Crivitz Wins Pair To Pace Wishigan; Birds Battered 10-6

Notching a pair of impressive wins, the Crivitz Wolves took over first place in the Wishigan League with a 3-0 record.

The Wolves, 3-3 overall, tipped Escanaba 3-1 Saturday before handing Tri-City a 16-6 whipping Sunday. The lopsided win over Tri-City was highlighted by a 13 hit attack that included 4 hits, a pair of home runs and 7 RBIs from slugger Jake Johnston.

Felch sits in second place at 2-0 followed by Tri-City (3-1) and the defending champion Marinette Redbirds (1-0).

After getting battered by the Green Bay Storm Thursday 10-6 in a non-league outing, the Marinette Redbirds return to Wishigan League action Wednesday hosting Felch at 7:30pm.

The defending league and playoff champion Redbirds will head to Gillett Sunday for a doubleheader starting at noon.

Crivitz Cleans Up

On Escanaba 3-1

Scott Evosevich and Jake Johnston socked out two hits each to back the 11 strikeout performance from Jeff Baumann as Crivitz topped Escanaba 3-1 Saturday.

Baumann yielded 3 hits while fanning 5 during a 7-inning mound effort.

The Wolves fell behind 1-0 in the first inning as Josh Broderson got aboard on an error and scored when Jim Barnes saw his flyball get misplayed.

Crivitz got even in the second frame when Johnston tripled and scooted home on a sac fly off the bat of Baumann.

In the 6th inning, the Wolves pushed across two more runs on three hits. Geoff Sparks opened the frame with a single and raced home on a double by Evosevich. Johnston followed with a RBI two-bagger to score Evosevich.

Jon Bintner took the loss giving up 7 hits, 3 earned runs and fanning 5 over 6 innings.

Crivitz Pounds Out

13 Hits In 16-6 Win

Over Tri-City Sun.

It was the Jake Johnston show Sunday as the veteran unloaded two homers, scored 3 times and drove in 7 runs in a 16-6 whipping of Tri-City.

Johnston blasted a two-run homer in the first inning then added a grand slam to centerfield in the third.

Punching out two hits each for Crivitz were Jordan Hardy (4 runs), Kory Weed (3 runs and 2 RBIs) and Evosevich (3 runs, RBI).

In the first inning, Hardy singled then jogged home as Johnston blasted a two-run homer.

Johnston flexed his muscle again in the third inning plating Hardy, Weed and Evosevich with a grand slam homer.

Crivitz broke the game open in the fifth frame, scoring 5 runs. Evosevich singled and raced home on a DeLosSantos’ hit. Johnston scored on an error while Nick Winters, Hardy and Dylan Hanson crossed the plate following a wild pitch and Weed’s two-run double. Weed tallied the final run on a single by Evosevich.

Three more Crivitz runners scored in the 7th to win via the 10-run rule. Hardy and Weed singled, Evosevich walked, Johnston singled, Baumann walked before Kyle Johnston ended the game with a single.

Evosevich was the winning pitcher fanning 9 and yielding 5 hits over 5 innings. Baumann recorded one strikeout and gave up 4 hits in two innings of relief work.

Farzac Uren and Jeremy Rae topped Tri-City with two hits each.

Uren started for Tri-City giving up 2 runs on 2 hits with 5 strikeouts over 2 innings before being relieved by losing pitcher Marcus Garner (3 innings) and Matt Jaksetic (2 innings). Garner was lit up for 11 runs (10 earned) on 7 hits and 4 walks as the trio combined for 11 strikeouts.

Redbirds Struggle

Against Storm 10-6

Despite owning a 10-9 edge in hits, the Redbirds came up on the short end on the scoreboard in falling to the Green Bay Storm Thursday 10-6. The Marinette batters struck out 16 times against a trio of hurlers.

“We hit the ball but Green Bay had more key hits which ended up being the difference,” coach Nick Brukardt said. “Aaron Woods pitched excellent in relief of Mitch Kushava, striking out 10 in 4 innings.”

Redbird starter Kushava was roughed up for 9 runs on 7 hits over 4 innings before Woods got the call for the final 4 frames.

The southpaw Woods was scheduled to play in North Carolina for the remainder of the summer, but returned after changing his mind and arrived in Green Bay for the game. Woods gave up 2 hits and one run while walking two.

Marinette did take a 2-0 first inning lead as Jordan Powers and Cully Falkenberg opened the game with singles. A wild pitch and single by Jason Hofer sent the runs home.

Green Bay countered with 4 runs in their half of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Cody Pangrazzi.

The birds regained the upper hand at 5-4 in the third inning on just one hit, a single by Falkenberg. Powers walked to get things started, Falkenberg singled, Hofer reached on an error and Cody Woods was beaned with the bases loaded. Todd Olsen drew a free pass to score Falkenberg while Rasner added a sac fly.

One swing of Doug Coe’s bat (home run) got the Storm even in the third before Marinette pushed across their final run in the fourth. Falkenberg lashed a two-out single and raced home on Hofer’s double.

That was it for Marinette as the Storm scored 4 runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to win going away. Coe singled and Pangrazzi doubled to put the Storm up 9-6 while Coe lashed his fourth hit of the game, a double in the sixth and scored on an error.

Michael Robbins, nephew of Peshtigo Bulldog baseball coach Pat Robbins, started for the Storm and worked 3 innings before giving way to Nick Schadrie and Nick Preboski.
