Bridge reconstruction began Monday, June 11.

City Provides Assistance In Bridge Replacement

Replacement of the U.S. Business 41 project, including replacement of the present bridge, began Monday, June 11, as scheduled. The project includes two miles of Business 41 from South Dolan Ave. to Old Peshtigo Road. The $3.8 million project is expected to be completed by mid-October, according to the DOT.

The Peshtigo Department of Public Works provided assistance on Monday, June 11, with its heavy duty compressor when the contractor’s compressor was inadequate to remove bolts holding the light poles on the bridge and safety rail.

Residents are undertaking the project well as they use the pedestrian bridge, free bus service and other means to move around during construction.

General contractor for the project is Lunda Construction, Hilbert. The existing road will be resurfaced and the bridge replaced. The bridge work will include decorative lighting. Additionally, there will be curb and gutter repairs and some rebuilding of storm sewer inlets and manholes.

During the project, the roadway will be closed from NW Front Street to Pine Street. The remainder of the project will remain open with single-lane closures from 6 a.m. Monday to noon Friday. Work will be suspended from noon, Tuesday, July 3 to 6 a.m. to Thursday, July 5 and again for Labor Day from noon Friday, Aug. 31 to 6 a.m. to. Tuesday, Sept. 4. Motorists are urged to use caution in the construction zone.

No motorized heavy construction equipment will be allowed to operate during the evening and overnight between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. in consideration of residents.

Bus service and a pedestrian walkway south of the current bridge will operate during the project.

Mayor Al Krizenesky made an inspection of the project on Monday, June 11 and reported the free bus rides were in operation and run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. He also said the pedestrian bridge is being used daily by many residents.

Tom Westlund of Westlund Bus Lines which provides the free bus service reported good response on the first day of operation on Monday as 19 riders used the service. They included trips to downtown businesses, Senior Center and Peshtigo High School where some students from the east side participated in workouts. The use on Tuesday, June 12, was seven as the Senior Center was closed for the day. He anticipates heavier use of the free bus service will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

He reported no changes in the route scheduled are contemplated at present as the first day of operation went very well.

Free Bus Service operates from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Pickup of passengers is 8 a.m. from the Peshtigo Pharmacy, 8:05 a.m. at Lee’s Family Foods, 8:10 a.m. at Woodland Manor Street Apartments, 8:20 a.m. at the Drees Civic Center and 8:25 a.m. at the East Side Ball Fields. The route will take about 25 minutes and start over again at the Peshtigo Pharmacy. Upon boarding the bus, passengers should inform the driver where they wish to be dropped off. If necessary, stops will also be made at churches and nursing homes. Wheelchairs will be accommodated with prior notice to Westlund at 715-732-0238.

Pedestrians Walkway has seen a lot of use as pedestrians cross the river over the old railroad bridge of BPM., Inc. It is lighted at night and open 24 hours a day.

Pedestrian Bridge & Pathway Rules:

* Bridge is for non-motorized traffic only.

* Fences are for your safety, stay off them.

* Stay on designated pathways.

* No smoking or alcohol on any BPM property.

* Fishing from bridge is not allowed.

* Any vandalism, graffiti, littering or tampering with lights could result in the bridge being closed.

* Do your part to keep the pathway safe, clean and open.

* Parking allowed along the tree line and in the mill parking lot adjacent to West Front St. See signs. Do not park in semi-trailer lot.

Motorists will have to use the U.S. 41 by-pass to reach either side of the river. The trip is about 6 1/2 miles and takes about 10 minutes.
