6 Gold Haul For M-O Track Stars Competing at the 9-team Rosholt Invitational Friday, a pair of M-O Conference schools registered six first place medals and 25 top three finishes. Peshtigo brought home five gold medals, 3 by the boys and two from the girls, while the Suring girls saw Stormy Gerndt capture top honors in the high jump.
Despite their five gold medals, Peshtigo could only muster up a 4th place mark for the girls and fifth for the boys. Meanwhile Suring used its depth to finish third in the gals race and 4th in the boys.
Our teams as a whole did well. We got some outstanding performances from distance runners Brandon Barrette and Jenny Metzler in the 3200. Barrette finished second in the 3200 while Metzler broke her own school record. Sanborns winning time came out of the first heat and this is his first year in the hurdles. In the 110 hurdles, he hit the second to last hurdle, fell and still placed, co-head coach Rick Neumann said.
Winning efforts for Peshtigo included the 800 relay foursome of Levi Sanborn, Trevor Igl, Colin Hass and Dieter Reed along with Levi Sanborn in the 300 hurdles and Zach Neumann shot put.
Dominating the 3200 event, the Bulldog gals saw senior Metzler run to a first place time of 11:59.14 while the relay quartet of Libby Abel, Taylor Sodini, Metzler and Anna Madsen crossed the finish line ahead of the pack.
Suring Gals 3rd,
Peshtigo Fourth
Combining a first place medal with four bronze sparked the Suring gals to a third place finish and 77 points.
Edgar won the meet with 231 points followed by Wittenberg-Birnamwood 133, Suring 77, Peshtigo 62, Wautoma 56, Amherst 52, Rosholt 50, Bonduel 21 and Stevens Point Pacelli 11.
Edgar is the defending state champion with most of their athletes returning from last year, Neumann added.
It was a clear day weatherwise as Surings Stormy Gerndt jumped her way to a trio of medals. The Eagle soared 52 in the high jump for first place then tacked on third place efforts in the long jump (156.75) and triple jump (327.5).
Suring notched two other bronze medals as Jenna Fabry ran a third place time in the 200 (27.77) along with the 400 relay foursome (58.01).
Taking home fifth place, the Bulldogs turned plenty of heads in the distance events. Metzler eclipsed her own school record 3200 time at 11:59.14 while the 3200 quartet pursed honors in 10:23.76.
Runner-up medals for Peshtigo included freshman Anna Madsen in the 1600 (5:44.02), Nicole Motkowski high jump (410) and the 800 relay team (2:00.49), consisting of Amy Parker, Motkowski, Heidi Angwall and Samantha Rauch.
