Suring Junior Is Top Scorer In Circuit; Peshtigo Lands 2 Starters In Barrette And Berth

For the third straight year and 9th time since 2001, the most valuable boys basketball player in the M-O Conference wears the colors of the Suring Eagles.

This year it was high scoring junior forward Jay Tienor, who was the leading point producer in the 9-team circuit.

Tienor peppered opposing defenses for 16 points and 8 rebounds per game in the M-O and owned a 17.5 average and 8.5 rebounds overall.

Sparked by Tienor’s offensive talents, Suring put together a superb 14-2 campaign, finishing second behind league champion Peshtigo (16-0).

“Jay had a good year and is a hard worker that will get even better next year. A lot of his improvement from last year to this season, came above the shoulders. He is a shy kid with a lot of talent and at 6’2 wanted to be the go to guy by the end of the year. We should be a better team next season with all five starters back,” Suring coach Gary Regal said.

The post-season honor allows Tienor to join a select group of talented MVP Suring cagers that started with Jeff Jossie in 1989, Donnie Leisner (2001), Nate Regal (2002), Aaron Regal (2003 and 2004), Josh Regal (2006 and 2008) and Chad Strehlow for the past two seasons.

“We’ve been lucky at Suring and had a lot of good players compete for us. All of them have been good players that worked hard and showed plenty of leadership,” coach Regal added.

Joining Tienor on the first team were a pair of performers for conference champion Peshtigo. Sporting that superb unbeaten readout, Peshtigo saw senior point guard Brandon Barrette and sophomore forward Jordan Berth (6’3) make their way onto the elite squad.

The lone senior on the first team, Barrette was selected as the top defender in the conference for the third straight year.

“Brandon is a three-time defensive player of the year and a good reason why we were so successful on defense. His overall record as the starting point guard for 3 years is 54-17. He is an athlete in every sense of the word,” Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said.

Probably the most versatile Bulldog, Berth’s numbers aren’t flashy, but he was by far their best all around player.

Be it offense or defense, Berth did what was asked of him. Guard the opponent’s best player, rebound or take over the scoring load, the sophomore excelled.

“Jordan’s individual stats were not that impressive, but for the team he was first or second in six different categories.....points, rebounds, free throws, percentage, steals and assists. We would usually put Jordan on one of the opponent’s top scorers....if he was big, Jordan would get him or smaller, then Brandon would get the task. Jordan was smart enough to guard big or small,” Spaulding added.

Rounding out the starting team were Wausaukee junior guard Ryan Nystrom, tied for second in scoring at 13.1 points per game and Crivitz sophomore Ben Fischer (6’2).

Despite going through a winless season, the second team was lead by Lena senior ace Craig Huberty, who netted 210 points and shared the runner-up scoring spot.

Other seniors on the second team were Eric Nasgovitz of Coleman (6’2) and Zak Peterson from Gillett along with Suring floor general Blake Strehlow (junior) and Peshtigo long range bombing sophomore Zack Neumann.

Honorable mention votes went to Austin Carter, Wausaukee; Cody Christensen and Dan Sweda of Suring; Scott Duffield, Peshtigo; Justin Heimke, Lena; Dakota Jeffords and Jordan Zawada of Niagara; Evan Kueber, Crivitz; Landon Maccoux and Kiefer Powers, STAA and Drew Patenaude, Gillett.
