Aaron Woods, Redbirds Roll On

Aaron Woods and the Marinette Redbirds just keep on rolling. The lefthander continued his unbelievable strikeout pace by fanning 21 batters in a 4-0 win over Tri-City Sunday.

On the season, Woods has totaled 71 strikeouts in 31 innings and registered 3 straight outings of 20 whiffs or more.

“Aaron has been lights out the last 3 games and was unbelievable on Sunday. He is averaging better than two strikeouts per inning, which is unheard of. Aaron has been tough to hit because his fastball tails away from righthanders and breaking ball away from lefties. Right now, I’m glad we don’t have to face him,” Redbird coach Nick Brukardt said.

Now 8-4 overall and 5-0 in the Wishigan League, Marinette holds a game lead over second place Felch (4-1). The birds picked up a tight 5-4 non-league road win over Shawano Wednesday.

Elsewhere in Wishigan League action, Crivitz and Menominee split a pair of games. The host Storm claimed an 8-7 Wednesday win while Crivitz bounced back with a 4-0 Sunday victory behind a 14-strikeout effort from Jeff Baumann.

Felch moved into second place with an 8-5 Wednesday win over Escanaba while Gillett knocked off Kingsford.

Aaron Woods Whiffs

21 As Redbirds Roll

Past Tri-City 4-Zip

Once again Aaron Woods dominated on the mound, setting down 21 batters to key a 4-0 Redbird win over host Tri-City Sunday.

Woods recorded 21 of the game’s 27 outs via strikes, including the side in the first, fourth and sixth innings. In the 3-strikeout third frame, Woods needed just 11 pitches and 15 more in the sixth.

Marinette staked Woods to the only run he would need in the opening inning as Jordan Powers and Jordan Rasner drew walks. Following a stolen base, Powers headed home on a sac fly off the bat of Adam Francour.

The birds fluttered their wings for two more runs in the fifth on two hits. Powers worked his way on base with a walk, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Rasner. A run scoring double by Francour plated Rasner.

With two outs in the 8th inning, Cody Woods and Cully Falkenberg walked while Ryan Johnson added a RBI single.

Menominee Rallies

To Beat Crivitz 8-7

Playing twice in a span of 5-days, Crivitz and Menominee split a pair of Wishigan League outings.

In a midweek clash at Menominee Wednesday, Crivitz jumped out to a 5-1 third inning lead only to fall 8-7.

The visiting Wolves grabbed a 3-0 first inning lead as Kory Weed was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-run homer by Scott Evosevich. Jake Johnston was also beaned, moved to second on a wild pitch and raced home on a Jeff Baumann single.

In the third frame, Evosevich walked and scored on a wild pitch Later in the frame, Jake Johnston got aboard on a fielders choice and crossed the plate following an error for a 5-1 lead.

Menominee battled within 5-4 in the third inning with 3 runs, highlighted by a hit batsman (Aron Schroeder), Matt Jacobs single and two-run double by Matt Lund. A RBI single by starting pitcher Brian Bell scored Lund.

Lund opened the fifth inning with a walk and scored on a sac fly off the bat of Edlbeck for a 5-5 deadlock.

Two more Crivitz runners scored in the 7th when Weed singled, Evosevich hit a double and Jake Johnston added a two-run single for a 7-5 spread.

Menominee closed within 7-6 in the 7th as Tyler Jandrey reached on an infield single and crossed the plate on a fielders choice.

On the short end of that one run deficit heading into the bottom of the 9th, Menominee pushed across two runs against reliever Evosevich to pull out the win.

Lund singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a bunt single by Aaron Unti. Brett Edlbeck drove in Lund with a single before Unti scored the game winning run following an errant throw to put out the stealing Edlbeck at second base.

Edlbeck picked up the mound victory with 2 innings of one hit/5 strikeout ball. Starter Bell worked 7 innings allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 7 hits with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Jeff Baumann hurled 5 innings before being relieved by Evosevich, who fanned 6 over the final four frames.

Baumann Whiffs 14 In

4-0 Win Over Storm

Things were different Sunday afternoon as Baumann hurled a complete game 3-hit gem in a 4-0 win. The southpaw set down 14 Menominee batters on strikes over 9 innings and walked just one.

In a scoreless contest, Crivitz did all of its damage in the third inning on 4 hits. Evosevich and Jake Johnston singled to open the inning, while a wild pitch advanced both runners 90 feet.

Up stepped Baumann, who aided his own cause with a run scoring single. Following a walk to Max Hanson to load the bases, Kyle Johnston drove in three runs with a single to left.

Kyle Johnston and Evosevich punched out two hits each for Crivitz.

Edlbeck was tagged with the loss, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits over 7 innings with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. Cody Uecke worked the 8th inning for Menominee.

Felch Defeats

Polecats 8-5

In a Wednesday outing in Escanaba, Felch struck early and hung on for an 8-5 win.

Bill Tuck lashed 3 singles for Felch while Wade Holsworth added a 9th inning double.

Troy Rodman and Jim Barnes topped Escanaba with 3 hits each. Tony Peacock ripped a two-run double in the 8th and Josh Brodersen a RBI single.

Redbirds Tip

Shawano 5-4

In a Wednesday road outing, the Redbirds used a 4-run fourth inning to slip past Shawano 5-4.

In the early uprising, five walks, including bases loaded free passes to Chad Rasmussen and Jason Hofer along with singles by Todd Olsen and Rasner did the damage.

Marinette upped its lead to 5-1 in the fifth when winning pitcher Cody Woods singled and scored on a single by Ryan Johnson.

Cody Woods registered the mound win allowing 4 runs on 7 hits in the 7-inning affair. Woods walked a pair of batters and fanned 10, including 8 over the final 4 innings.
