Library Begins 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program

Issue Date: March 28, 2011

At the Thursday, March 17 regular meeting of the Marinette County Consolidated Public Library Board Library Director Jennifer Thiele reported on her activities and the spectrum of services provided at Stephenson Public Library and the branch libraries at Peshtgo, Wausaukee, Goodman and Niagara. She said she had done some cleaning up at the Coleman Branch of things that no longer had any use. She also reported on a convention in Madison where she will do a presentation. The meeting approved the agenda minutes, schedule of invoices and budget review and transfers.

The report of Adult Services which showed a variety of programs including adult outreach to Northland Village, the Marinette Senior Center and the Renaissance Rretirement home was distributed.

A new outreach initiative providing books for the Marinette County Jail was discussed. Paperbacks are welcome with a few stipulations as to content.

On Friday, April 8 Scott Reuss of the UW-Extension Office will be at the Marinette Library to teach the public how to start a manageable vegetable garden. He will also go to the Wausaukee Library on Monday, April 11 at 4 p.m.

Director Thiele discussed disposal of leftover shelving for which a bid has been received and improved cash accounting with less money handled by the staff means fewer mistakes and less time spent counting money.

A report from the Children’s Librarian Adeline Miller told of Preschool Story Time averaging about 22 people per session including children and parents, and a Saturday Family Story Hour. The last one on March 12 had 12 persons in attendance.

She also told of beginning a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program to encourage caregivers to read 1000 books to infants-preschoolers before they start kindergarten. It is to help children build their early literary skills and to prepare them for the task of learning to read.

As of April 1st movies will be shown at the library. Walt Disney’s version of Rapunzel is scheduled for April 9th and Harry Potter on Apil 23rd.

Planning for One World, Many Stories, the 2010 Summer Reading Club has confirmed bookings with three entertainers for the summer.
