Double Win Week Lifts Marines To 3-6

After notching a pair of Bay Conference baseball wins, the Marinette Marines improved their overall record to 7-8 and 3-6 in league play. The Marines split a home doubleheader with New London Saturday before knocking off Shawano Tuesday 11-3.

Marinette will face another busy week with 3 games in six days, starting with a road trip to Luxemburg-Casco on Thursday, May 3. The Marines will entertain Oconto Falls on Monday, May 7 and Hortonville on May 8.

Marines Earn Split

With New London

Marinette registered a Bay Conference doubleheader split with visiting New London Saturday, losing the opener 6-2 before bouncing back in game two for a 17-3 win.

In game one, Marinette took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning when New London scored 5 runs on 4 hits. The Bulldogs added their final run in the sixth.

Austin Belonga, the first of three hurlers, took the loss giving up 4 runs on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts and one walk. Jake McMahon and Max Hipke added relief help.

Marinette took a 1-0 first inning lead as Scott Eldredge drew a one-out walk, moved to second base on a throwing error by the pitcher before racing home on a single off the bat of Belonga.

After lashing a one-out single, Eldredge and the Marines were back at it in the second frame. An error allowed Belonga to reach base before Luke Kelly and Charlie Klumb drew walks to send Eldredge home.

Belonga, the workhorse of the Marine mound staff, protected the upper hand until the sixth when New London combined 4 hits with a walk and hit batsmen to gain the lead. Peyton Hofherr and Ethan Thiel collected RBI singles while Matt Ott was beaned with the bases loaded.

A one-out triple by Ben Mocadlo followed by a sac fly from Thiel gave New London the 6-2 win.

The visiting team in game two, Marinette battered a trio of hurlers for 14 hits in a 17-3 rout. The Marines scored 5 runs in the third inning and 9 in the seventh to take control.

Klumb topped the hit parade with 3 singles, two runs scored and 5 RBI; Hipke two singles, double and 3 RBI; Nathan Kallestad collected 2 hits, 3 runs and 2 RBI; Calvin Michiels 2 hits and 3 RBI.

Belonga singled and scored on a one-bagger by Hipke for a 1-0 second inning lead.

A 5-run third was highlighted by 4 hits....two-run single from Klumb, two-run double by Hipke and run scoring hit by Kallestad.

A single by Klumb drove in Kallestad (single) and Belonga (walk) in the fifth for a 8-0 spread.

Marinette saved its best offensive outburst for the 7th inning, sending 13 batters to the plate to score 9 runs on 4 hits. Four walks, two hit batsmen along with a 3-run double by Michiels highlighted the uprising. Aaron Pettit, Kallestad, Belonga and Kelly were credited with an RBI on walking or getting beaned with the bases loaded.

Kelly worked 6 innings for the win, scattering 4 hits, walking one while whiffing 5. Klumb worked a scoreless 7th inning.

Top Shawano

With the score deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the 6th, Marinette erupted for 9 runs on 4 hits to turn back host Shawano Tuesday 11-3.

A total of 14 batters stepped to the plate as Marinette was able to capitalize on a trio of fielding miscues.

Kallestad reached on an error to open the inning before Belonga unloaded a run scoring double and Kelly a RBI single. Sacrifice bunts by Klumb and winning pitcher Jake McMahon moved runners up before Derek Klegin slapped a RBI single.

Two walks, sac fly off the bat of Scott Eldredge, error along with run scoring hits by Kelly and Klumb (2 RBI) sent the final runners home.

McMahon was the recipient of the offensive support to earn the mound win. The junior righthander allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Marinette scored twice in the 5th to battle back from a 2-0 deficit. Klegin lashed a two-out single, moved to third on a stolen base and wild pitch before being joined on the sacks by Aaron Pettit (walk). Both runners scooted home on a two-run single off the bat of Eldredge.

Hunter Hoffman, the first of three Shawano hurlers, absorbed the loss yielding 3 runs on 6 hits over 5 1/3 innings.
