Over 100 Menekauneeans gathered for their 34th annual Menekaunee Old Timers Picnic held on Saturday, July 28 at Red Arrow Park for anyone age 50 and older with ties to Menekaunee.
As people arrived they received a name tag from the registration ladies Barb (VanHemelryk) Scheffen, Vicki (Malmstadt) Guay, and Marilyn Knopp. All paid attendees were eligible to win a door prize, and all attendees were eligible to participate in the raffle drawings. Menekaunee cheerleaders Sandy (Olson) Saunier, Jean (Fischer) Rizzo, Karen (Christopherson) Esch, Carolyn “Mikki” (Olson) Jensen, Sharon (Brix) Powilaites, Judy (Brix) Williams, and Judy (Fischer) Uecke kicked off the event, followed by a welcome by co-chairman Sandy Saunier. Retired Mayor Bob Harbick gave the prayer for deceased members and also presented the dinner invocation, reiterating his fondness for Menekaunee.
Co-chairman Sharon Powilaites had the food catered by Angeli’s. The menu included fried chicken, meatballs, potato salad, coleslaw, green beans, Sandy’s famous brown beans, mixed fresh fruit, buns and relishes, with assorted cookies for dessert. Coffee and bottled water were available. Kitchen help was provided by Judy Williams, Holly Brix, Jean Rizzo, and Harry Wartinbee. John Powilaites brought leftover food to the Rainbow House Domestic Abuse Shelter.
After dinner, the oldest man, Bill Walker, 90, and the oldest women, Pearl Fort, 89 and Joyce Grun, 85, were recognized with boutonnieres and a City of Marinette coffee mug. Mugs were also given to Fred and Jenice Litts who traveled the farthest distance from Albuquerque, NM.
Powilaites introduced Dennis Trygvie “Tryg” Jensen of Green Bay who was available to autograph and sell the two books he wrote on commercial fishing, “Wooden Boats and Iron Men” and “Through Waves and Gales Come Fishermen’s Tales.” He donated one of his books for the raffle. Menekaunee promotional materials of t-shirts, polo shirts, caps, from Joe Shepro of Bayside Embroidery in Menominee were sold to keep the cost of the picnic down for next year. A display table included financial reports, newspaper write-ups, and photos of Menekaunee and Red Arrow Park. Powilaites created the postcards for out-of-towners who do not have email. Karen (Thornton) Bookter helped with name tags. Saunier conducted the door prize and raffle drawings, assisted by Jean Rizzo. Setup and take-down of tables and chairs was handled by Ken Collard, John Powilaites, and Myril Jr. “Butch” Brix.
Every year the event is different and special and is used by some as a family gathering. This year, Bud and Angie Zeisberger came from Waukesha to meet for the first time their Brix cousins through their great-grandfather, Engelbert Brix. The Enstrom and Litts families also gathered with out-of-town relatives who came “home” for the event.
Next year’s picnic is July 27.
