Ila Harper Ila Harper, 86, a well-known former Peshtigo business woman, died on Thursday, June 14.
Born in Peshtigo to the late Charles and Esther (Smith) Greening, she graduated from Peshtigo High School in 1943. She married Howard R. Harper on June 29, 1946 in Peshtigo and the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last year. He preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 2012.
In 1954 the couple became the owners and operators of Harper Funeral Home and Harper Furniture Mart, a firm established by Howard’s great-grandfather in 1877. The couple were partners in the family business and in every other manner. As Howard said, “I couldn’t have done it without her.”
After a successful career providing the area with quality furniture, carpeting and home additions, the couple retired in 1985.
She was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid, Carlson-Alguire-Hoaglund American Legion Auxiliary Post 312, Peshtigo Woman’s Club, Royal Neighbors of America and The Grange. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing bridge with friends, was a long-time league bowler and was a member of a golf league at Little River Country Club, hitting a hole-in-one in 1976.
Among survivors are four daughters, Linda (Tom) Sherwood of Peshtigo, Terry (Ronald) Kohlhardt of Cameron Park, Calif., Patricia Alloy of Neenah and Jackie (Dennis) Staudenmaier of Marinette; two brothers, Lawrence (Marge) Greening of Menominee and Robert (Theresa) Greening of Manitowoc.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Paul (Nancy) Sherwood, Rebecca (Tom) Jacoby, Matthew Sherwood, Sarah (Scott) Hatton, Chris (Mimi Pajo) Kohlhardt, Deborah (Luke Henne) Kohlhardt, Tony (Kacie) Alloy, Robert (Krista Schuck) Alloy and Adam (Kim) Staudenmaier, along with 12 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Sherwood, Andrew Sherwood, Margaret Jacoby, Alissa Jacoby, Henry Meinz-Sherwood, Lindsay Hatton, Madeline Hatton, Giuseppe Alloy, Gianna Alloy and Salvatore Alloy, Dominic Alloy and Addisyn Staudenmaier.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 22 at Zion Lutheran Church, Peshtigo. Rev. Luke Myslik will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Peshtigo. A memorial has been established in her name. Michael Keller, long-time Harper family friend and colleague of Howard, is serving the family.
