Letter to the Editor

I write to address negative and untrue statements made by Tom Faller in his campaign announcement for Marinette County Register of Deeds.

Mr. Faller and others have claimed that Renee Miller was appointed as a political favor to me, this is not the case and I will set the record straight once and for all.

In early 2011 I was asked to endorse three candidates for appointment to the vacant Register of Deeds position. The candidates were the former Deputy Register of Deeds, Renee Miller, a long time friend, and another acquaintance. My only communication with the Governor’s office prior to the interview was an email which I still have. In this email I shared the names of these candidates with the Governor’s staff saying I would be supportive of any of the three. Two of the three candidates I supported were later interviewed in Madison. The only other communication on this matter came in a phone call from the Governor’s Chief of Staff following the interviews. I was told that Renee had interviewed exceptionally well and that they were very impressed with her; however she was the number two choice. The former deputy had finished the process as the number one candidate. It was only after a background check raised concerns that it was decided to go with the number two choice Renee Miller. I want to make this clear at no time did I ask for any special treatment for Ms. Miller. She earned this position on her own merit.

Mr. Faller claims that candidates with knowledge of the office were passed over. It would seem that this is a case of sour grapes. Other than the former deputy, I was not asked nor did I have knowledge of the candidacy of any other person with experience. It seems that Mr. Faller is of the opinion that somehow he and others were entitled to this position regardless of how they performed in an interview. This attitude of entitlement is arrogant and unproductive. It is worthy of acknowledging that the Register of Deeds is elected by the people and that no requirements or previous experience are required to be elected. It is also important to note that the Register of Deeds position is a partisan position and it has been traditionally accepted that the sitting Governor appoint a member of his party to open positions. Mr. Faller is an active member of the Democrat Party.

Mr. Faller has every right to campaign for this position; it should be of concern to voters, however, that the announcement of his candidacy is filled with negative comments and misstated information. I have faith in the ability of Renee Miller to lead an effective office which puts the needs of the people of Marinette first and I am confident that the Governor made a wise choice.

I would like to thank the parents, students and community for all your support throughout the 2012 baseball season. It was a fantastic year!

The community and student body support for the recent state tournament, held in Appleton, was unbelievable. To think that we had so many followers on two weekday mornings says a lot about this community. Each time I was heading back to our dugout I was amazed at the “sea of green” before my eyes. I’m sure there is no other community in the state that comes out in full force to support their student athletes like this one does. It was certainly appreciated and aided in our comeback rally in the championship game. It was so incredible to see and hear the whole stadium rocking with cheers and excitement.

I would like to mention a very special heartfelt thank you to this amazing baseball team. We had an unreal ride this year � one that I will never forget. From the beginning of the season, we were always being told that we would be state champs. The pressure was certainly on. We all shared this same goal, but if you know anything about baseball, the best team doesn’t always prevail. With hard work, determination and drive our goal became a reality. We not only persevered and came back to win the game, we set many new records in our championship game against Johnson Creek.

I am extremely honored to be working with this group of young men. They are outstanding athletes but even more importantly, they possess such wonderful character. It’s evident they will carry this trait through the rest of their lives and be very successful.

Lastly, I would like to thank my assistant coaches, Chris Gould, Doug Jahnke and Todd Olsen. These gentlemen are all very knowledgeable about baseball and share the same vision of being the best that we can be. They all have a unique way of working with the boys and I consider myself fortunate to be surrounded by such great individuals.

To the Editor:

With the reelection of Governor Walker it is time for the vocal minority to sit down and close their mouths. The silent majority has spoken and once again reaffirmed that they want and support the changes that Governor Walker has made. Mayor Barrett has now lost three times so perhaps he will get the message?

If a person’s job is unbearable they can quit. If this state is so bad perhaps they should move out?

The government of the people, for the people and by the people seems to need some updates. Scott Walker has started changes that the state needs to survive as well as grow and prosper.

Perhaps what this state and the country could use next is term limits on all political offices? The Office of President of the United States, after all, is limited to two consecutive terms so why not limit all political offices?

There are too many places where voters are stuck with the same few representatives in the same offices for way too long. County, Town, Village and School Boards, Assembly, Senate, etc. all would benefit from periodic changes to personnel. New fresh ideas might help the economy improve quicker?

Maybe just doing things differently would also make for better government? In many cases if the board meetings were in the evening or on weekends more taxpayers would be able to attend and run for the offices. After all, many folks cannot go to meetings during the day or at night due to work schedules. Most employers won’t give employees time off during the day even with them using precious vacation time.

Getting our elected folks to make changes will not be easy. Many of them are stuck in a rut. Lots of them don’t want changes to their world which we learned from the vocal minority which resulted in the recall election. They had enough signatures according to the law to force a do over but not enough to make changes!
