Coleman Netters Stand Alone Thanks to a pair of wins over Suring and Crivitz, the Coleman Cougars sit atop the M-O net standings with a 4-0 readout. Coleman held off pesky Suring in 5 games Thursday before registering a sweep over Crivitz Tuesday.
Three teams share the runner-up spot as Lena, Niagara and Peshtigo sport 3-1 readouts. Wausaukee evened off its volleyball mark at 2-2 with a sweep over Crivitz and STAA.
League play continues Thursday, September 6 with triangulars at Crivitz, Suring and Coleman while dual meets are slated for Tuesday, Sept. 11.
Wausaukees Strengths
Key Sweep Of Crivitz Crivitz was competitive for most of its match against M&O rival Wausaukee Thursday in conference net action.
But unfortunately for the Wolverines, the home team was apparently wasting no time letting opponents know that lack of size wont be keeping them from competing this season as the Rangers sent Crivitz home by way of a 25-21, 25-17, 25-15 sweep.
Were very small this year, says Wausaukee head coach Tom Pleyte. But were coming along. Well just try to take advantage of whatever we can. Keep the ball alive, keep hitting and try to make it so were doing the hitting as opposed to the other team doing the hitting at us.
After a close first game that saw the two teams separated by only four points when the dust settled, the second game was another back and forth struggle midway through as well with Wausaukee holding a slim 12-11 advantage. After the Rangers went up 16-11, the Wolverines put together a string of nice points to get to within two at 19-17.
Then cropped up a phenomenon that would prove to be the undoing of the Crivitz team as they all but handed the opposition seven straight points to close the game out, five of the seven coming by way of unforced errors.
The Rangers hit their stride in the third game as they began to run the Wolverines all over the court. They were serving the ball with velocity as well as accuracy and forcing Crivitz into more frustrating mishits and ill-placed shots.
A 6-1 Rangers lead didnt need long to turn into a 12-3 advantage as the visiting team looked to be overwhelmed by the fast-moving Wausaukee squad. Their shots sailed long and their players struggled to get into position to return strikes.
But the Wolverines clawed their way back into the third frame. As if a switch had been thrown, Crivitz responded and cut the Rangers lead to four at 12-8, largely thanks to powerful serves from Kelsey Fickler, who finished Thursday with two aces, and heads up play from Star Batten, who also had a pair of service aces to go along with nine total kills. Jen Kempka chipped in three digs and 15 assists.
The Rangers were just too much though. Crivitz got as close as 13-11 but the home team quickly regrouped, thanks to heavy hitting at the net from the likes of Sara Wickman, four aces and 15 kills, and Stevie Oldenburg, who finished with 12 kills and an assist. Wausaukee corrected its early-game miscues and jumped back out to a 17-13 advantage before overpowering Crivitz with more error-inducing shots and closing it out with a healthy 10-point margin at 25-15.
Im pleased because were getting a lot of mileage out of what is not a real big team, said Pleyte. I would imagine that the difference for us in tonights match was our experience. We were a little better at keeping the ball alive than they were tonight.
Also contributing for Wausaukee were Kaylor Delaet with four kills and an ace to go along with her match-leading 18 assists and Crysta Clark with two kills, three assists and an ace.
Bulldogs Firing On
All Cylinders In
Sweep Of Niagara
Peshtigo got 100% serving efforts from three of its players in a convincing three-game sweep over host Niagara 25-16, 25-20, 25-19.
Our serving was much better tonight, says Peshtigo head coach Lynn Kostreva. We wanted Niagara to earn their points and not much got past us.
Taylor Romenesko found fair territory on all 15 of her serves while notching four aces to go along with 10 kills and 10 digs. Shannen Ganter had a pair of aces on 10-for-10 serving as well as 12 kills and nice digs. Hannah Romenesko was 17-for-17 at the service line with an ace in addition to her six kills and 18 digs.
Leading the way for Niagara were Kaitlyn Lundin with 12 kills, Abbey Bagnieschi 11 assists as well as a dig and a kill and Maryellen Wagener 10 kills.
Im very pleased with how we played, Kostreva said. Our transition was great, they covered the floor really well. Also, our communication keeps getting better and better.

After dispatching the visiting Cavalettes convincingly in the first game of Thursday's match 25-13, the Lena Wildcats stuttered a bit for a narrow 25-23 win in the second before returning to form and closing things out in the third on a 25-14 effort.

Peshtigo Hands Lena
First Volleyball Loss
Protecting their homecourt, the Bulldogs never gave Lena a chance in registering a 25-16, 25-11 and 25-10 sweep to improve to 3-1.
We continue to improve in our transition game. The girls showed a lot of effort and hustle in digging up the shanked balls to get it over on that third hit, coach Lynn Kostreva said. We continue to show improvements in all areas.
