Redbirds Host Gillett In Key Wishigan Clash
In a key Wishigan League battle Wednesday, the league leading Marinette Redbirds will put their perfect mark on the line hosting third place Gillett.
Winners of 5 of their last 6 games, the Firecats come into the outing with a 5-4 record and sit 3 1/2 games behind the Redbirds.
In league contests played on the field, Gillett rode a brilliant 4-hitter by Luke Yogurst to a 5-0 win over visiting Crivitz while Zak Uren chalked up 19 strikeouts to send Tri-City past Felch 8-4.
Things are little different off the field, where winless Kingsford has decided to forfeit the remainder of the schedule due to a lack of players. As a result, each team will be credited with a victory for a scheduled game against Kingsford.
The forfeit improves the Redbirds to 8-0 in league play and 12-5 for the season. Marinette owns a 2 game edge over second place Felch (7-3) with Gillett third and Tri-City in fourth place.
Redbirds Rout Visiting
Shawano In 12-1 Win
It was like deja vu all over again as the Redbirds continued their diamond dominance with a 12-1 non-league win over Shawano Wednesday. The birds combined 8 hits with 8 walks and 2 hit batsmen to back another mound gem from righthander Cody Woods.
After tossing a 3-hitter against Crivitz a week ago, Woods was even better Wednesday allowing one hit in the 5-inning win. The hard throwing Woods recorded 12 of the 15 outs on strikes, walked one and gave up a first inning single to Mike Hillberg.
It is hard to believe, but Shawano claimed a 1-0 first inning lead when leadoff hitter Pete Carroll got aboard on an error on shortstop Ryan Johnson and later scored on Hillbergs hit.
That was all the offense Shawano could generate against Woods and company. He fanned the side in the second and fourth innings while collecting a pair of strikeouts in the other three frames.
The birds fluttered their scoring wings in the second inning as 4 straight batters reached base. Jordan Rasner slapped a leadoff single then watched Aaron and Cody Woods along with Nick Brukardt collect free passes for a 1-1 deadlock. Johnson snapped the tie with a sac fly to left.
Marinette added 3 more runs in the third as Jason Hofer walked, Adam Francour was beaned, Rasner added a sac bunt and Aaron Woods a two-run single. Woods scampered home on a wild pitch for a 5-1 spread.
Jordan Powers, Francour and Aaron Woods cracked singles in the fourth inning as the lead grew to 7-1.
Marinette won via the run rule in the fifth, scoring 5 times on 3 hits. Cody Woods walked to open the inning and Brukardt ripped a single. After Johnson popped up, Powers singled, pinch hitter Mitch Kushava was beaned and Hofer drew a free pass. Francour capped the inning with a run scoring double.
Southpaw Chase Quinney, the first of 3 hurlers for Shawano, took the loss giving up 2 runs on one hit in one inning of work. Pete Carroll added 3 1/3 innings of relief help before Mike Maedke yielded 2 runs on one hit in the fifth.
Powers lashed 2 hits, scored twice and stole a pair of bases, Francour 2 hits and 2 runs while Aaron Woods chipped in with 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI.
Clip Crivitz 5-0
The pitching of Luke Yogurst proved to be too tough for Crivitz as Gillett notched a 5-0 Wishigan win Sunday. Yogurst allowed just 4 hits and fanned 6 during a complete game 9-inning win.
Les Hilberg topped the winners with a double, 2 runs and a pair of RBIs, Mitch Champagne added two hits and a RBI, Alex Ziesmer and Blair Hicks one hit each.
Gillett grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Hilberg got aboard on a fielders choice and later scored on Tyler Woodkes groundout.
A three-run fifth inning put Yogurst and Gillett in control 4-0. Jared Henne and Jordan Hooper walked before Hilberg unloaded a two-run double. Champagne sent Hilberg home with a single.
The final Gillett run came in the 8th as Champagne singled and raced home on a two-base throwing error.
Jeff Baumann absorbed the loss giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits with 9 strikeouts and a walk.
Cody Wolf punched out two hits for Crivitz while Jake Johnston and Max Hanson added singles.
Uren Registers 19 Ks
In 8-4 Tri-City Victory
Righthander Zak Uren threw his strikeout pitch past 19 batters Wednesday as Tri-City topped visiting Felch 8-4. Uren was nicked for 6 hits, no walks and fanned the side 4 times to claim the 7-inning mound win.
Thanks to a pair of home runs by starting pitcher JJ Fende, Felch took a 3-1 lead into the third inning when the Northstars struck for 3 runs.
James Larsen ripped a run scoring double and Marcus Garner belted a two-run homer to key the rally.
A two-run double by Tyler Nault in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a RBI single from Tyler Desjardin, gave Tri-City the win.
Mike Miller took the loss in relief of Fende, who lashed 3 of the six Felch hits.
