Takes 9-0 Mark Into M-O Season Finale Against Wausaukee

Pre-season favorite Coleman ran its M-O Conference baseball winning streak to 9 straight and earned a share of league honors along the way. The conference title is the third in the past 4 years for coach Kent Casper and fifth since the M-O began baseball in 2001.

Ranked third in the Division 4 state polls and owning a plush 19-1 overall readout, the Cougars blanked three conference foes during the week. Coleman blasted Lena-STAA 17-0, Gillett 10-0 and Crivitz 4-0.

With just one league outing left on the schedule, Thursday entertaining second place Wausaukee, coach Kent Casper knows his troops will be in for a battle.

Wausaukee will be no walk in the park as Bill Wickman’s troops sport an 18-1 readout, 8-1 in the M-O to go along with a number four ranking in the D-4 polls.

The Rangers knocked off Peshtigo 4-1 and Lena-STAA 18-1 to stay within a game of the league leading Cougars.

“It wasn’t an easy win against Crivitz. Sure we won a share of the conference, but we have to be ready for Wausaukee on Thursday. It will be a big game and could give us plenty of momentum heading into the post-season. Mason Mergener will start pitching for us and if needed, we have some rested arms in reserve,” Coleman coach Kent Casper said.

Elsewhere in conference action, Peshtigo (5-11, 5-4) won 2 of three games to move above the .500 mark blasting Lena-STAA 15-3 before clipping Gillett in 8 innings Tuesday 8-7.

Gillett’s lone win of the week came in an 8-1 rout of Crivitz (6-11).

Peshtigo will close out conference play hosting Crivitz Thursday while Gillett (7-9, 3-6) takes the hike to Marinette to take on Lena-STAA.

Coleman Is Too

Tough For Titans

Collecting 12 hits and 13 walks, Coleman had too much of everything in routing host Lena-STAA 17-0.

The Cougars were sparked at the plate by leadoff batter Mitch Champagne with a single, two doubles and 4 runs scored. Jake Engels and Trevor Seewald added 2 hits each while Mike Mergener and winning pitcher Trevor Bushmaker drove in 3 runs each.

“All four of our pitchers did a good job as we gave up 3 hits and did not issue any walks. We hit the ball hard and broke the game open with 8 runs in the third inning,” Coleman coach Kent Casper said.

Bushmaker earned the win with 2 innings of one hit ball, fanning 3 and aiding the offense with a bases clearing double in the third inning. Engels, Mike and Mitch Champagne added one inning of relief work each.

Owning a 10-zip spread after 3 frames, Coleman added 3 runs in the fourth and 5 in the fifth to win going away.

Kiefer Powers took the loss yielding 10 runs and 7 hits over 2 1/3 innings.

Edlbeck And Rangers

Defeat Peshtigo 4-1

Senior righthander Brett Edlbeck fashioned a complete game two hitter with 4 strikeouts and no walks as Wausaukee remained in second place with a hard-earned 4-1 win over visiting Peshtigo.

Edlbeck unloaded 75 pitches in the 7 inning affair, giving up a second inning single to Tom Quigley and fourth inning RBI single to Cody Nielson.

“I was very happy with the way we played and our defense. Brett pitched extremely well, not walking any and giving up those 2 hits,” Wausaukee coach Bill Wickman said. “This was a big game for us as far as tournament seeding with a win over a Division 3 team.”

The Rangers got on the scoreboard in the opening frame as Edlbeck walked, stole second, moved to third on a grounder to the right side by Beau DeLaet before scoring on a Cole Lewandowski groundout to short.

Edlbeck protected that slim lead until the fourth, when Peshtigo sprung for its lone run. Joey Sparks saw his grounder to short get misplayed by DeLaet and quickly moved to second base on a passed ball. After Nick Sparks went down on strikes, Cody Nielson ripped a run scoring single.

Deadlocked at 1-1, Wausaukee wasted a golden scoring opportunity in the fourth inning when DeLaet and Lewandowski punched out singles. With runners standing at second and third, Peshtigo pitcher Jordan Berth escaped trouble getting cleanup swinger Austin Carter to pop up to second base while whiffing Eddy Self and Zach Struve. Coach Wickman did try to suicide squeeze twice with Self up, but he couldn’t get the bunt down.

“We had a great chance to score. Eddy didn’t see the squeeze sign the first time and we were lucky Beau got back to third. He fouled off the second one and that was it. Give Jordan Berth credit, he pitched out of a jam and did a great job on the mound. It looked like he was in control of all his pitches,” Wickman remarked.

With the score still tied heading into the sixth, Wausaukee shook loose for 3 runs on 2 hits. After Edlbeck grounded out to open the frame, DeLaet singled, stole second and was joined on the sacks by Lewandowski (walk). Carter came through with a hot shot to third, which got past Matt Borkovec to load the bases. The runs finally came home as Self singled in DeLaet, Struve completed a successful suicide squeeze bunt to bring Lewandowski home before Carter scored when a grounder by Schlies was booted by Bero at short.

Taking that 4-1 lead into the seventh, Edlbeck closed the door by getting Nielson to groundout, Quigley on a fly ball before whiffing Derek Koronkiewicz.

Berth took the loss allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and two walks over 5 1/3 innings. Zach Neumann registered one strikeout while giving up a run and a hit in the final 2/3 of an inning.

“This was one of our better games of the year as both pitchers threw well. Unfortunately you are not going win many games with two hits. We got into trouble a couple of times, but worked our way out which is a step in the right direction. Jordan did a real nice job pitching.....had good control of his curveball and got ahead of the hitters for the most part,” Peshtigo coach Pat Robbins said.

Gillett Tops

Crivitz 8-1

Gillett righthander Derek Zahn gave up 4 hits and and fanned 3 in a complete game 8-1 win over visiting Crivitz.

The Tigers gave Zahn plenty of support, scoring 4 runs in the first inning and two in the fourth to pry open a comfortable lead.

Seth Rudie paced Gillett with 2 hits, Drew Patenaude pounded a two-run double while Mike Scharenbrock added a two-run single.

In the four run first inning, Brad Mueller, Brady Hicks and Scharenbrock lashed singles while Tyler Hischke singled and scored in the third inning for a 5-1 spread.

In the fourth frame, Patenaude doubled in Rudie (single) and Bryce Cibulka (single) while Alex Ransom reached on an error and scored in the fifth.

Cody Wolf was tagged with the mound setback giving up 8 runs on 8 hits.

Marquardt, Coleman

Pound Gillett 10-Zip

Letting loose for 11 hits and 4 walks, Coleman knocked off visiting Gillett 10-0 in 5-innings. The Cougars built up a 6-0 spread after 4 frames before ending the contest with a 4 run fifth.

While the offense had plenty of punch, junior righthander Derek Marquardt recorded 10 strikeouts while giving up just 3 hits to earn the win.

Punching out two hits each for Coleman were Champagne, Engels, Mitch Mergener (doubles) and Lucas Markiewicz.

Marquardt ran into some control issues in the opening frame, beaning leadoff batter Brad Mueller on a 1-2 pitch. Mueller stole second, went to third on a wild pitch before being joined on the sacks by Tyler Hischke (walk). With one out, Gillett tried a double steal with Mueller getting tagged out at the plate by catcher Mason Mergener.

Coleman took the lead for good in the bottom of the first as Mason Mergener walked, stole second and scored on a single by Engels.

Mitch Mergener ripped the first of his two doubles in the second and scored on a single by Markiewicz.

In the third, Engels singled, Marquardt walked and Mitch Mergener added a two-run double.

Run scoring groundouts by Mason Mergener and Marquardt upped the lead to 6-0 in the fourth before Coleman closed things out with 4 runs in the fifth on 3 hits. Bushmaker walked to open the frame, Markiewicz doubled (RBI), Champagne singled, Mike Mergener walked, Mason Mergener added a two-run single, Engels reached on an error before a wild pitch sent the final run home.

Peshtigo Pounds

Lena-STAA 15-3

In another makeup clash from Tuesday, Peshtigo combined 9 hits with 8 walks to claim a 15-3, 5-inning win over Lena-STAA.

Cody Nielson and Tom Quigley paced the offense with 3 hits each, Joey Sparks added 2 hits and 4 runs scored while Trevor Bero crossed the plate 3 times.

The Bulldogs owned an 8-2 lead when the rains hit on Tuesday and quickly disposed on the Titans in the rescheduled affair Friday. Peshtigo added 3 runs in the third and 4 in the fourth to win going away.

Nielson ripped a two-run single in the second inning while Quigley added a RBI single. In the third Nielson doubled and Quigley chipped in with a single. Singles by Joey Sparks and Nielson along with a double off the bat of Quigley upped the lead to 15-3.

Matt Borkovec earned the mound win allowing 3 runs on two hits with 7 strikeouts and two walks.

Kiefer Powers and Jameson Bardowski shared mound chores for the Titans.

The lone hits given up by Borkovec were first inning singles by Dom Ramirez and Dean Jopek.

Coleman Clinches

Share Of M-O Title

Making the most of 7 hits off losing pitcher Cody Wolf, Coleman earned a share of the league title with a 4-0 win Tuesday. After being blanked for two innings, the Cougars pushed across one run in the third and 2 in the fourth to pull away.

“Crivitz played well and really believed in themselves after beating Gibraltar on Saturday. Their shortstop and third baseman made some nice plays while Wolf pitched a good game. He beaned Marquardt twice, but other than that did not walk any batters,” Casper said. “Our kids have been sleep walking lately and needed to get challenged by somebody. We started out slow, but the important thing is we won.”

In the third inning, Trevor Seewald lashed a one-out single, but was erased on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Mitch Champagne. After moving to second base on an error by Wolf, Champagne raced home on a two-out double by Mike Mergener.

Coleman upped the lead to 3-0 in the fourth as winning hurler Derek Marquardt was plunked by a pitch and scored on a two-out single by Trevor Bushmaker. A single by Lucas Markiewicz and an error plated Marquardt.

Mike Mergener doubled with two-outs in the 7th and scored following a stolen base and error on the catcher.

Marquardt picked up the mound win allowing one hit, fanning 5 and walking 5 over 5 innings. Mitch Mergener registered a trio of strikeouts and gave up a hit over the final two frame.

“Marquardt threw well, but got down on himself a bit. We told him don’t worry about it and got some key strikeouts to keep Crivitz off the scoreboard,” Casper added.

Lewandowski Tosses

Two-Hitter As Rangers

Roll Past Titans 19-1

Making his first conference start on the hill, southpaw Cole Lewandowski needed just 67 pitches to toss a 5-inning, 19-1 win over Lena-STAA. The lefty gave up a pair of singles, walked 3 and fanned 6 in his performance.

The Ranger offense busted loose for 19 runs on 14 hits, highlighted by a home run, triple, single and 5 RBIs from freshman Aaron Schlies.

Austin Carter also drove in 5 runs with a first inning single and second inning 3-run homer, Brett Edlbeck scored 4 times, Beau DeLaet and Joe Jaworski added two hits each.

Wausaukee jammed the plate for 5 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks in the first frame. Carter drove in two runs with a single while Schlies cleared the bases with a three-run round tripper.

The Rangers got back in the scoring column in the second inning with 4 runs on 3 hits. Edlbeck launched a one-out triple, DeLaet RBI single and Carter a three-run blast.

Leading 9-0, Wausaukee lashed 6 hits to score 7 runs for a commanding lead. DeLaet had a RBI single, Lewandowski two-run double, Zach Struve two-run single and Schlies a run scoring triple.

Run scoring singles off the bats of Eddy Self and Schlies pushed across two more runs in the fourth for a 19-0 spread.

The Titans finally cracked the scoring column in the fifth when Justin Miler singled and scored on an error and two wild pitches.

Peshtigo Pockets 8-7

Thriller In Extra Innings

A bass loaded one-out single by Cody Nielson carried Peshtigo to a thrilling 8-7, 8-inning win over visiting Gillett. The game winning hit capped a huge rally, which saw the Bulldogs battle back from a 5-0 third inning deficit.

Number nine hitter Matt Borkovec opened the winning rally with a single and moved to second base on a bunt by Trevor Bero. Joey Sparks singled Borkovec to third before Nick Sparks was walked. Up stepped Nielson, who singled on a 1-0 pitch for the win.

Joey Sparks knocked out 3 of Peshtigo’s 9 hits, including a pair of doubles while Nielson added a single and two-bagger.

Reliever Zach Neumann earned the mound win allowing 2 runs and 3 hits over 5 2/3 innings of starter Jordan Berth.

Trailing 5-0, Peshtigo scored 3 runs in the third on doubles by Bero and Nielson before knotting the score in the fifth on a groundout from Tom Quigley and single by Derrick Koronkiewicz.

Gillett regained the upper hand at 7-5 in the seventh on two errors and a RBI single from Eric Fischer.

Back came the Bulldogs...again!

This time Joey Sparks opened the 7th inning rally with a double, Nick Sparks walked and Nielson moved both runners up a base with a bunt. After Quigley fanned, Koronkiewicz walked and Gunner Kinney slapped a two-run single to knot the score at 7-all.

Matt Noffke took the loss yielding 3 runs on 5 hits over the final 3 innings in place of starter Derek Zahn.

Mike Scharenbrock and Alex Ransom lashed two hits each for Gillett .

Coleman Clobbers

Sevastopol 13-1

Mike and Mitch Mergener lashed two hits each and drove in a pair of runs to lead Coleman to a lopsided 13-1 win over Sevastopol Saturday.

Younger brother Mason allowed 3 hits over 4 innings before Mitch came on to register the final 3 outs. Mason fanned one and did not walk any during his mound stint, while Mitch picked up a pair of strikeouts in the fifth.

Coleman erupted for 8 runs in the first inning on 2 hits and 6 walks as Mike Mergener ripped a single and double.

Three more Cougars crossed the plate in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Trevor Seewald.

Jake Engels doubled in Mason Mergener (walk) in the third. Mason Mergener and Engels lashed consecutive singles to drive in Mike Mergener in the fourth.

Wausaukee Whips

White Lake Twice

In a non-conference doubleheader Saturday, Wausaukee whipped visiting White Lake 10-0 and 20-3.

Game one saw the Rangers score 3 runs in the first, second and fourth frames while adding on a solo tally in the fifth.

Southpaw Cole Lewandowski needed just 63 pitches to fire a 5-inning, one hitter with 5 strikeouts and one walk in the opener.

Beau DeLaet lashed a double, single and scored 3 runs; Brennen Gabriel added two singles and two runs scored while Lewandowski sent 3 runs home with a two-run single and RBI triple.

Luke Wickersheim was battered for 10 runs on 9 hits with 6 walks.

Wausaukee kept the offense in high gear for the nightcap, tallying 4 runs in the first, 7 in the second, 4 in the third before capping the day with 5 runs in the fourth.

DeLaet enjoyed a huge game with two singles, two doubles, 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Brett Edlbeck added a single and two doubles, 3 runs and 4 RBIs; Zach Struve single, double, two runs and 3 RBIs; Gabriel triple, single, 3 runs and 3 RBIs while Austin Carter scored 4 runs.

Aaron Schlies was the winning pitcher fanning 7 and walking 5, giving up 2 hits and 3 runs over 5 innings.

Joe Kubacki singled and scored both runs for White Lake.

Austin Conn, Jake Wagner and Jeff Jeter shared mound chores for the Lakers, being roughed up for 15 hits, 20 runs, 9 walks and 6 wild pitches.

Crivitz Earns Split

In Saturday Action

Crivitz came up with a split at the Viking Classic Saturday, nipping host Gibraltar 5-4 before falling to Freedom 8-0.

The third game played saw Gibraltar rout Freedom 11-1 in 5 innings.

Against Gibraltar, the Wolverines opened up a 5-0 spread after three frames and held on. A 4-run uprising in the third was keyed by a two-run double off the bat of Jake Sawinski.

AJ Garcia earned the mound win allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with 7 walks and just one strikeout. Garcia pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th with a strikeout, flyball and groundout.

Taking on Freedom in game two, Crivitz was no match for hard throwing Nick Lamers, who fanned 19 batters while giving up just one hit, a single by Garcia.

Randy Martin was roughed up for 6 runs on 9 hits over 4 innings before Sawinski closed out the game.

Gillett Splits

With Elcho

In a Saturday twinbill, Gillett claimed the opener 11-1 in 5-innings before falling 9-8 in the nightcap to Elcho.

Tyler Hischke and Seth Rudie punched out 2 hits each in the 11-1 win to back the 5-hit pitching of Brady Hicks. The Gillett hurler fanned 6, walked 4, and allowed an earned run.

Key hits for Gillett included a two-run double by Seth Rudie in the first inning, Eric Fischer two-run double in the third and Hicks added a two-run triple in the fourth.

In a high scoring second game, Gillett owned a 3-1 edge after one inning before trailing 9-5 heading into the sixth. The Tigers rallied for 3 runs but couldn’t overcome that big deficit.

Hischke lashed a run scoring single in the first and Derek Zahn added a triple in the fifth.

Bryce Cibulka, Brad Mueller and Matt Noffke pitched for Gillett.
