Mavs Chalk Up Trio Of Wins In Weekend Games

The Mid-County Mavericks came up victorious 3 times in 4 games over the weekend, including a doubleheader sweep of the Marquette Reds Saturday. The results werent nearly as good Sunday, splitting a doubleheader with the Escanaba jayvee team, losing 2-1 before notching a 2-0 win.
In Saturdays sweep of the Reds, Ed Becerra pitched two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the mound win for Mid-County. Eddy Self drove in 3 runs, including one on a suicide squeeze bunt in the fifth inning after starting pitcher Brennen Gabriel laced a triple down the right field line.
Game two saw the Mavericks cruise to a 12-9 win. Trailing 9-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Mavs sent 12 men to the plate and scored 7 runs. Key hits in the rally came off the bats of Arzack Brown, Becerra and Dillon Meyers.
Brown earned the mound win while Becerra and Alex Starzynski drove in two runs each.
The Mavericks suffered a 2-1 first game setback to Escanaba jayvee before claiming a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
Ricky Chaney took the loss allowing 2 runs on two hits with 8 walks and 8 strikeouts. After getting hit by a pitch, Brennen Gabriel scored the lone Maverick run in the sixth on a wild pitch.
Game two saw Becerra allow just one hit in hurling a 2-0 win. Gabriel started for Mid-County with Becerra coming in following a rain delay.
Meyers walked to open the second inning and watched pinch runner Tate Koller steal second and later score on a throwing error. In the third inning, Gabriel walked and raced home on an error.
At Newberry Meet
In a six-team tournament at Newberry on July 1, the Mavericks put together a 2-1 record and came up with a second place finish. Games were scheduled on a 1 1/2 hour time limit.
In the opener, the Mavs slipped past the Soo 3-2 as Chaney fanned 10 and scattered 7 hits over 6 innings.
Dillon Meyers lashed a RBI single in the 3-run fourth inning while pinch runner Chris Kleikamp stole two bases and scored the eventual winning run.
Taking on the Gladstone jayvee team in game two, the Mavs saw Chaney go 3-4 while Koller and Meyers added two hits each in a 14-0 win. Brown picked up the mound victory finishing with 9 strikeouts and allowing 4 hits.
The championship game saw the Mavs fall to Ishpeming 3-1, despite a 10 strikeout and one hit pitching effort from Becerra.
The only run for the Mavericks came in the fourth as Eddy Self walked to start the inning and headed home on singles by Becerra and Starzynski.
