City Of Peshtigo Bridge Work To Start On Monday

Replacement of the bridge over the Peshtigo River in the City of Peshtigo will start on Monday, June 11, according to Mayor Al Krizenesky. It is expected to take 70 working days to complete the project. Work might also be done on weekends to meet the completion schedule. It will be a 10 hour workday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Completion is scheduled for about Friday, Sept. 14.

To assist residents to reach either side of the river during construction there will be free bus service and a pedestrian walkway, Krizenesky said.

Free Bus Service will also go into effect on Monday, June 11, and will transport residents to either side of the river from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, Monday through Sunday. Wheelchairs will be accommodated with prior notice to Westlund Bus Lines at 715-732-0238 or call them for more route information.

Pickup of passengers will be 8 a.m. from the Peshtigo Pharmacy, 8:05 a.m. at Lee’s Family Foods, 8:10 a.m. at Woodland Manor Street Apartments, 8:20 a.m. at the Drees Community Center and 8:25 a.m. at the East Side Ball Fields. The route will take about 25 minutes and start over again at the Peshtigo Pharmacy. Upon boarding the bus, passengers should inform the driver where they wish to be dropped off. If necessary, stops will also be made at churches and nursing homes.

Adjustments will be made to the schedule as necessary as needs arise. A 14 passenger bus will be used at first and a 48 passenger bus will be available if necessary.

Mayor Krizenesky reported length of the bus service will depend on its usage. If the service is not warranted it will be discontinued or cut back after one month. Cost of the bus service is provided by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT).

Motorists will have to use the U.S. 41 by-pass to reach either side of the river.

Pedestrians Walkway will open Saturday, June 9, for pedestrians to cross the river onthe old railroad bridge of BPM., Inc. It will be lighted at night and open 24 hours a day.

Pedestrian Bridge & Pathway Rules:

* Bridge is for non-motorized traffic only.

* Fences are for your safety, stay off them.

* Stay on designated pathways.

* No smoking or alcohol on any BPM property.

* Fishing from bridge is not allowed.

* Any vandalism, graffiti, littering or tampering with lights could result in the bridge being closed.

* Do your part to keep the pathway safe, clean and open.

* Parking allowed along the tree line and in the mill parking lot adjacent to West Front St. See signs. Do not park in semi-trailer lot.

There has been much thought in providing ways for residents to reach either side of the river with much of the work and supplies donated by volunteers and firms.

Ryan Haulotte, operating manager at Aacer Flooring, Peshtigo, listed the firm as donating the sheeting for for the pedestrian pathway. BPM provided labor, electrical work, yard crew, engineering and coordinated the project.

John Madtson of J&M Electric, Marinette, did the electric work. Jesse LaBrosse helped as did Dave (Hambone) Heinz, both of BPM, Inc. with the construction. Steve Peterich of BPM, Inc. was the engineer.

Boy Scout Gary Rietz, Peshtigo Troop 1054, as a scout project cleared brush, fencing and painted signs for the walkway bridge. He thanked Tom Evancheck and Mark Brabant for providing adult supervision and his friends and family for their help and support.

During the pathway bridge work, fencing was provided by the Department of Transportation and Lee’s Family Foods donated food and refreshments.

A meeting of city officials, contractors, DOT, Westlund Bus Lines and other officials was held Wednesday, June 6, in Green Bay to go over last minute details and revisions if necessary, Krizenesky reported.

Total cost of the new bridge is $3.8 million which is $2.4 million for the bridge and $1.4 million for roadway work. At the same time WPS will perform maintenance on the dam. Refilling of the Peshtigo River Reservoir is expected to start in late August and should take about one month.

A short history of the bridge noted a new bridge was constructed in 1924 and expanded in 1956 and rebuilt in 1985 which is the present bridge. Timbers from the first wooden bridge built in Peshtigo are still part of the present bridge.
