Joseph E. Magnuson Better known as Tamarack Joe, born February 13, 1919, Cook, Minnesota to parents Oscar and Hilma (Peterson) Magnuson; born to eternal life July 5, 2012, at the age of 93; resided at Whispering Oaks Care Center in Peshtigo. As a boy Joe loved skiing in the hills of MN. He left his home in Cook to enter the Army at the age of 23. Joe was a WWII veteran, having served our country from October 6, 1942, to September 23, 1945. While in the army, he fulfilled his patriotic duty in the European-Asiatic Theater as an anti-aircraft artillery gun crewman.
After the War he moved to Elgin, Illinois, where he worked in the Streets and Sanitation Department. Prior to his retirement, he settled in Wausaukee and worked in the woods and in saw mills, retiring in 1982 from Mueller's Saw Mill.
Surviving are his nieces and nephews: Pat (Gene) Sebero, Porterfield, Gloria (Steve) Kafka, Wausaukee, Laura Vertz (John Frendreis) Skokie, Illinois, George (Karen) Vertz, Wausaukee, Vern (Julie) Vertz, Wausaukee, David (Barb) Vertz, Crivitz, Stanley (Bev) Vertz of Shawano, cousin Bonnie (Sam) Pajaei of Cook, Minnesota, Merry Beth (Jay) Bengry of Negaunee, MI.,Sharon (Harold) Prewhella of Palmer, MI., 23 grandnieces and nephews, and numerous great-grand nieces and nephews.
Preceding in death are two sisters Margaret Vertz and Ida Magnuson, his parents, nephews Ronald and William Elmer Vertz, and brother-in-law Elmer Vertz.
Messar Funeral Home will hold his visitation Friday, July 20th from 4pm to 6pm. A Memorial Service will be held at 6 pm at the funeral home with full military honors provided by the Polomis-Tahlier American Legion Post #150 of Wausaukee. A full military burial service will be 9am on Monday, July 23 at Cook, Minnesota.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Joe’s name, to VFW Post 1752, Cook, MN or Polomis-Tahlier American Legion Post #150, Wausaukee, WI.
