Coleman Netters Extend Lead

Sparked by wins over Peshtigo and Gillett, the unbeaten Coleman Cougars now own a 9-0 readout and enjoy a two game lead in the M-O Conference.

Coleman overcame a first game loss to turn back Peshtigo Thursday then duplicated that feat against Gillett Tuesday.

The second place Bulldogs (7-2) bounced back with a four game win over Suring while Wausaukee moved into third place by nudging Niagara.

Conference triangulars will take place on Thursday, highlighted by Coleman heading to Gillett along with Lena. Peshtigo will entertain Crivitz and Niagara while STAA and Suring travel to Wausaukee.

Triangular action begins at 5pm.

Cougars Stumble In First

Game, Bounce Back To

Beat Bulldogs In Four

Coleman stumbled getting out of the gate against Peshtigo Thursday but regrouped to take the match in four games 25-15, 15-25, 21-25, 20-25.

In a contest featuring two of the M&O’s top squads, it was Peshtigo taking control early as the home team jumped out to a 18-8 advantage before closing out the opening game with a convincing 25-15 win.

But the Cougars, led by the dominant front court presence of Makenzie Sadowski, got it going in the second game as they flip-flopped the opener’s result with a 25-15 win of their own to level things at a game apiece.

“It was a total team effort,” said Coleman head coach Caitlin Dowden of her team’s second win against Peshtigo this season. “That was going to have to be the case against a good Peshtigo team. We knew it was going to be a battle and the girls did a fabulous job of stepping up to the challenge and taking care of business.”

The Cougars were led on the evening by Sadowski’s 13 kills and six blocks; Heather Zeitler had 10 kills; Raena Chucka notched six aces; Abby Bieber 12 digs and Sammy Schaal 17 assists.

For the Bulldogs, Nicole Motkowski had 14 digs to go along with 11 assists and three kills while Hannah Romenesko got 20 digs, two assists and six kills; Shannen Ganter 20 digs and nine kills; Allie Morris 15 assists and 11 digs; Taylor Romenesko 13 digs, four blocks and five kills.

“Coleman is a very scrappy team,” said Peshtigo head coach Lynn Kostreva. “ Not much got past them, they dug up almost everything we sent over. Despite the loss, the girls never gave up. We were ready to play, we just didn’t have enough to beat them.”

“Each player did an outstanding job of shaking off the mistakes and pressing forward, winning the momentum of the match,” Dowden said of her group’s overall performance against Peshtigo. “The team has done a great job of impressing me thus far and we are hoping to continue that as we head into the heart of the season.”

Rangers Prevail In

Five Game Match

Both the Wausaukee and Crivitz volleyball teams have seen their fair share of five-game matches in recent weeks and Thursday’s contest in Wausaukee was no different as the two teams went back and forth before the Rangers won 16-25, 25-13, 15-25, 25-19, 15-9.

Leading the way for Wausaukee was Kaylor DeLaet's 27 assists to go along with two blocks; Sara Wickman 13 kills and a block as well as three aces; Lauren Edlbeck was the match’s top kill earner with 14, plus an ace; Stevie Oldenburg four kills, two blocks and an assist while Charleen Fick added three kills, two blocks and two assists.

Niagara continues to be a factor in M&O play as the Badgers overcame a second game setback against Lena to improve to 5-2 in conference with a 25-12, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15 victory.

Niagara was led by an impressive effort from Maryellen Wagner with 24 kills, seven blocks two digs and three assists; Danielle Bennett 19 assists and two digs; Abbey Bagnieschi 20 assists and three kills; Shanna Nordell helped keep things lively up front with 14 kills to go along with a pair of digs and Shelby Borchardt two kills, a block and 12 digs.
