstown 33-12

The talented and quick Menominee Maroons opened their season with a flurry of points in whipping Wrightstown Friday night 33-12. The Maroons enjoyed a 27-0 cushion after three quarters before the visiting Tigers registered a pair of consolation touchdowns over the final 12 minutes.

It was a dominating win for Menominee, which is expected to have a successful season and advance deep into the Michigan playoffs. But don’t tell that to veteran coach Ken Hofer, who saw plenty of things for his team to work on.
