Coleman And Wausaukee Roll To Lopsided Wins

M-O Powers Own 4 Victories In Early Season

The expected powers of the M-O Conference baseball race, Coleman and Wausaukee, chalked up their fourth wins of the preseason in dominating fashion.

Defending champion Coleman improved to 4-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Crandon Thursday 12-2 and 7-2.

Coming off a 21-2 campaign and a state tournament appearance, Coleman should have another successful season on the baseball diamond.

Continuing their dominance of Northern Lakes Conference foes, the Wausaukee Rangers pushed their readout to 4-0 by slaughtering White Lake 31-1 Thursday and Elcho 19-zip Monday.

Both M-O squads will host teams from the Lakes circuit Friday as Three Lakes heads to Coleman for a 2:30pm doubleheader while Phelps travels to Wausaukee.

The 10-game conference season begins on Tuesday, April 17 when Coleman heads to Peshtigo, Wausaukee entertains Gillett and Lena-STAA travels to Crivitz.

Coleman Cleans Up

On Crandon Twice

Punching out 21 hits, Coleman swept a doubleheader from visiting Crandon 12-2 and 7-2.

In the opener, coach Kent Casper’s crew tallied 12 hits and rode the 10-strikeout performance of hard throwing junior righthander Derek Marquardt.

Coleman, which saw the top 5 batters in the order collect 11 hits, scored 3 runs in the first inning then added 3 in the fourth and 5 in the fifth to win via the 10-run rule.

Mason Mergener paced the Cougars with 3 hits, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI while brother Mike added 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI. Also socking out two hits for Coleman were Jake Engels, Mitch Champagne and Trevor Bushmaker.

Coleman struck for 3 runs in the first inning as Engels beat out an infield single, Champagne tripled to right, Mike Mergener hit a RBI grounder, while Mason Mergener and Bushmaker followed with run scoring doubles.

Mason Mergener socked a leadoff double in the third and scored on a ground out. In the fourth, Champagne and Mike Mergener singled while Bushmaker added a sac fly.

Coleman sent 8 batters to the plate in the fifth scoring 5 runs on 5 hits. Lucas Markiewicz singled, while Engels, Mike and Mason Mergener doubled. Bushmaker ended the game with a RBI single to center.

Marquardt dominated the Crandon attack walking 2 while giving up just 4 hits.

In game two, Coleman gave the ball to Engels as the senior righthander yielded two hits over 4 innings with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Six errors by the Cougar defense allowed Crandon to stay within striking distance before scoring 4 times in the fourth inning to pull away.

Relief pitcher Markiewicz walked two during his 3-inning mound stint.

Mike Mergener, Bushmaker (3 RBI) and Markiewicz (2 RBI) drilled 2 hits each in the nightcap.

Four fielding miscues in the opening frame enabled Crandon to grab a 1-0 lead. The edge didn’t last long as Coleman answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the frame on 3 hits.

Engels opened the inning with a single, but was gunned down at second base on a steal attempt. With two outs, Mike Mergener singled and brother Mason walked. A wild pitch and single by Markiewicz put Coleman ahead for good 2-1.

Mason Mergener reached on an error and scored on a ground out by Markiewicz for a 3-1 spread in the third inning.

The Cougars combined 3 errors with 4 hits in the fourth to push the upper hand to 7-2. Marquardt opened with an infield single and Jackson Margis got aboard on a walk. Engels walked, while Mike Mergener, Bushmaker and Markiewicz lashed singles.

Wausaukee Whips

Laona-Wabeno

Talk about a rout!

Unleashing a 20 hit attack, the Rangers rolled past host Laona-Wabeno Thursday 31-1.

That is no misprint...a 30 run victory.

Wausaukee scored 10 runs in the first inning, 8 in the second, 7 in the third, one in the fourth before tacking on 5 more runs in the fifth.

Ranger boss Bill Wickman watched his troops bat around in four of the five innings played, including sending 14 batters to the plate in the opening frame. The Rangers took advantage of numerous errors and walks to score 18 unearned runs.

“I was very pleased with the way our kids played in all aspects of the game. Out of our 20 hits, 15 were legitimate hard hits and our defense was solid. Cole Lewandowski was in total control on the mound giving up just one hit and striking out 10,” Wickman said.

Leading the hit-happy Rangers was leadoff swinger Brett Edlbeck with 5 hits in 6 trips to the plate, 4 runs scored and 6 RBI. Austin Carter added 3 hits and 4 RBI, Lewandowski 2 hits, 6 runs scored and 4 RBI, while Beau DeLaet (4 runs), Aaron Schlies and Dillon Meyer punched out two safeties each.

The Rangers cracked one triple (Lewandowski) to go along with doubles off the bats of Edlbeck, Carter, Brennan Gabriel and Meyers (two).

Lewandowski needed just 72 pitches to complete the 5 inning win and saw a fourth inning RBI double by Ty Saunders ruin his no-hit bid.

Crivitz Clipped

By Norway 8-7

In an extra inning affair, Crivitz saw visiting Norway claim an 8-7 win Thursday on a bases loaded, two-out walk.

Crivitz battled back from a 3-0 first inning deficit and trailed 7-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th frame.

That’s when coach Jeff Dorschner’s troops rallied for 4 runs on just one hit to force extra innings. Walks to Jed Nelson, Cody Wolf, Parker DeLosSantos and AJ Garcia got the Wolverines within 7-4.

With the bases loaded, clean-up swinger Tyler Wieting took care of the final three runs with a three-run triple.

After a scoreless 8th inning, Norway saw Austin Grayvold draw a bases loaded walk to send Dan Vivio home with the winning run.

Wolf started for Crivitz giving up 7 runs on 7 hits before being relieved by Garcia.

John Grayvold worked 6 1/3 innings for Norway allowing 2 hits, no earned runs while fanning 8. Vivio collected the mound win in relief with 2 2/3 innings of no runs, one hit and 6 strikeouts.

DeLaet Dominates As

Wausaukee Cruises 19-0

Sparked by a no-hit pitching performance from sophomore Beau DeLaet, the Rangers had no trouble disposing of Elcho 19-0.

The Ranger righthander avoided the Hornets sting by setting down 10 batters on strikes and issuing no walks during a 5-inning, 54 pitch effort.

“Beau was in control the whole game...got ahead of the hitters and was around the plate. Our defense came up with some good plays and the batters made solid contact,” Wickman said.

There was no doubt DeLaet was in control. He lost a bid for a perfect game in the fifth inning on fielding errors by third baseman Brennen Gabriel and first sacker Austin Carter.

While DeLaet did his thing on the mound, the Wausaukee offense unleashed 13 hits to go along with 6 walks and 5 errors.

DeLaet aided his own cause with 2 hits and 2 runs scored, Eddy Self slapped out a pair of singles and scored twice while Zach Struve went 2-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.

The Rangers sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 9 runs on 6 hits. Cole Lewandowski doubled down the leftfield line to drive in two runs while Struve, Brett Edlbeck and DeLaet added run scoring singles.

Wausaukee added 5 more runs on 3 hits in the second frame, highlighted by a booming two-run double to left center off the bat of designated hitter Dillon Meyers.

Two errors along with a wild pitch and run scoring ground out by Meyers pushed the upper hand to 16-0 in the third inning.

The final 3 Ranger runs came in the fourth as DeLaet, Carter, Jesse Parr and Struve punched out singles.

Titans Earn Split

With Stephenson

The Lena-STAA Titans came up with a doubleheader split Monday afternoon beating Stephenson 4-2 in the opener before falling 19-3 in game two in a pair of 5-inning games.

A strong pitching performance from Landen Maccoux sparked the Titans as the righthander fanned 8 and walked 3 during his mound stint.

Maccoux doubled and scored following a RBI bunt by Billy Howe and two-run single from Jacob Jones in the second inning for a 3-1 lead.

In the third inning, Jake Manning walked and later scored on a single by Kiefer Powers and couple of stolen bases.

Eddie Beccera was tagged with the loss allowing 3 hits while fanning 7 and walking one.

Stephenson pushed across 6 runs in the first, third and fourth frames to claim a 19-3 second game win. The Eagles took advantage of some shoddy fielding by the Titans to score 14 unearned runs.

Rick Chaney earned the mound win yielding 2 hits...singles by Maccoux and Jameson Bardowski.

Powers started for the Titans with relief help from Bardowski as the duo gave up 12 hits.

Bulldogs Burned

By Blue Devils 8-1

Collecting just 4 hits, coach Pat Robbins saw his Bulldogs fall to 0-5 on the season with an 8-1 home loss to Oconto. Peshtigo knotted the non-league setback at 1-1 in the second frame before Oconto scored 4 unearned runs in the third, 2 in the fifth and one in the seventh to pull away.

With their bats as cold as the temperatures, the Bulldogs lone run came on one swing of Derek Koronkiewicz’s bat as the junior belted a leadoff homer in the second frame.

The Blue Devils (2-2) took advantage of a pair of Peshtigo errors to score Teague Camps in the second inning then started to pull away with a 4 run outburst in the third.

Five fielding miscues by the Bulldogs fueled the rally and scored the unearned runs for a 5-1 spread. Trent Mehlberg blasted a RBI double while Camps chipped in with a single.

In the fifth inning, Jacob Westphal got things started with a double and made his way around the sacks on a walk to Austin Young and single off the bat of Aaron Duncan.

Oconto’s final tally came in the seventh when Duncan, Connor Moe and Tanner Pillsbury all singled.

Zack Neumann, the first of three Peshtigo pitchers, was tagged with the loss giving up 5 runs on 3 hits over 4 innings. Matt Borkovec (2 innings) and Jordan Berth (one) provided relief help.

Blake Campshure earned the mound win scattering 3 hits over 5 innings before Austin Young got the call for the final two frames.

Crivitz Holds Off

Sevastopol 9-5

Exploding for 9 runs in the opening two innings, Crivitz held on to turn back visiting Sevastopol 9-5.

The Wolverines were paced by three hits from Jake Sawinski and a pair from Spencer Schwartz to key a 9 hit attack.

In the first inning uprising, Crivitz combined 3 walks with singles by Sawinski (2 RBI), Schwartz (1 RBI) and Jed Nelson to tally 5 runs.

Four more Wolverines made their way home in the second frame on singles by winning pitcher AJ Garcia, Tyler Wieting, Schwartz and Colton Lange.

In notching his first career mound win, the southpaw Garcia kept Sevastopol off the scoreboard until the 7th inning allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. Garcia scattered 9 hits in his complete game effort with 4 strikeouts and one walk.

The losing pitcher was Noel Farber.
