THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Tales from the old-timer
Mark Twain wrote a book called Roughing It about his experiences out west after the Civil War. He was in a town where nearly everybody wore a holstered pistol at the hip, and 10 or 12 shooting incidents every couple of weeks was the norm. So long as a victim got a fair draw, no warrant was issued, as duels were commonplace, and usually happened out in the open street, with witnesses to testify that the dead guy had a fair draw, and the sheriff had no involvement once that was established. Boot Hill Cemetery was full of tombstones for the fallen. Twain himself did not pack a gun, as he was a news reporter and avoided conflicts.
I have nothing against guns, and have a couple of .22 rifles and a couple of shotguns in my house. When I was a social worker sometimes involved with crossing paths with some pretty tough characters, I was checking out a child abuse referral, and the principal of the Amberg School denied my request to talk to the 8 year old boy allegedly abused by his dad, and after I left, the principal called the boys father and told him I had been at the school snooping around. Our department had legal custody of the boy because of serious problems the Court was aware of because of incidents during the parents divorce. The father then phoned the Social Service Department and told our Director that he would blow my head off if I came to his house. I had my shotgun under the bed for a couple of weeks after that, because the father knew where I lived. All he needed was a telephone book. The errant father then fled to the Michigan UP with his kids, and eventually ended up in prison for a different reason. He had already killed one man and done time in prison for it.
My point is this, in view of the recent spate of multiple killings, with shooters showing early signs of mental problems, Why is no sort of regulation involved? You need a license to drive a car or even a scooter. Does anyone need to have an assault rifle among his extensive collection of firearms? To hunt rabbits? Why are assault weapons not banned for private ownership? These gunsels accumulate large collections of such weapons, and no sort of licensing is required. The 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is always cited as reason for the right, to bear arms, but it was referring to militia being a requirement for national defense of the nation as a whole. I cant buy a 105 mm howitzer to keep in my shed!
There is a tendency all over the United States to settle matters with a gun. Witness the recent shooting in Wausaukee! The National Rifle Associations cure is that every public place should have an armed guard posted, or everyone should carry a handgun, at the very least.

Wisconsin lawmakers passed a bill with a 76-22 vote that would increase the maximum speed limit to 70 mph in approved areas. Do you agree that the speed limit should be increased?
