Successful Week For Marinette Legion

Looking to take some momentum into the post-season, the Marinette Legion team notched a trio of wins this past week to push its diamond readout to 17-12.

Coach Brian Lesandrini’s troops needed extra innings to turn back Menominee 5-4 on Thursday in 9 innings and Kewaunee County 13-12 in 10-innings Sunday.

Hosting Northern Door on Monday, Marinette gave the ball to Jake McMahon, who fashioned a 5-hitter in a 7-0 win.

The legion team has 4 more games left in the regular season...Thursday at Oconto (5:30pm), Saturday hosting the Green Bay Shockers at 7pm before traveling to Appleton for a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday against Appleton.

Action in the “AAA” tourney is slated for July 26-29 at Ash-Port.

Marinette Rallies To

Sweep M&M Series

Overcoming a flat start and an early 3-0 deficit, Marinette completed the season sweep of 4 games against Menominee with a 5-4, 9-inning win Thursday night.

Host Menominee took advantage of some wildness by Marinette hurler Ty Bebo to score twice in the opening frame. Zach Budzynski opened the game with a double off the left field fence and slowly moved to third base following a pair of walks. With the bases loaded and no outs, Budzynski scored on a wild pitch while a groundout by Derek Reiswitz plated another run.

Jake Mathieu got aboard on a fielder’s choice and scored following the third wild pitch thrown by Bebo in the second frame.

Marinette finally got to Menominee starter Sean Budzynski for a run in the fourth. Mike Mergener singled and came around on a RBI single to left off the bat of Austin Belonga.

Marinette got even at 3-all in the fifth as Belonga reached on an error, Luke Kelly singled and both runners crossed the plate on another error.

In the top of the seventh, Marinette used one hit to take its first lead at 4-3. Mergener, Belonga and Mehlberg were hit by pitches while Kelly lined a run scoring single.

Marinette couldn’t hold the lead as Menominee scored in the bottom of the frame for a 4-4 contest. Ryan Woods opened the inning with a single to right, moved to second on a wild pitch before racing home on a clutch single by Landen Maccoux to centerfield.

Following a scoreless 8th inning, Marinette put together its winning rally. Belonga walked to start things and advanced to second on a bunt by Kelly. Mehlberg lined a hit to centerfield, putting runners at second and third. Jake McMahon blooped a single to left to send Belonga home.

Menominee almost tied things up in its half of the 9th as Sam Schewe drew a leadoff walk, but was erased at second base following an attempted bunt. Marinette reliever Max Hipke used a pair of strikeouts to close out the game and collect the save.

Bebo worked 8 innings and allowed 4 runs on 9 hits with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts to earn the win.

Sean Budzynski gave up 6 hits over 8 innings with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Reliever Riley Hegg suffered the loss giving up one hit and one run.

Marinette Outlasts

Kewaunee County

In 10 innings, 13-12

In a marathon game Sunday afternoon, Marinette notched a 10 inning, 13-12 win over visiting Kewaunee County.

In preparation for the upcoming tournament, the game was originally scheduled for 9 innings, but ended going 10 frames as the teams combined for 30 hits, 25 runs and 19 walks.

Marinette owned leads of 6-1 in the first inning, 7-3 in the fourth and 12-5 after 6 frames. Six fielding errors enabled Kewaunee County to get back into the game down the stretch.

Marinette’s offense was in high gear at the start, scoring 6 runs in the first inning on 3 hits. Austin Belonga, who went 4-5 and scored twice, doubled while Mike Mergener and Trent Mehlberg added singles.

Scott Eldredge walked to open the fourth then moved around the bases on consecutive singles by Belonga, starting pitcher Luke Kelly and Mehlberg.

Belonga belted a solo homer in the sixth while 3 walks, a hit batsman, double by Mergener and single off the bat of Derek Klegin upped Marinette’s lead to 12-5.

Kewaunee scored 7 runs from the 7th to the 9th frames to force extra innings. The game tying rally was highlighted by a sac fly from Taylor Kirchman, error and a single off the bat of Trevor Kinnard.

Putting together a winning rally in the 10th, Marinette saw Jake McMahon and Max Hipke draw one-out walks. After Heath Rowe popped up, Aaron Pettit ended the game with a single to centerfield.

Hipke, the third Marinette hurler, earned the mound win giving up one run on two hits over 2 innings. Kelly was roughed up for 5 runs on 8 hits over 6 innings while Mergener didn’t do much better with 6 runs on 5 hits in 2 innings of relief work.

Belonga swung the big bat with two singles, double and homer while Mergener chipped in with a pair of singles and a double.

McMahon Fans 9 In

7-0 Win Over Chiefs

Traveling to Marinette for the second part of a Monday doubleheader, Northern Door ran into righthander Jake McMahon and suffered a 7-0 loss.

McMahon was razor sharp in the early week mound win, fanning 9, allowing 5 hits and no walks during a 97 pitch performance (72 strikes).

At the plate, Hipke and McMahon lashed two hits each while Belonga drilled a fifth inning, two-run homer for a 6-0 lead.

Marinette tallied 3 runs in the second frame on just one hit and a pair of Northern Door errors. Hipke singled to start the frame then was joined on the basepaths by Derek Klegin (walk), McMahon (fielders choice) and Bebo (walk).

Hipke crossed the plate on a throwing error, Klegin wild pitch and McMahon on a grounder to first base by Heath Rowe.

Three more Marinette runs were registered in the fifth. Pettit got aboard on an error and scored when Eldredge saw his grounder to third get booted. Belonga took care of the final two runs with a home run to centerfield.

McMahon doubled to open the sixth and scored Marinette’s final run on a single by Rowe.
