Marines Waste Mound Gem In 2-0 Setback

Looking for their second straight conference win, the Marines came up on the short end of a 2-0 road loss to West DePere Tuesday.

Marinette couldn’t have asked for much more of McMahon, who limited the Phantoms to just two hits, no earned runs, fanning 6 while walking three.

West DePere (9-4, 5-2) scored unearned runs in the first and sixth innings.

Control issues got McMahon in trouble in the opening frame as three walks and an error on the young hurler allowed Jack Paulson to cross the plate.

The Phantoms pushed across their second run in the sixth inning as two errors allowed Jay Tollefson to race home.

Marinette had two runners on base in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t score.

In the fourth frame, Eldredge singled and Kallestad slashed a double, before Ben Fredrick escaped trouble with strikeouts of Belonga and Brosig.

In the sixth Eldredge and Kallestad singled but were stranded following consecutive strikeouts.

Marinette’s final rally came in the 7th when Klumb and Klegin drew walks before Pettit grounded out to second base to end the game.

Marinette Leads 11-2,

Before Rains End Game

Enjoying one of their better outings of the spring with 9 hits, Marinette jumped out to an 11-2 lead after 3 1/2 innings before rain made the field unplayable. The Marines scored 4 runs in the first inning and 6 in the third to take control.

Nate Kallestad punched out a trio of singles and drove in 2 runs while Austin Belonga added 2 hits and 4 RBIs.

Belonga got Marinette rolling with three-run double in the first inning then added a RBI single in the third.

In the opening inning, Pettit and Klumb walked while Kallestad singled to left. Belonga followed with a booming double to leftcenter and 3-0 lead. After a balk, Belonga made his way home on a sac fly off the bat of Kelly.

Six hits keyed a 6-run third frame as Kelly singled, Johnson ripped a double down the rightfield line, Eldredge drove in one run with a single and Klegin added a two-run hit for a 6-0 spread. Heading to the top of the order, Pettit walked, Kallestad tripled in two runs before Belonga added a run scoring single.

Kelly worked 3 innings for Marinette allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts to earn the mound win.
