Runner-Up Finish For Marinette

Putting together a 3-1 readout, Marinette Legion came up with a second place finish at their annual 8-team Firecracker Tournament over the weekend.

Marinette (10-7) notched wins over the Green Bay Shockers 14-4, Menominee 5-0 and Ishpeming 6-3 while falling to Marquette 6-5.

Marinette tied with the Green Bay Bluejays and Marquette for top honors with 3-1 records, but lost on the tie-breaker for least amount of runs allowed. The Bluejays were awarded first place after giving up 11 total runs, Marinette yielded 13 and Marquette 21.

Marinette Slams

Shockers 14-4

In their tournament opener Friday night, Marinette combined 14 hits with 9 walks to cruise to a lopsided 14-4 win over the Shockers.

Aaron Pettit and Scott Eldredge collected 3 hits each for the winners while Austin Belonga, Luke Kelly and Derek Klegin socked out two safeties each.

After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, Marinette erupted for 3 runs in the fourth, 5 in the fifth and 6 in the seventh to win going away.

Eldredge singled to open the fourth while a walk to Ty Bebo, error and sac fly off the bat of Pettit scored a run. Mike Mergener capped the inning with a run scoring single.

Four hits sparked the 5-run uprising in the fifth as Belonga, Eldredge and Pettit singled while Klegin launched a three-run double.

Marinette sent 12 batters to the plate in the 7th using 5 hits and 3 walks to score 6 runs. Belonga cracked a double while Pettit, Heath Rowe, Kelly and Klegin chipped in with singles.

Belonga was the winning pitcher allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts and 6 walks.

Late Rally Sinks

Marinette 6-5

Marinette’s lone loss of the weekend came in a Saturday afternoon 6-5 setback at the hands of Marquette.

Marinette took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning only to see the Blues rally for two runs and the win. Marinette owned leads of 1-0 in the second inning and 5-3 in the fifth before falling.

Trent Mehlberg sent the first run home with a single in the second inning, Klegin added a two-run double in the fourth and McMahon a two-run single in the fifth.

Trying to protect that 5-4 lead, Marinette starter Ty Bebo struggled in the seventh as Marquette manufactured a couple of runs. Spencer Larson beat out an infield single and Cody Nordquist doubled to finish Bebo for the game.

With reliever Max Hipke on the mound, Nathan Mutch got aboard on a bunt before a balk tied the score at 5-all. A suicide bunt produced the winning run.

McMahon, Marinette

Top Menominee 5-0;

Belonga Hits 2 Homers

Jake McMahon scattered 6 hits and struck out 11 batters as Marinette took round one of the M&M diamond clashes with a 5-0 win over Menominee Saturday night.

McMahon unleashed 100 pitches to earn the win, including 71 strikes. He set the side down in order in the second and fourth innings while registering a strikeout in every frame but the third.

While McMahon dominated Menominee on the mound, cleanup swinger Austin Belonga blasted two home runs and finished with 3 RBIs. Belonga launched a solo shot in the third inning then added a two-run round tripper in the fifth.

Marinette took the lead in the opening frame as Pettit ripped a double and later scored following a walk to Mike Mergener and a wild pitch.

Belonga upped the lead to 2-0 in the third with a two-out homer on a 0-1 pitch.

Marinette tacked on another run in the fourth when Bebo walked and circled the sacks on singles by Hipke and Klegin.

Belonga flexed his muscle again in the fifth with a two-run homer. Mike Mergener opened the frame with a single then jogged home as Belonga launched a round tripper to left center for that 5-0 final score.

David Beck was tagged with the loss, yielding 5 earned runs on 8 hits, 4 walks and two strikeouts.

Sean Budzynski punched out 3 of Menominee’s 6 hits.

Marinette Notches 6-3

Win To End Tourney

After giving up 2 runs on two hits in the opening inning, Luke Kelly settled down and allowed 5 hits the rest of the game in a 6-3 win over Ishpeming Sunday.

Kelly fanned 10 and walked a pair in his complete game 110-pitch performance.

Struggling to solve the “diamond junk” of Ishpeming’s Jarrett Davidson for three innings, Marinette finally got on the board in the fourth with 3 runs to go ahead. Belonga, McMahon and Hipke tallied singles while Klegin capped the uprising with a run scoring double.

Marinette extended its lead to 5-2 in the fifth on singles by Mergener and Belonga along with three errors.

In the sixth inning, Pettit got aboard on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on a bases loaded walk to Belonga.

Hipke Whiffs 13 In

Win Over Oconto

Righthander Max Hipke recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts in a 6-1 Wednesday win over visiting Oconto.

Hipke was nicked for 3 hits and two walks in his impressive mound effort. He fanned the side in the fourth and sixth frames while registering two strikeouts in the fifth and seventh innings.

The Marinette offense struggled against Oconto pitchers Kyle Krueger and Tyler Trepanier, collecting 3 hits and 7 walks.

In the second inning, McMahon and Mehlberg walked while a passed ball and groundout off the bat of Klegin plated the run.

Marinette broke the game open in the third inning, scoring 5 runs on 3 hits. Mergener and Rowe walked to open the inning before Kelly and Eldredge laced RBI singles. Mehlberg drove in two more runs with a double while Klegin chipped in with a RBI single.

Oconto’s lone run came in the fourth as Kruger and Mike Campshure hit back-to-back doubles.
