Gillett's Raatz, Marinette Golfers Pace 15-Team Field

What a difference a year makes!

After battling Mother Nature last year with sleet and rain that limited the meet to 9-holes, the 12th annual Peshtigo Invitational featured sunny skies and cool temps on Saturday at Little River Country Club in Marinette.

A total of 15 teams took part in the early season 18-hole classic, which saw Gillett’s Tyler Raatz card a brilliant 76 for medalist honors.

While Raatz topped the leaderboard, the team title went to first year coach Cary Waloway and his Marinette Marines with a score of 343.

Peshtigo was second at 345 followed by STAA 360, Crandon 371, Bonduel 372, Pembine 374, Coleman 375, Wausaukee 396, Menominee Indian 407, Marinette reserves 417, Suring 421, Gillett 440, Oconto 445, Crivitz 475 and Laona 490.

“Marinette had all five players in the 80’s...lead by senior Mitch Francois and a strong performance by sophomore Andy Swanson, were able to hold off the host Bulldogs by 2 strokes. Tyler Raatz of Gillett shot 76 to lead all individual scores...looks to be a force to reckoned with in the M-O this season,” Peshtigo coach and Little River pro Pete Kretz said. “Defending M-O medalist Steve Kilmer of Coleman and runner-up Mitchell Behnke started the golf season off with great scores of 83.”

Francois paced the Marines to the title with a round of 81...37 on the front nine and 44 on the back. Swanson added an 86 (44-42), Tyler Phillips 88 (45-43) and Marcus Maguire 88 (41-47).

“Mitch played fairly well and finished second overall. I’m looking forward to our scores going down as we get some matches under our belts,” Waloway said.

The runner-up Bulldogs were sparked by an 82 from Nick Miles (42-40), Mitchell Behnke shot 83 (43-40), Marcus Behnke 88 (46-42) and Jordan VanBeek 92 (44-48).

“This team could have won this event...2 shots is not much. For the first meet of the year, pretty happy with the scores. Marcus Behnke played through with a sore back and was able to help the team. Jordan VanBeek started poorly and did not give up, grounded it out and shot a decent score,” Kretz said.

“The team looks good enough to be one of the favorites in the M-O, but has a long way to go to get out of regionals that are being held at Little River. We will meet Marinette again in regionals, thus we must get better.

Lexi Wilson, bound for UW-Green Bay on a golf scholarship, lead STAA to a third place finish with an 84 (41-43). Mike Schmidt carded 88 (41-47), Nathan Faucett 91 (47-44) and Casey Boyle 97 (47-50).

“The team played great. A 41 by Schmidt, a freshman on the front 9, was excellent. Lexi struggled with her driver today but shot a respectable score of 84. She has better days to come,” STAA coach Budde Fifarek remarked. “The returning varsity players have the potential to be a strong team by the end of the year. All need to spend the extra time working on the little things that make a difference between decent and good. The entire team has the ability to advance as a group...team qualifying for WIAA sectionals is our goal.”

Finishing behind the round of 76 posted by Raatz were Francois, Marinette 81; Anthony Jazwiecki, Suring 82; Nick Miles, Peshtigo 82; Steve Kilmer, Coleman 83; Mitchell Behnke, Peshtigo 83; Willie Sekel, Crandon 84; Lexi Wilson, STAA 84; Andy Swanson, Marinette 86 and Anthony Schiefelbein, Pembine 87.

Coleman Claims

Triangular Tues.

Putting together a score of 194, Coleman took home top honors in a conference triangular at Hunter’s Glen Golf Course besting Wausaukee (196) and Gillett (199).

Steve Kilmer and Dan Pillath topped the Cougars with 44’s, Richard Geimer 52 and Alex Tisler 54.

Wausaukee was paced by Jared DeLaet and Logan Gruszynski with 47’s, Brandon Wesolowski shot 48 and Brice Sturmer 54.

Tyler Raatz earned medalist honors with a 39 for Gillett, Zak Peterson added 48, Kelsey Hischke and Melissa Meunier 56’s.

STAA Wins

Triangular

With Lexi Wilson and Mike Schmidt carding 45’s, STAA totaled 183 to defeat Peshtigo 187 and Lena 213 Tuesday at Little River.

Anthony Carlson added a 46 while Nathan Faucett and Casey Boyle shot 47 for the Cavaliers.

Peshtigo was sparked by a medalist round of 40 from Mitchell Behnke, Marcus Behnke 48, Jordan VanBeek 49 and Nick Miles 50.

Sam Beschta scored 45 for Lena, Blaik Fischer 54. Broc Bitters 56 and Cole Huberty 58.
