Offense Struggles As Marines Drop Bay Outings

Score One Run In Two Games

With their offense in an early season slump, the Marinette Marines (2-4, 0-2) managed just one run in suffering a pair of Bay Conference setbacks.

Marinette wasted a brilliant pitching performance by Austin Belonga Thursday in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Shawano. Marinette punched out two hits and lost the game in the 7th inning when Belonga saw a no-hit bid get ruined by a two-run homer.

The outcome was the same Tuesday as Marinette collected 6 hits in dropping a 4-0 home clash to league leading Luxemburg-Casco (5-0, 2-0).

The Marines will try to end a 4-game skid with a Bay clash at Oconto Falls Thursday, non-league home game with Oconto Friday before traveling to pre-season favorite Hortonville Tuesday.

Marines Manage Two

Hits In 2-1 Heartbreaker

It was a frustrating opener to the Bay Conference season Thursday as the Marines came up on the short end of a 2-1 loss. Marinette pitcher Austin Belonga took a no-hitter into the 7th inning only to lose it and the game when Lukas Postl blasted a two-run homer.

“It was a well pitched game by both pitchers. Austin Belonga pitched outstanding for Marinette. Going into the 7th inning he had a no-hitter but made one mistake pitch and it cost him the ball game,” Francour said. “We struggled against the slow curveball all day and never were able to keep our weight back at the plate. Once the bats come alive, we will be okay.”

Belonga struck out 3 batters and did not walk any while giving up an unearned run.

Meanwhile Shawano’s Hunter Hoffman was just as effective setting down 7 Marines on strikes and issuing no free passes.

The league opener, which only took 75 minutes to play, saw Marinette push across their lone run in the bottom of the first frame. With one out, Charlie Klumb reached on a two base error then made his way home when Belonga’s grounder was muffed.

Marinette almost added to their lead in the fourth when Joey Brosig and Belonga lashed back to back singles. After Luke Kelly moved both runners up a base with a bunt, Hoffman escaped further trouble with strikeouts of Aaron Pettit and Kyle Johnson.

Shawano threatened in the fifth when Hoffman got aboard on an error and stood at third base following a bunt and a wild pitch. He never made it the final 90 feet as Belonga coaxed the next two batters into a fly ball and grounder.

Looking to add to the lead in the 6th, Klumb reached on an error, stole second before moving to third on a ground out by Belonga. He was also stranded when Kelly popped up to end the inning.

Taking that 1-0 lead into the 7th, Marinette ran into trouble as Kelly couldn't handle a low throw from third sacker Jake McMahon allowing Brandon Laabs to reach. That brought up Postl and you know what happened. After two failed bunt attempts, Postl deposited a fastball over the leftfield fence for the game winning blow.

“Postl tomahawked a 1-2 fastball over the left field fence. It was probably the only bad pitch Belonga threw all night,” Francour added. “This was a game we should have won, but didn’t hit the ball at all.”

Key Hit Eludes Marines

In 4-Zip Bay Setback

Failing to get the key hit, the Marines dropped a 4-0 league outing to Luxemburg-Casco Tuesday. Marinette couldn’t take advantage of 8 walks issued by winning pitcher Caleb Williams, who scattered 6 hits in the route going performance.

Marinette threatened in just about every inning, but couldn’t get the goose-egg off the scoreboard, stranding 14 runners on the base paths. The Marines put two runners on base in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings only to be denied.

While Williams dodged trouble throughout, Marinette starting pitcher Luke Kelly saw one bad inning ruin his mound performance.

Getting tagged with the loss, Kelly allowed 4 runs (all earned) on 5 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts over 5 innings. A 3-run third inning was Kelly’s downfall as the Spartans combined two walks with one hit and a trio of wild pitches.

The Marinette attack saw Max Hipke and Aaron Pettit rip doubles while singles came off the bats of Klumb, Brosig, Nate Kallestad and Derek Klegin.

With the game scoreless heading into the third, Kelly walked Joey Paider who moved to second on a bunt and scored on a single by Mitch Berceau. Another walk to Lucas Tlachac followed by three wild pitches pushed two more runs home.

L-C upped the lead to 4-0 in the fifth on two-out singles by Tlachac, Berceau and Williams.
