Lena School Tables District Land Sale

Several months ago the Lena School District was informed that it still owed about half an acre of land west of town on CTH A that once was part of the location of a former country school house. The land bordered only two property owners so the district decided to ask these property owners to submit bids for disposition of the property.

The Monday, July 16 meeting of the board, the bids on this piece of property were opened, but faced with another legal angle brought up at the meeting on the disposition of the property, the board decided to table any decision on the bids until legal counsel could be consulted on behalf of the district.

The board was, however, able to reach conclusion on several other bids and contracts at the meeting. The bid for fuel was awarded to Lena FastStop. The district buses customarily use between 6000 and 8000 gallons of fuel per year. Lamars Bus Lines serves the district and expressed a preference for the FastStop based on ease of access and on FastStop’s capacity to blend the diesel mixture in the winter.

The bids on the yearly milk and bread contract were tabled because a typo was discovered on the dates of the bid. Rebidding will commence for the contracts.

Coaching contracts were approved for Justin Daul for Varsity Girls Basketball, Amber Whiting, Cheerleading, Kyle Kaellis as Junior High Wrestling coach, Anita Umentum for Varsity Volleyball, Ed Huberty, Varsity Head Football, and Becky Huberty, a volunteer Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach. It was previously incorrectly reported regarding the coaching position of John Whiting. He was named Junior High Girls Basketball Coach.

A contract for Drivers Education Services through CESA 8 for $7532 was approved. John Knickerbocker is the teacher for both the summer classroom portion and the Behind-the-Wheel portion throughout the year.

After reviewing 38 Kindergarten teacher applications and interviewing six, the board hired Dawn Otto. Her duties begin with the rest of summer school this year. Otto is an experienced, licensed teacher and calls the Anderson Lake area her home.

The board decided that no increase in lunch prices was warranted for the next school year. A study revealed that the District remains in the middle when compared to other area districts. The board did, however, approve a 5 cent increase for additional cartons of milk, set at 30 centers per carton.

Student Assurance Service, Inc. was chosen as the supplier of the supplemental accident insurance for the district. The cost is approximately $4.50 per student, based on enrollment totals, and covers all school and sport related medical claims after the parental insurance company has been billed. The cost to the district is $7270, but has proven invaluable and beneficial to Lena families who have used it.

A contract with the CESA 7 Newist Organization was approved. Newist supplies media services for teachers, coordinating media content for classroom use. The cost per year is $432.

Elementary Principal Carla Spice reported that an agreement has been reached with NEWCAP, through a grant, to provide Backpacks of health food snacks for free/reduced meal participants in the Elementary School. The program will provide a weekend backpack of health food for families who qualify. The backpacks will be sent home on Thursdays or Fridays.

Spice also announced that the district was the recent recipient of two gas cards from CESA because of their high rate of return of a recent CESA survey. The district returned 85% of the surveys. The previous high percentage was between 35 and 40%.

With summer school ending, Spice informed the board there has been a rescheduling of one of the swimming classes that had to be missed because of problems at the pool. The rest of Summer School ends this week and the additional swimming class will take place next week.

Administrator David Honish reported on the continuing meetings taking place with the auditor as the fiscal year draws to a close. It appears that the district is on-track with this year’s budget.

Honish added that he has applied for a grant through the Shopko Foundation in conjunction with a Student Activities Fund project to install a couple of TVs in the school lunch room. If granted, the money could enhance the project.

Under discussion items, Honish presented a Wellness Plan for District Staff that is being offered by the district’s health insurance carrier (WEA). The Wellness Plan provides incentives for participation. The board suggested further pursuit of the plan.

Before going into closed session to discuss the Administrator Evaluation, the board toured the ongoing renovation projects taking place in the Elementary building.
