To the Editor:

What a marvelous program the Lena Public School’s Music Department presented on Veterans Day. Mrs. Mary Ann Glime and her students put on a superb presentation in honor of all veterans. I am sure that all the veterans that attended were in awe of how all the students conducted themselves. The conduct of the student body would serve as a great example to any other school on how to show respect to the present and past veterans that have given so much to protect our freedom.

Tom Bitters, Commander of the Lena American Legion Post, gave an excellent introductory speech. This year, the Korean War Veterans were recognized. Paul Bednarik, Past Post Commander, had the Korean War veterans stand to be recognized while he read statements that were made by these veterans upon arriving home from service.

It should also be noted that teachers in the grade school prepared their students well in welcoming the veterans. Mrs. Jenson’s Family Living class prepared and served the snacks and refreshments after the ceremony. What a courteous group of students. Lena’s students and teachers should be commended for doing such a great job.

Letter to the Editor:

Town of Brazeau, I have an update on the activities of two members of the Brazeau Town Board. Darrell Enix has now received $2,139.81 for mileage and reimbursements and James Hanna has received $674.39 since taking office in early April 2011. Prior to taking office Enix stated no public official should request mileage reimbursement while traveling on town business. He must be an exception.

In June 2011 Enix requested 19 hours of highway wages for work on Tank Lane that should have been done by a hired engineer, a hired surveyor or town employees. Eight and a half (8.5) of those hours were to the Volm Co. in Antigo, where Enix purchased highway supplies. This company delivers their products free of charge to their customers. These products could also be acquired locally.

On Sept. 12 Enix prepared and delivered bid ads to the Peshtigo Times in Peshtigo at a cost of$28.86. The preparation of these ads and their submission by fax should be done by the Town Clerk with no additional cost.

On Sept. 29, Hanna and Enix attended a Wisconsin Towns Association Budget Workshop in DePere. Did the term “less spending” enter their minds? No! They did not go together to DePere. Enix charged the town $67.15 for 121 miles and Hanna charged $64.38 for 116 miles. All of these claims and others have been approved by them. Hanna and Enix, legally, should abstain from voting on their wages and reimbursements, since doing so is a conflict of interest.

At a Nov. 1 special meeting, Treasurer Karen Enix was authorized, by Enix & Hanna, to purchase her second printer in a year and a half. What has happened to the printer purchased in the spring of 2010 and the printer that was in her office for the past 10 years? No one knows! She was also given permission to take her laptop computer home. The former board believed town property should remain on town premises. And then there is the issue of the treasurer’s mileage requests. She makes deposits at the Peshtigo National Bank in Oconto Falls on the days that she works at the Community Memorial Hospital. Are we paying her to go to work? Have they forgotten their campaign promise of “Lower Taxes and Less Spending”? It appears so!

The Town of Brazeau Budget Hearing was postponed and will now be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Brazeau Town Hall.

Dear Editor:

Christmas finds us mired in a slowly recovering economy. Many of our neighbors have lost much � their jobs and incomes, their savings, their possessions, their utilities, some even their homes. Many in our community are suffering.

Take a moment to reflect on your blessings. Then, in that “old-fashioned” spirit of neighborly caring and concern decide how you might help a family in need this Christmas.

Some ideas to consider are take a child’s name from the Angel Tree at Pine Tree Mall, Shopko or Wal-Mart and buy gifts for that child, then return them unwrapped by Dec. 12; buy one or several turkeys and donate them to our Christmas program.

Also, adopt a family by calling 715-735-9100 ext. 106 and leave name and phone number for the Adoption Coordinator. Persons can purchase a gift card from a local merchant or WPS and mail it or send a check to help defray costs to Society of St. Vincent de Paul - St. Joseph Conference, P.O. Box 563, Marinette, WI 54143-0563.
