THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Peshtigo Is Winless At "A" Classic
Issue Date: August 1, 2012
A pair of setbacks to open the A regional finished the Peshtigo Legion gang with an 8-12 season mark.
Peshtigo lost to Fond du Lac 6-1 in the opener before suffering a heartbreaking 4-3, 11-inning setback at the hands of Bonduel.
The kids really played well at the regional and the extra inning loss was a tough way to end the season. We had a fun year and really enjoyed the team, coach Geoff Sparks said.
Homers Burn Peshtigo
In Tourney Opener 6-1
A pair of home runs by Jacob Schneider was more than Peshtigo could handle, falling 6-1 to Fond du Lac in the tournament opener Wednesday.
The number three swinger for Fondy, Schneider belted a two-run blast in the third inning then added a three-run shot in the fifth to break the game open.
Peshtigo managed just 5 hits in the game...singles by Brandon Barrette, Tyler Marquardt, Cody Nielson and Tom Quigley along with a double off the bat of Joey Sparks.
Fondy broke a scoreless affair with 3 runs in the third inning. Collin Ottery and Evan Henderson lashed singles while Schneider launched a two-run homer.
Peshtigo tried to answer in the fourth as Joey Sparks lined a leadoff double to left center and raced home on Marquardts single. A strikeout by DJ Koronkiewicz and groundouts from Trevor Bero and losing pitcher Adam Thill ended the threat.
Peshtigo put two runners on base in the fifth inning, but didnt score. Nielson walked to open the frame only to get forced out at second base on a Nick Sparks fielders choice. Quigley whiffed for the second out, Barrette singled before Joey Sparks went down looking.
Thill served up another long ball to Schneider in the fifth following a fielders choice and single for a 6-1 spread.
Nielson lashed a one-out single in the 7th inning before a fly ball by Nick Sparks and strikeout of James Brabant ended the game.
Thill was roughed up for 6 runs on 7 hits over 4 1/3 innings with Matt Borkovec adding 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Season Ends In 4-3
Loss To Bonduel
Peshtigo owned leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before dropping an 11-inning, 4-3 contest to Bonduel.
The local gang had plenty of scoring chances, stranding a dozen runners, including the bases loaded in the first and 8th innings.
That was a tough loss. Brandon and Joey pitched extremely well, but we couldnt come up with the key hit. The kids played well and we had our chances throughout the game, coach Sparks said.
The home team in the post-season affair, Peshtigo pushed across a run in the opening inning. Joey Sparks singled with one away, but was thrown out trying to steal second base. Marquardt followed with a walk and scored on a single by DJ Koronkiewicz.
Bonduel tied the score at 1-1 in the second as Dakota Knueppel singled and scored on a single by Jake Luepke and fly ball.
Peshtigo regained the upper hand in the third without the benefit of a hit. Marquardt reached when his fly ball to left was misplayed and later scored on a groundout.
Bonduel tacked on solo runs in the fifth and 7th innings to go up 3-2.
Down to the final three outs, Peshtigo rallied to force extra innings. Barrette worked his way for a walk, stole second and scored on a groundout by Joey Sparks and walk to Marquardt.
Peshtigo threatened again in the 8th, but came up empty. Thill coaxed a leadoff walk only to get erased at first. Nielson and Nick Sparks walked before fielders choice grounders by Quigley and Barrette forced runners out. Bonduel escaped further damage when Joey Sparks went down swinging.
Bonduel pushed across the game winner in the 11th inning when Cullin Kowalczyk scored on a fielders choice.
Peshtigo went down in order in the 10th and 11th frames.
Barrette gave up 3 runs over 8 innings before being relieved by Joey Sparks for the final three frames. The pair fanned 10 and walked 9.
