Maroon Shock Kingsford In Tourney Opener 62-43 After suffering through a frustrating regular season, the Menominee Maroons (9-12) erased most of those memories with a stunning 62-43 road upset of GNC champion Kingsford (17-4) Monday night.
Twice during the season Menominee lost to Kingsford by double digits 61-49 and 55-45. That all changed in the Michigan tourney opener as the Maroons used an 18-5 fourth quarter surge to claim the upset win.
This was our biggest win of the year...beating Marinette and Peshtigo was nice, but this was better. We played well the whole game. I really thought we had a chance to win, but certainly not by that much, Maroon coach Pete Pericolosi said. I think Kingsford overlooked us a bit and got caught looking ahead.
The road victory, only the second in a dozen games this year, sends the Maroons into the MHSAA Class B district semifinals Wednesday at Gladstone. If Menominee would prevail in that clash, they would host the district finals on Friday at 6pm against the Sault Ste. Marie and Escanaba victor.
We beat Gladstone twice this year and had a tough game up there earlier. We know anything can happen in the tournament and will remind our players not to look ahead. It would be nice to play at home Friday, Pericolosi added.
Menominee Pulls Off
Tourney Upset 62-43
Coming in as a big underdog, the Maroons used a variety of defenses and some consistent play to stun heavily favored Kingsford 62-43.
Menominee doubled up the host Flivvers 14-7 at the first break before settling for a 25-20 halftime lead. Both offenses came to life in period three with the Maroons running off a 19-18 edge to take a 44-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
And what a quarter it was. Menominee hit on 7 straight shots and opened the frame on a 9-0 run to help wrap up the big win. While the Maroons were red hot, Kingsford shot 1-13 in the period and came out on the short end of an 18-5 scoring surge.
Our defense was good throughout the game...began with a triangle and two on Jeff Gregory and Caleb Harrington and switched to a 3-2 later. In their game against Stephenson, Kingsford had trouble with the 3-2 so we were going to use it until they scored. Kingsford didnt score until the final minute and we had a nice lead by then, Pericolosi explained.
Bryan Hines paced Menominee with 19 points, Jared Rivard 17 points and 9 rebounds while sophomore point guard Devon Harris added 8 points, 7 assists and just one turnover.
The last time we played Kingsford, we got only 13 rebounds. Last night we outrebounded them 30-24 and were able to keep our big guys inside on defense and let the wings chase. It was a nice overall effort by our kids, Pericolosi added.
Menominee finished with a 22-50 shooting mark (44%), including 3-10 on threes.
Jake Menard lead Kingsford with 9 points, Harrington added 8 while the GNC player of the year, Gregory, was held to just 2 points.
Maroons Tripped
By Up Stephenson
Falling behind 33-25 at intermission, the Maroons never recovered in suffering a 54-47 loss in the final game of the regular season Friday.
Menominee did manage to close within 51-47 with 90 seconds left before the Eagles tallied the final 3 points of the game.
We were not sharp at all. The kids were off from school for 4 days because of the weather and we couldnt practice for two, so I knew it wasnt going to be pretty. This group needs to practice to get better and it showed against Stephenson, Pericolosi commented.
Hines paced Menominee with 13 points, Rivard connected for a trio of three point shots and 12 points while Bobby Olsen chipped in with 8 points and 9 rebounds.
Travis Wangerin was the top gun for Stephenson with 21 points and 14 rebounds, Kane Rasner hit for 12 and Jacob Brock 9 points.
With Wangerin having his way on the boards, Stephenson claimed a 15-11 first quarter lead. Wangerin only netted 5 points in the opening frame, but came up with numerous rebounds and steals to pose a huge threat inside.
The Maroons did manage an early 4-1 lead (6:14) as Rivard and Hines drilled jumpers before the Eagles began to soar. Brock canned a 5-footer to knot the score at 9-9 (2:59) before Hines put the Maroons back on top with a bucket to go up 11-9. Baskets by Wangerin and Brock along with two free throws from Austin Grinsteiner gave Stephenson the 15-11 spread.
Stephenson kept on controlling the inside in period two and used an 18-14 surge to pry open a 33-25 halftime lead. Wangerin worked his way for a pair of hoops while Kyle Raboin drilled a trey for a 24-15 cushion (4:54).
Free throws by Olsen, Devon Harris and Rivard along with baskets by Olsen and a three by Rivard got the Maroons within 31-23 at the 1:20 mark. Rasner answered with a jumper for Stephenson and that 8 point halftime cushion.
Both teams tallied 13 points in the third frame as Stephenson built up a 38-25 lead before Menominee closed the gap. Over the final 8 minutes, Menominee ran off a 9-8 surge to trail at the final buzzer 54-47. A 3-point play by Brock put Stephenson up 51-47 before Wangerin sealed the win with a trio of free throws.
Menominee made 18 of 50 shots (36%), including just 5-24 on threes. Stephenson added 18-36 shooting (50%).
