Tony Krysiak Renamed Manager Of Airport

After interviewing four candidates Monday morning, March 19, Twin County Airport Commission agreed to return former Airport Manager Tony Krysiak of Menominee to his old position. He will manage the airport as a 20-hour per week part time employee, with two linemen also continuing on the job. Salary was set at $20 per hour.

In a report to Marinette County’s Economic Development Committee Monday afternoon, Commissioner Nick Lakari, who is a County Board Supervisor and Economic Development Committee member, said selection of the new “recycled” airport manager had been completed by the Commission just 45 minutes earlier in Menominee. In public action the commission offered Krysiak the position and he accepted, ending background check and drug testing procedures. He could start work as early as Monday, March 26.

Lakari said the Commission had finalized the job description at their meeting in February, and on Friday, March 16, moved along some by-law revisions primarily related to the new job description. They also agreed the Personnel Committee will have some new responsibilities, including performance appraisals for the new manager and the two linemen.

He said in the past there were basically no work histories maintained for airport employees. For example, there was no history for Krysiak recounting his prior time as manager.

“He’s a good guy,” Nancy Douglas, head of the Menominee County Economic Development Corporation, said of Krysiak. She commented that he was airport manager many years ago. “It’s nice he’s coming back. He’s very knowledgeable about airport stuff,” she declared.

The other three candidates interviewed were Kristopher S. Mohr of Menominee, Thomas E. Walk of Marinette and Mark McDonald of Powers, Mich.

Douglas reported briefly that the task force studying economic development opportunities for the airport is making progress, but no report can be given at this time. Eventually the result of the study is expected to include prospects who may be attracted to locate businesses at or near the airport.

It was the last meeting for Committee Chair George Bousley, whose term as a County Board Supervisor and County Board Chair ends with the elections on April 3. He is not a candidate for reelection. He will continue in his position as Mayor of Niagara.

Although County Board’s bi-annual reorganization is not to be held until Tuesday, April 17, Bousley said he will not be chairing the Economic Development Committee’s April 10 meeting since he technically will have been replaced as a supervisor. He suggested the meeting should be conducted by Vice Chair Ken Casper, and the committee agreed.

Bousley thanked everyone for their cooperation over the years, and mentioned that Casper had been with him since his term on County Board began. He said there have been many beneficial changes, and said he was fortunate that Douglas has begun attending the Marinette County Economic Development meetings, since “this really is a regional economy.”

“I’ve been here 30 plus years, and this is the first time I’ve felt positive about being able to exchange ideas and accomplish things with Marinette County,” Douglas declared, adding that happened almost entirely because of George Bousley, who invited her to the Marinette County meetings and made her feel welcome. “That doesn’t happen at all levels,” she added.

“We don’t always see the things George has done,” Casper declared. “He’s got a lot of finger prints all over the county. Whenever cities, villages or towns needed help, he knew who to talk to and how to get things done.”

Supervisor Shirley Kaufman praised Bousley for his fairness and honesty. “You can disagree,” she told Bousley, “but you do it respectfully, and you listen to the other person’s point of view. That’s a really big thing in today’s society.”

Marinette/Menominee Area Chamber of Commerce Director Mary Johns reported on five major events happening during the week, which she described as the busiest yet in the five years since she became chamber director.
