County Voters To Vote In State-Wide Primary Tuesday

Marinette County voters on Tuesday, May 8 will cast ballots in the statewide recall Republican and Democratic primaries for Governor, and Democratic primaries for Lt. Governor

There are also recall of four State Senators in Districts 13, 21, 23 and 29, none of which involve Marinette County voters.

Candidates for the Governor Republican Primary on Tuesday, May 8, are Gov. Scott Walker who is being challenged by Arthur Kohl-Riggs. The winner will then face off against the winner of the Democratic primary in the general recall election on June 5.

In the Democratic Primary the five candidates are Gladys R. Huber, State Senator Kathleen Vinehout, Secretary of State Doug La Follette, former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. The winner will face off against the May 8 Republican winner on June 5.

There are three Democratic candidates in the Lieutenant Governor Primary on May 8. They are Isaac Weix, Mahlon Mitchell and Ira Robins. The winner will face off against the Republican incumbent Rebecca Kleeflsch on June 5.

In both the Republican and Democrat primaries on May 8, voters can only vote for one candidate in each race.

Voters will not have to show photo identification as that requirement is still in the court system but they will be required to give their name and address and sign the poll list before voting.

Anyone registering at the polling place must have proof of residence and a Wisconsin driver’s license, ID card number or the last four digits of their Social Security number. Proof of residence can be established with a current lease, recent utility bill or other official document issued by a unit of government with the voter’s name and current address on it.

Under state law, the State Senate recalls are held in the districts used for the past decade, not the new districts that take effect in November of 2012.

The Government Accountability Board (G.A.B.), Wisconsin’s elections watchdog agency, cautions that there have been rumors that Governor Walker could avoid a final recall election on June 5 if he wins the Democratic primary by write-in votes. “This is untrue,” the G.A.B. said in a recent news release. “A person cannot be a candidate in two primaries for the same office.” Therefore, the G.A.B. has instructed clerks not to count write-in votes for anyone who is already a candidate in another primary for the same office. Since the governor is a primary candidate on the Republican Party ballot, any write-in votes for him in the Democratic Party are invalid and will not be counted.

Walker supporters are concerned that should too many Republicans cross over to vote for any candidate in the Democratic primary Governor Walker could lose the Republican primary and be automatically out of office after the June recall vote.

The G.A.B. also cautions voters to not wear campaign paraphernalia such as campaign buttons, shirts, hats, etc. inside the polling place. Anyone who does may be asked to cover it up or leave.
