Defending Champ Coleman Tames Bulldogs 6-1; Wausaukee Tops Gillett 4-2 On DeLaet's Gem

A trio of Coleman pitchers allowed just two hits in leading the defending champions to a 6-1 conference opening win at Peshtigo Tuesday. Now 7-1 on the season, the talented Cougars made the most of 8 hits to turn back the Bulldogs (0-7).

Elsewhere in M-O Conference action, Wausaukee (5-0) rode a complete game 4-hitter from sophomore Beau DeLaet to beat an improved Gillett team 4-2. The final league clash saw host Crivitz clobber Lena-STAA 14-4.

Coleman Collects

6-1 Opening Victory


Getting a tough game from rival Peshtigo, the Cougars scored three times in the sixth inning to claim the 6-1 win.

Coach Kent Casper’s crew tallied solo runs in the first, third and fifth frames and took a 6-0 spread into the bottom of the sixth before Peshtigo finally scored. Mitch Champagne tallied 3 of the six Coleman runs.

In the opening inning, Champagne walked, stole second and scored on a single by Mason Mergener. Champagne was back at it in the third getting aboard on an error and racing home on Mike Mergener’s RBI double. Coleman upped the lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Champagne reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on a hit by Mason Mergener.

Looking to pad the lead, Coleman tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Winning pitcher Derek Marquardt tripled to start the inning then made his way home as Lucas Markiewicz laced a RBI single. Jackson Margis singled with Markiewicz scoring on a wild pitch. Margis headed home on a groundout by Champagne.

Tom Quigley tallied Peshtigo’s only run in the sixth after reaching on a walk.

Marquardt fanned 6 and allowed 2 hits over 4 innings before giving way to Trevor Bushmaker and Mason Mergener.

Zach Neumann was tagged with the loss with relief help from Jordan Berth and Matt Borkovec.

DeLaet Dominates In

4-2 Wausaukee Win


Ranger righthander Beau DeLaet needed 109 pitches to toss a complete game 4-hitter in a 4-2 win over Gillett. DeLaet used 5 strikeouts to stay escape jams and helped his own cause with a a pair of RBI doubles and two runs scored.

Wausaukee registered 10 hits off losing hurler Derek Zahn, including 3 singles from number nine swinger Dillon Meyers and two each from DeLaet, Austin Carter and Joe Jaworski.

Gillett did manage to go up 1-0 in the third frame as Brad Mueller opened the game with a double and scored on a groundout by Zahn.

Wausaukee got even in its half of the first inning when DeLaet doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on sacrifice fly to left field.

In the second inning, Jaworski and Meyers ripped two-out singles before Brett Edlbeck unloaded a run scoring double to rightcenter. On the play, Gillett used a nifty relay throw to gun down courtesy runner Zach Orlando at the plate.

DeLaet protected that 2-1 edge until his mates tacked on two more tallies in the fifth. Meyers opened the frame by ripping an 0-2 pitch to leftfield. After an Edlbeck bunt, DeLaet sent a two-strike run scoring double just inside the third base foul line. Carter capped the frame with a RBI bloop single to centerfield.

Gillett took advantage of two Wausaukee errors which allowed Alex Ransom to score in the sixth inning.

Crivitz Clobbers

Lena-STAA 14-4


Banging out 14 hits, Crivitz had no trouble earning a 14-4, 5-inning win over visiting Lena-STAA Tuesday.

Jake Sawinski sparked the uprising with a pair of triples, double and single while scoring 3 runs. Parker DeLosSanto and AJ Garcia added 3 hits and two runs each, Tyler Osmanski two hits while leadoff batter Cody Wolf scored three times.

Crivitz jammed the plate for 4 runs in the first, second and fourth innings before adding on two more in the fifth to win via the 10-run rule.

Garcia collected the mound win scattering 6 hits over 5 innings with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Landen Maccoux (4 innings) and Kiefer Powers shared mound chores for the Titans giving up 5 walks and fanning 8.



Wausaukee Whips

Stephenson 14-1


For the second time this season, the Rangers overpowered Stephenson for a lopsided 14-1 win Thursday. The Wausaukee warclubs were red hot punching out 11 hits to back the nifty 10 strikeout and two-hit mound effort from senior righthander Brett Edlbeck.

Holding a 3-0 lead after two innings, the Rangers jammed the plate for 7 runs in the third frame and 4 in the fifth to claim the 5-inning victory.

Clean-up swinger Austin Carter enjoyed a big day at the plate with a single, double and solo homer, scoring two runs and driving in 4.

Edlbeck aided his own cause with 2 hits and 2 RBIs while Cole Lewandowski, Eddy Self, Aaron Schlies and Joe Jaworski crossed the plate twice each.

Edlbeck struck out to open the game, but reached first base when the ball got past the catcher. A passed ball, stolen base and an error sent him home.

In the second frame, Schlies singled and Jaworski walked with two outs before Dillon Meyers and Edlbeck cracked run scoring singles.

Carter highlighted the 7 run third inning with 4 RBIs on a leadoff homer and 3-run double. Two Stephenson errors along with a RBI single by Edlbeck and hit from Beau DeLaet capped the attack.

Taking a 10-1 cushion into the fifth inning, Wausaukee added 4 more runs on singles by Lewandowski, Carter and Zach Struve (2 RBI).

Edlbeck allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks over 5 innings, finishing with 10 strikeouts and one run.

Coleman Takes Two

From Three Lakes


The talented Cougars chalked up two more wins Friday afternoon taking a doubleheader from visiting Three Lakes 9-0 and 12-7.

In the opener, a trio of Coleman hurlers combined to toss a nifty two hitter with 7 strikeouts and just one walk.

Starter Derek Marquardt looked overpowering in his two inning stint registering 5 strikeouts and allowing zero hits. First reliever Trevor Bushmaker earned the win with two frames of hitless ball with one whiff. Lucas Markiewicz got the call for the final three innings and gave up the lone hits.

Mitch Champagne punched out two hits in 3 trips to the plate, driving in a pair of runs. Trevor Seewald went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and two RBIs while winning pitcher Marquardt added a pair of safeties.

Ben Wales (3 2/2 innings) started for Three Lakes giving up 7 runs on 6 hits with 5 walks and one strikeout.

Game two saw Coleman jump out to a 7-0 spread after three frames before winning 12-7. Jake Engels paced the offense with 2 hits, 4 runs and 2 RBIs while Mason Mergener drilled a first inning two-run single.

Mason Mergener, the first of 3 pitchers, collected the win with 3 innings of one hit and 7 strikeout ball. Jake Engels and Mike Mergener added two innings of relief each.

Bulldogs Bounced

In Extra Innings 5-4


Winless Peshtigo saw a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning vanish into a 5-4, 8-inning loss to host Bonduel Friday.

After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Peshtigo tied the score on a one-out solo home run by Derek Koronkiewicz in the fourth.

Three more Bulldogs crossed the plate in the fifth inning on singles by Matt Borkovec and Cody Nielson, double off the bat of Trevor Bero to go along with a trio of walks.

Protecting the upper hand, Peshtigo watched Bonduel close within 4-2 in the sixth before Drew Wudtke launched a two-run homer in the seventh to send the contest into extra innings deadlocked at 4-all.

Bonduel pulled out the win in the 8th inning on a single by Taylor Kelley followed by a trio of walks.

Zach Neumann started for Peshtigo and allowed one run on one hit with 5 strikeouts and two walks over 3 innings. Reliever Jordan Berth was tagged with the loss, yielding 5 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and 8 strikeouts over the final 5 frames.

Nielson collected 2 of Peshtigo’s 5 hits with Bero, Koronkiewicz and Borkovec adding the remaining three safeties.

Jerad Staszak picked up the win with 5 innings in relief of starter Brandon Hagel.

Gillett Tops

Manawa 10-7


Bolstered by a 9-hit attack, the Gillett Tigers outslugged Manawa 10-7. Brad Mueller and Tyler Hischke tallied two hits each while Brady Hicks drew 4 walks.

The Tigers tallied 5 runs in the first inning, two in the second and fourth frames before adding on an insurance tally in the sixth.

Derek Zahn started for Gillett allowing one hit and one run over 3 innings to collect the win. Drew Patenaude (2-plus) and Matt Noffke (2) finished out the game. The trio fanned 8 and walked 8 while giving up 3 hits.

Gillett Defeats

White Lake 12-4


Combining 8 hits with 6 walks, Gillett turned back visiting White Lake Monday 12-4.

The Tigers needed just three frames to do all of their scoring...2 in the first, 6 in the third and 4 in the sixth.

Patenaude and Hischke lashed 2 hits each for Gillett. Hischke pounded out a double and triple while Zahn added a sixth inning three bagger.

Mueller picked up the mound win fanning 9 batters over 5 innings while giving up 2 hits and three runs.
