Letter to the Editor:

The Friends of the Stephenson Public Library in Marinette acknowledge the very generous gift from the estate of Miss Edna Reinke. Our organization is fortunate Edna entrusted us to use these funds for many future special presentations and projects at the library not covered by the library operating budget.

Margaret Monroe,

Treasurer

Dear Editor:

I would like to take this opportunity to let the community know what a fabulous asset NWTC is to our area. On Thursday, March 4, instructors and students hosted a Career Day for area 4th and 5th grade students. Peshtigo Elementary 5th grade students participated in a half-day, hands-on learning time on the NWTC-Marinette campus coordinated by Pat O’Hara and Anne Bradford. Instructors and current students hosted a preview of computer support specialists, nursing, machine tool, welding, and fire protection programs. This unique opportunity allowed the students a chance to see what possibilities lay ahead for them if they work hard in school.

The educational opportunity this provides for our students is priceless! Videos and virtual field trips are great, but a hands-on, get in there and feel it happening opportunity is irreplaceable. Instructors Maureen Colenso, George Wolard, Jane Swanson, Natalie Lashmet, Dale Lange and Anton Dziekon-ski did a fantastic job of highlighting their programs and involving students in activities. Not only did the students see how school subjects apply to real-life jobs, but the instructors encouraged students to value learning and make the most of every opportunity.

Well done NWTC and well done Marinette County for helping to provide such a valuable resource! Thank you again for enriching the lives of our students and providing an important educational support for all of us.

Sincerely,

Cindy Verschay,

School Counselor

Letter to the Editor:

I want to congratulate and thank the Coleman wrestling team and coaches for their efforts this season. Even if they hadn’t won the state team championship, it would have been another great year for the Coleman wrestling program.

A special thanks to Kevin Casper, Tim Gould, Keith Long and all the volunteer coaches along with other volunteers who make the Coleman program special from top to bottom. They all keep a lot of young people going in a positive direction, teaching them to set goals, work hard and be disciplined. A lot of good can be reaped by our younger generation from the positive leadership which we have in the program in Coleman.

Thank you!

Roger Pillath

Peshtigo Times:

Coleman Wrestling Community:

I would like to thank the many people and organizations that have played a role in our story book State Championship season. You fans are the greatest. The testament to that was your following all season but at state the Cougars had more fans than any other school and that includes Division 1 and Division 2 schools.

The amount of fans to welcome us back at school on Sunday was overwhelming. Your support means a lot to our wrestlers. We thank area businesses for your support through tall the billboards and signs. Thank you, police, fire and rescue squad for parading us through town, not just this year but every year. You don’t realize how much that means to the wrestlers and is something they look forward to.

Parents, thank you for all your support and allowing us to coach your sons. You have the greatest kids in the world, young men that you can be very proud of. I love them like they are my own.

Thank you to the Coleman Booster Club and Coleman Wrestling Club for all you do. Thank you to my assistant coaches, Tim Gould, Jason Maye and Karl Casper. You guys are the best.

Thank you also, Mr. Heyroth, Ms. Kostrova and the pep band for playing at state. It was awesome having you there and you made the atmosphere electric. It says a lot when the smallest school is the only one that brings a band.

I would also like to thank the media outlets for all your coverage throughout the season. It has been an amazing season, one that will be remembered forever.

Coach Kevin Casper,

Coleman Wrestling

Editor:

March 14-20 is Sunshine Week. It is important to recognize this national initiative which focuses attention on the importance of open government and the public’s right to know.

Citizen oversight of the workings of government is essential to democratic government and our confidence in it. Citizen access to public records and meetings of governmental bodies is a vital aspect of this principle. As the state’s chief law enforcement officer, I am deeply committed to promoting compliance with Wisconsin’s open meetings and public records laws.

Educating the public and public employees is the best way to enforce these laws. That is why since I’ve been Attorney General, the Department of Justice has committed increased resources to helping civic leaders, government employees and the public better understand their rights and responsibilities.

In 2007 and 2008, the Department hosted 11 free seminars across the state to promote public awareness of and compliance with the open meetings and public records laws. Over 1,500 citizens and public officials registered for the seminars, more than twice the attendance from the previous two year period. In 2009 the Department hosted 19 free seminars across the state training over 1,800 citizens. For the first time the Department offered many of these training opportunities via videoconferencing. Recently, the Department hosted the first ever specialized training session for members of Wisconsin’s law enforcement community on Wisconsin’s Public Records laws. The specialized training was geared specifically to the context of law enforcement. Two hundred and sixty-eight law enforcement professionals participated in this specialized training.

As well, our office provides informative compliance guides on the open meetings and public records laws. The publications answer recurring questions of citizens and public employees alike and are posted on the Department’s website to download, copy, and share.

Every day the Department helps people seeking to understand their rights and obligations under the open meetings and public records laws. This is the one area where, by statute, the Department is authorized to give legal advice to citizens. Since I became Attorney General, our office has answered thousands of requests for advice and guidance. Department attorneys assisting in this way report increased compliance as a direct result.

As principal statewide interpreter of the open meetings and public records laws, I represent the state’s interest in the orderly and proper development of the open meetings and public records laws. In State ex rel. Buswell v. Tomah Area School District, the Department went before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and urged reversal of a bright-line rule that permitted an almost unlimited degree of generality when giving notice of the subject matter of a meeting. The court adopted the Department’s approach. As a result, Wisconsin citizens are entitled to receive more meaningful notice than was required under previously decided case law.

I welcome the opportunity that Sunshine Week provides to focus on the need for and importance of open government and access to information about the workings of your government. I cannot overstate the importance of full compliance of the state’s open meetings and public records laws. To that end, I invite all citizens and government entities to contact the Department of Justice whenever our legal service in offering advice in this area can be of help to you.

J.B. Van Hollen

State Attorney General

To the Editor:

In the Feb. 24 edition of the Peshtigo Times, an article stated that a member of the Wausaukee Fire Department was using department equipment for illegal personal use. The article stated this individual, “A volunteer firefighter for the Wausaukee Fire Department, was worried when a helicopter flew over his property, so he got a thermal measuring instrument from the fire department to see if law enforcement could detect his marijuana plants.”

I would first like to state, the individual mentioned in the article is not and never has been a member of the Wausaukee Fire Department. Second, the residents of Wausaukee and supporters of the Wausaukee Fire Department should be assured, the Wausaukee Fire Department does not condone the use of fire department equipment for any reason other than fire department operations.

We as volunteer firefighters for the Wausaukee Fire Depart-ment take great pride in being a professional group of individuals and are very proud of who we are, what we do, and what we have done and continue to do for our community.

Sincerely,

Jason Figas, Assistant Chief,

Wausaukee Fire Department

Letter to the Editor:

The past few years have been very trying for most Americans being faced with the worst recession in our history, our country being enthralled in two wars and continual threats to our safety and well being. For many it is a struggle to just get by day to day.

During this time we can be faced with periods of doubt and questioning why are these things happening to me/us. It can often lead to loss of hope and questioning our faith.

Christians have now entered into the season of Lent and are preparing for the Crucification and Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Many see this as a time of atonement when they have a look at themselves and strive to change for the better.

This is a period of renewing ourselves and our hope that things can and will get better for all of us.

If you and your family are at a loss with your Faith and find a need for renewing your Spirituality I invite you to come and worship with the family of St Paul's Episcopal Church. We celebrate the Eucharist every Sunday at 10 a.m. Our address is 917 Church St. Marinette, and our phone number is 735-3719.

I had been that individual who had lost faith and was in need of regaining direction in my spiritual life. St. Paul's has given me what I was seeking and continues to guide me. I want to share this with you as it has been a wonderful experience for me.

St Paul's welcomes all who attend their Eucharistic service with the following statement “Whoever you are, wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome to receive Holy Communion at the Lord's Table”.

Please come and take a look at St. Paul's where we offer: Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds

Thank you,

Dennis M. Dieck
