Marinette Legion Hosts Annual Firecracker Classic

The Marinette Legion gang will take a 6-6 record into the annual Firecracker Tournament slated for Friday, June 22 through Sunday, June 24 Pedersen Park.

The diamond classic will feature 8 teams and 16 games.

In the past week, Marinette took part in 7 games, including a 3-3 mark at the Green Bay Southwest Father’s Day tournament before concluding action with an easy 10-0 win over White Lake Tuesday. The rout was highlighted by a no-hitter from Luke Kelly, who dominated the undermanned squad with 9 strikeouts and a pair of walks during a 70 pitch effort (45 strikes).

Marinette sports a 3-0 readout to pace the North Division standings with Oconto Falls second at 3-2.

Top White Lake

It was a mismatch going into the game and lasted just 5 innings as Marinette cruised past visiting White Lake Tuesday 10-0.

The winners combined 8 hits with 7 walks, including a 3-3 performance and 4 RBIs by Austin Belonga.

Aaron Pettit and Mike Mergener slapped two hits each while Heath Rowe drove in a pair of runs.

Stealing 8 bases in the game, Marinette left 8 runners stranded and was 5-17 with runners in scoring position.

Marinette got rolling in the opening inning as Pettit and Mergener lashed singles. With runners at the corners, Mergener got caught in a rundown allowing Pettit to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead.

Rowe walked and made his way around the sacks on a stolen base and the first of 3 hits by Belonga. Free passes to Jake McMahon, Bebo and Mehlberg scored Belonga before Derek Klegin grounded out to end the inning.

Marinette was back in the scoring mode in the second frame with 2 runs on 3 hits. Pettit singled and raced home on double to gap in left center by Mergener. Belonga collected his second RBI with a single to center, scoring Mergener.

Taking a 5-0 spread into the bottom of the fifth, Marinette put the game away with 5 runs on 2 hits and an error. Bebo walked, stole second and scored when Quentin Ellie’s grounder was booted at short. Pettit (walk) and Mergener (beaned) joined Ellie on the bases, setting up a two-run single by Rowe.

Leading 8-0, Marinette ended the game as Belonga sent a hot grounder up the middle on a 3-2 pitch to score Mergener and Rowe.

Marinette starting pitcher Luke Kelly went the distance allowing 4 runs on 9 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.

Austin Belonga doubled and scored following a sac bunt by Jake McMahon and a passed ball for a 1-0 second inning lead. The margin grew to 2-0 in the fifth frame when Kelly aided his own cause with a RBI single.

Aaron Pettit slapped two hits for Marinette, while Paul Koltz, Collin Arndt and Tyler Nehring added 2 hits each for DePere.

Ross Kulick earned the win giving up one run on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts over the final 3 innings.

Giving up 9 free passes, Marinette came out on the short end of a 11-5 loss to the Green Bay Bluejays Friday. Losing pitcher Jake McMahon yielded 8 walks over 3 innings before reliever Max Hipke worked the final 4 frames.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, Marinette got even in the bottom of the frame as Aaron Pettit singled, Mike Mergener got aboard on an error, Luke Kelly singled, a passed ball, groundout by Scott Eldredge and wild pitch.

The Bluejays upped the edge to 9-3 in the fourth inning before Mergener drove in a run with a sac fly.

Singles by Eldredge and Ty Bebo got Marinette within 11-5 in the fifth.

Nick Sullivan earned the mound win allowing 3 earned runs in 7 hits with 4 walks and 9 strikeouts.

A trio of shutouts put Marinette in the consolation championship game, only to lose to Kaukauna Sunday 12-7.

Marinette’s mound gems started with a 4-0 win over Sheboygan and Menominee 9-0 Saturday, Southwest 5-0 Sunday before falling to Kaukauna.

In the win over Sheboygan, Eldredge singled in Pettit in the opening frame while Mergener and Eldredge were hit by pitches with the base full in the second. McMahon sent the final run home with a RBI single in the 5th.

Austin Belonga earned the mound win yielding 6 hits over 7 innings with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Singles by Belonga and McMahon put Marinette up 1-0 in the fourth while Klegin lashed a two-run single in the sixth. Marinette’s final two runs came in the 7th as Mergener and Eldredge ripped doubles and Bebo a RBI single.

With their pitching staff running out of arms, Marinette saw Klegin get battered for 7 earned runs on 6 hits over 3 innings before Mergener got the call for the final 4 frames in the loss to Kaukauna. The winners scored 4 runs in the third and 7 in the fourth to rally from a 7-1 deficit

Belonga blasted a run-scoring triple in the first inning and Kelly a RBI single for a 2-0 spread.
