Response to protest criticism
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to a recent editorial in which Ms. Doris LaCourt expressed criticisms of my response to a protest that took place outside of a ribbon cutting for the new North Coast Marine Manufacturing Training Center.
When asked my thoughts by a local reporter, I said the protests were unfortunate and have weakened the state’s job climate. I stand behind my comments and believe political unrest and non-stop elections are holding back job creation efforts, not to mention needlessly costing taxpayers money. This has been echoed by constituents and employers who would like to see greater stability and certainty in government.
While everyone has a constitutional right to protest, I disagree with their decision to do so at an event celebrating local efforts to provide training opportunities for thousands of workers. I can’t find a good reason for anyone to protest at the ribbon cutting of a center that will strengthen the local economy and ensure a skilled workforce for years to come.
Ms. LaCourt has criticized me for “whining” about the protests. That simply isn’t the case. I didn’t whine when protesters obstructed the legislative process, made threats, screamed obscenities in my face and poured beer on my head – and I’m not whining now. To that end, the protest outside the NWTC event pales in comparison to the attacks I have been under since making the tough, but right decisions to rein in government spending, balance the budget, and hold the line on taxes.
Technical education funding was also mentioned in the letter. Going into the budget, we recognized that technical colleges are critical to growing our economy. It’s true that facing a $3.6 billion deficit we were forced to reduce their funding. However, through reforms to collective bargaining, tech schools were given the tools needed to offset the funding decrease. Since the budget passed, the sky has not fallen and schools have been able to continue their important mission, preparing students for future employment opportunities.
No issue has been more of a priority to me since being elected than growing jobs and the economy. I’m confident the pro-jobs, pro-growth agenda I have supported is working for the 89th Assembly District, and we have seen encouraging job announcements in recent weeks. For example, Precision Ice Blast relocated 65 jobs from Michigan, KCS International announced an expansion that will create hundreds of jobs, and Marinette Marine continues to thrive.
In closing, political protests and turmoil haven’t created one sustainable job in the state and distract from our efforts to grow the economy. Whining about the past does nothing to position us for the future. Moving forward, I’m hopeful we can come together for the good of the state.

Regarding your “RECALL FEVER” article, I have to agree with your analogy that this group professing to be Concerned Citizens of Brazeau (C-COBs) has to be somewhat ill in the head for even attempting such a frivolous ploy at scamming the electorate and obstructing our local government.
Back in April 2011, the electors overwhelmingly voted the old Board out of office and not without good reasons and the C-COBs have been mad ever since. By the way, the C-COBs are nothing more than some of the same old ad hoc-ers, just repackaged. The only notable difference is they’ve swapped their old mouthpiece for Carl Porior.
At the last Annual Town meeting back in April 2011, the C-COBs ringleader, Mike Luebke, along with a bunch of his cronies, showed up to put forth yet another underhanded attempt to undermine the electorate, which caused considerable discord within the town again.
If the people had not voted the past administration out last April, everyone’s property taxes would be through the roof right now, wasteful spending would be at an all-time high, the repair of our local roads would again be neglected, the town’s emergency services would still have to rely on an outdated Rescue Squad and tinder truck, more damage to our environment would be occurring, and even more of our tax dollars would be wasted by the old chairman with his frivolous lawsuits against the good people of our town.
During the 2011 budget hearing, it was Porior and Rakowski who caused an unwarranted disruption which postponed the budget hearing for two weeks, causing further discord, all because they couldn’t stand the fact that the new Board was cutting spending and thereby lowering everyone’s taxes. I was happy to see that when the electors finally did reconvene, they all voted against Porior and Rakowski’s absurd motion.
Remember back around August of 2010, Luebke started his 10-month rancor against the taxpayers, accusing us of not paying enough in taxes, all because Luebke wanted us to go out and buy him a million dollar plus community center and now Luebke has the gall to complain about $1,800 in out-of-pocket travel expenditures that I incurred while trying to repair and/or improve our town roads.
Let’s talk about that $1,800 for a minute. When I first took office, the previous Board didn’t have any road plans in the works and Chairperson Wendt didn’t have a clue about building roads. Within the first couple of months of being in office, I put together several road projects that were let for bids in 2011. Within the next couple of months I developed road plans to be built in 2012 and started developing road plans for 2013. The Board just awarded two of those road projects last week. Attached to one of those road projects was a $17,000 grant as well.
So, if you take an honest look at that $1,800 number in out-of-pocket expenses and divide it by $17,000 and then divide that amount up over a three-year time period, because that what it represents, it really makes Porior and Luebke look like fools. If you consider all the money that the town has saved because of my efforts, compared to how much has been spent in the past on this same type of work, Porior and Luebke have nothing to gripe about. Why isn’t Luebke complaining about the $1,400 in reimbursable expenditures that Wendt charged to the town and the PA system he went out and bought because he can’t speak loud enough at a meeting, that really help fix a lot of our town roads.
Getting back, on February 22, 2012, Porior shows up at the Town Board meeting and starts spouting off about our fire and rescue services. He continues running off at the mouth with uncalled for criticisms against the people of this town and then starts cutting down and degrading his neighbors with his baseless accusations, distorted facts and outright lies. Porior even goes so far as to try and blame the messes that Rakowski caused in the town on to the new Board. Then after Porior finishes spewing out his pack of lies and his mindless twaddle, he turns around and complains that he had to miss going to church that night.
Porior, Luebke and the C-COBs should all be ashamed of themselves for starting up this trouble in the town and for attempting to place an undue burden on the taxpayers.
Keep in mind, the C-COBs are nothing more than a self-serving special interest group bent on destruction, and their only “concern” is taking as much money as they can get their hands on from the citizens of Brazeau if they ever get the chance. Don’t be fooled by their lies and trickery and don’t ever give them the chance or the whole town will be stricken with “Broke-hitis.”

Recently in these columns numerous adjectives, adverbs and nouns were used, within six paragraphs, to describe Governor Walker. I will list them in order of appearance. Disingenuous, hypocrisy, unabashed deceitfulness, gall, constantly bashing unions, abysmal record of job losses, sleazy modus operandi, sneaking in and out of town like a weasel, divisive agenda, and last but not least failing policies. I don’t ever recall the Governor “constantly bashing unions” but maybe I missed something. Even FDR thought that public employee unions were a bad idea. Unions in the private sector are quite a different thing but unfortunately roles in union leadership are akin to politics which as a pundit once described is made up of two words from Greek origin….poly, meaning many, and tics, which are bloodsucking insects. Most union rank and file members are hardworking and conscientious taxpayers just like most non-union taxpayers. They build, manufacture and transport things and otherwise make a significant positive contribution to society.
Pains were taken to compliment several politicians, all Democrats except for John Nygren, who was first complimented for politeness but immediately accused of whining. All that anyone can conclude is that the Governor has been the one person behind all of the ills that have faced the state and federal government which would be quite an accomplishment since he has only been in office for just over one year. If it is fair to accuse the Governor of being accountable for the failures included in these accusations, then I suggest that we examine the political records of the Democratic politicians who were praised. Let’s use the same criteria applied to the Governor.
Governor Doyle presided over state government for two terms and therefore should be culpable for the fiscal mess that Governor Walker inherited. Senators Kohl and Feingold, having both served multiple terms, should as a result be responsible for the fiscal mess that the Federal Government is now experiencing and that has been going on for decades. Unemployment has skyrocketed during their watch. Neither Senator sponsored any major helpful legislation during their tenures, with the exception of Senator Feingold’s co-sponsorship of McCann-Feingold campaign finance. How’s that working? The others mentioned have likewise all served multiple terms in their respective offices and therefore should share the blame for any state or federal problems that existed during their political office occupation.
Both the State of Wisconsin and the United States have been fiscally irresponsible for a very long time. The State now appears to be on the threshold of changing that but the Federal Government has not yet gotten the message. So what do we do in Wisconsin, we waste millions of taxpayer dollars in an effort to recall a Governor and other politicians who have had the guts to begin to change things in favor of the hardworking taxpayers. This of course includes using millions in union dues to promote the recall effort. How dare the Governor do something to stop the fiscal slide into oblivion!
State and Federal governments do not create jobs other than those within their own bureaucracies. Suggesting and implementing policies that favor those paying the bill for government rather than those who are recipients of government largesse is not popular with many. But if we are to survive with the freedoms and blessings citizens have cherished since our founding, it will take many more politicians to do what is right, not just what is popular. Unfortunately that is not in the DNA of the vast majority of political officeholders or candidates for that matter. Make no mistake, this whole kerfuffle is all about whether public employees should have collective bargaining rights, period.
P.S. Has anyone thanked the Governor and state legislature for a reduction in property taxes or do we think that happened without making hard decisions that may not win a beauty contest?

Are you the Concerned Citizens who proposed a $900,000 Firehouse Squad Building?
Are you the Concerned Citizens who proposed a $550,000 Emergency Services Building?
Are you the Concerned Citizens who tried to come through the back door with a resolution to build an Emergency Services Building at the Annual Town Meeting?
Are you the same Concerned Citizens who refused to give their names at the Voter Forum before the last election?
Even though I don’t know your names, I am here to tell you – you lost.
To have a recall for a two-year term of office is a waste of time and money absent a serious or legal complaint against the supervisors.
The reasons given on the Statement of Intent to Circulate Recall Petition were not only not factual, they were opinions and misrepresentations of the facts.
Two elections in a six-month period because of poor losers is ridiculous.
Be sure to be the first to sign the Recall Petitions so that we know who you are.

In a state and country torn apart by political partisanship, we need good news that draws us back together. Congratulations to the Coleman wrestlers for winning the State Championship and the Peshtigo Times for the good job of reporting it. We can celebrate being a small town with a common heritage as we acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Kevin Casper and his State Champion Cougars.
In my college days, I would often walk by a campus statue of the “Alma Mater” that had the inscription “to thy happy children of the future, those of the past send greeting.” As one of the early State Champions of the Jim Douglas era I would like to extend my greetings from the past champions to those of the present. We have handed you the baton and you have run the race well.

Letter to the Editor:
I am writing this letter to express my thanks to Alderperson Mary Lock and Jim Wortner of Road King Excavating for their assistance during the snow storm last Wednesday. When snowstorms hit our area to the degree we received last week, all of us like to get our streets and driveways cleared as soon as possible. This is especially true when you are operating health care facilities. At Rennes Health and Rehab East and West we provide care to over 200 individuals, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When bad weather strikes it is imperative that our roads are cleared timely to provide access for emergency vehicles, our employees, supplies, and potential visitors.
As of late afternoon last Wednesday, Jopek Road, the only access road to the Rennes East facility, had not been plowed. Barb Walters, administrator at East, and I placed several phone calls trying to find out why Jopek had not been plowed and when we could expect it to be plowed. The answer we received was that the plow truck drivers were off the road until 11 p.m. due to the need to be taken off plowing duties as they had reached the maximum allowable hours to plow. An understandable and justified reason but it did not resolve our immediate problem. I then contacted Mary Lock for assistance, and she understood the importance and urgency of our situation. To resolve our problem, Barb Walters contacted Mr. Wortner, who was extremely responsive and took care of Jopek Road within an hour of the call.
Thanks again Mary and Jim for your responsiveness to our situation!

Disingenuous Hypocrisy? That’s what Doris LaCourt labeled Scott Walker’s recent visit. My question is - how can hypocrisy be disingenuous?
Anyway, she questions, or should I quote, “He (Walker) blithely cut more than $70 million from technical colleges.” Then she asks the question, “How did that cut help the training center in Marinette?” I guess I am confused. Wasn’t Gov. Walker in town for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the NEW training center in Marinette? I guess the answer is pretty obvious - it didn’t hurt at all. As a matter of fact, one could conclude that it helped, otherwise Gov. Walker wouldn’t have been in Marinette for the opening of the NEW Technical Training Center located in Marinette.
She rambles on with “Walker has been constantly bashing unions.” I would like to ask where has Scott Walker “bashed” a union? Why would Gov. Walker “Continually Bash Unions” when almost 39.6% of all union members voted for Gov. Walker? That’s a direct quote from Democrat Leader Mahlon Mitchell. (You can see his video on the Marinette County Democrat web site). All Gov. Walker did was provide protection for the taxpayer by asking PUBLIC sector employees to pay 5% & 12.5% into their health care and pension plans. Really, Doris, is that too much to ask? Consider the message from President Obama - “We all need to spread the wealth.”
Many in the private sector pay a heck of a lot more toward their health care premiums and most don’t have employer provided pension plans. Most private sector employees have 401K programs and they are lucky to have a 1% - 2% match unlike the public unions where 100% of it is paid for by the taxpayer.
I had to pick myself up off the floor when she gave every Democrat that ever lived credit for the LCS contract coming to Marinette when in fact the official announcement came December 30, 2010 - many weeks after Scott Walker, Reid Ribble, Ron Johnson all won their elections.
Now people are going to say “You shouldn’t be so out spoken,” “You should keep your opinion to yourself.” My question is Why? Why is it okay for people to run around collecting recall signatures and display signs on their vehicles regarding recalls but those of us who support Gov. Walker need to remain silent? I would suggest this to Walker supporters - Speak up! Don’t be afraid to show your support. Find the courage to stand strong regardless if you own the business or you are an employee. Be proud of your affiliation with Gov. Walker and remember the quote by Burke: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Letter to Editor:
Carl Porior and I recently submitted Statements of Intent to Submit Recall Petitions for recalling Town of Brazeau Town Supervisors Darrell Enix and James Hanna. The petitions are being circulated due to mismanagement of the Town of Brazeau’s affairs, unethical behavior and suppressing public involvement in the political process.
Mr. Enix and Mr. Hanna have spent more than double the town’s budget for road construction in 2011 including questionable pet projects. They have waged a battle with the town’s citizens and Emergency Services volunteers by passing rules to severely limit public input into town meetings and putting roadblock after roadblock in front of the Emergency Services groups. Their meeting rules include prohibiting any public comment unless the person pre-registers to talk and then only during a specially designated agenda item. Also, citizens are not allowed to make comments that could be viewed as negative regarding the performance of a Board member. Board meetings prior to this group of Supervisors were open discussions of issues affecting citizens of Brazeau Township. Citizen input was a valuable part of the process. Before being elected Mr. Enix used the opportunity of Board Meetings to challenge and question every action of the prior board. And despite this opportunity he was given by earlier Boards, one of the first actions of Mr. Enix and Mr. Hanna was to drastically limit public input and involvement.
On the ethics front, Mr. Enix has had questionable expenses including paying himself for duties normally considered part of the Supervisor responsibilities and very high mileage expenses. Mr. Enix votes to approve his own expenses and his wife’s expenses as Town Treasurer and Mr. Hanna supports this unethical behavior. And under their meeting rules, no one from the public is allowed to question their behavior that violates state statutes regarding ethical standards for public officials.
This recall has nothing to do with building a new Emergency Services building. After the current Board’s spending spree during 2011 we have limited funds available. A new building will eventually be needed. Such a step should probably not be considered until a new board has a couple of years to restore financial stability to the township. Mr. Enix and Mr. Hanna have spent more than $250,000 beyond budget levels on road projects in 2011. They funded this by raiding a building fund set up by the prior Board. Any financial reserves the town had were spent in 2011. Any capacity to undertake a large project is very limited.
I know Mr. Enix will begin to spread false stories regarding reasons for this recall effort. Do NOT BELIEVE THEM. He and Mr. Hanna have created an environment in Brazeau Township that tries to pit people against each other. Morale and community pride are at an all-time low. This can only be fixed by electing some new Supervisors that have the community’s interests as a priority and see their role as community service not an opportunity to pursue their own interests.

What an unbelievable season. We are so lucky to have a community of fans that support their team the way you do. I just want to say thank you to so many for everything you do to help contribute to the success of the Coleman wrestling program. Thank you to the police, fire and rescue for parading us through town and back to school.
Thank you to our fans, you are the absolute best. We were the smallest school down there yet have the most fans. All the alumni that showed up was incredible. Thank you to the pep band for being there and playing. It sure adds to the excitement. As well as the students who came down to cheer on their classmates. Molly Graetz sang the National Anthem before the finals and it was outstanding.
Cheerleaders, thank you for all the signs, banners, etc. that you do for the wrestlers. Thank you to all the businesses that put up signs and banners on your message boards. Thank you to the Coleman Booster Club and Coleman Wrestling Club for your support.
Thank you to all the coaches and alumni that help out at all levels; we wouldn’t be what we are without you. Parents, thank you for giving us the opportunity to coach your sons. You’ve done a great job because they are incredible young men.
I’d like to thank Dr. Thill for taking time and fitting us in his busy schedule to get our wrestlers back on the mat. Lastly, I want to thank my wife and family for all their support and understanding because it is a very long season. Hopefully I didn’t miss anyone and thanks again to everyone because this will be a season that will never be forgotten.

Dear Editor:
You don’t have to turn your television set on to hear the latest news about what some hate group is doing to destroy this country, the residents of Brazeau have one such group right in their backyard. A handful of them show up at just about every Town Board meeting and purposely try to disrupt and interfere with the proceedings any way they can.
At the moment, they are using Carl Porior to launch their personal attacks and cause havoc at our Town Board meetings. At the February Town Board meeting, Porior stood up and started griping about our town and started spreading false rumors about the people living in our town. He even went so far as to bear false witness against his own neighbors and friends. After he finished, Porior complained that he had to miss church that night. I guess Porior felt that it was more important to deliver his hate speech that night than it was to attend his church service.
One of Porior’s complaints that night, as he puts it, “enacted a set of rules to suppress citizen input.” I asked Porior what he didn’t like about the set of rules. Porior’s response was, “I don’t know anything about no rules, I haven’t seen them.” Then, can anyone tell me what is he complaining about?
As for suppressing citizen input, it’s obvious that Porior knows very little about Wisconsin Open Meeting laws. Town Board meetings are meetings of the Town Board. Town meetings are meetings of the Town. Perhaps someone can explain the difference to Porior, he seems to be confused.
Another one of Porior’s complaints was “poor communication with citizens.” It has been less than two months now since Porior and Luebke came over to my house. Porior said he had a few issues he wanted to discuss about the Town. We sat down and talked for about two hours. I certainly would not consider speaking with someone for a couple of hours to be “poor communication with citizens.”
During our visit Porior stated that we don’t need to spend any money on our roads. Porior claimed that Parkway Road didn’t need to be paved and that it was a waste of money.
The section of Parkway Road that was paved is one of the heaviest traveled roads in our town. The last time this section was paved was over 37 years ago. I’m sure glad Porior is not in charge of overlooking our roads, because we all would be driving on dirt roads.
Porior and Luebke are running around griping that we over spent on this and we over spent on that, and the new Board spent too much money fixing roads in 2011. All Porior and Luebke have to do is look back to 2007. Actual expenditures for Public Works that year was $716,544. If Porior and Luebke were not griping back then, they certainly do not have cause to be griping now.
The thing that neither Porior nor Luebke can explain is if all this over spending occurred in the town, then how is it that everyone’s taxes dropped this year?
As long as I am in office, I’m going to continue to work to lower taxes, improve our roads, cut wasteful spending and support our Emergency Services, as I promised to the people that elected me into office.
