Bulldogs Overcome Sluggish Start To Clobber Crivitz 35-7 Thanks to another dominating defensive performance, the Peshtigo Bulldogs (4-0, 3-0) overcame a sluggish start to clobber host Crivitz 35-7 Friday night.
After an rash of fumbles and penalties, Peshtigo found itself on the wrong end of a 7-0 first quarter deficit when noseguard Kolt Collier scooped up a fumble and rambled 56 yards for the only Crivitz score.
Peshtigo faced that deficit until two minutes remained in the half, before tallying three scores over the final two frames to win going away.
“Obviously, we did not have the same emotional intensity as we did against Coleman. The lack of concentration demonstrated itself early with fumbling the ball along with holding and procedure penalties. I’m sure it was a mental letdown after the Coleman win, but give Crivitz credit, they came out ready to play and were fired up,” Peshtigo coach Sam Komp said.
Komp and company know they have one side of the ball to thank for the win....the defense.
Given the task of trying to stop the conference’s leading rusher Ben Fischer, the Bulldog “hit men” came through with flying colors and allowed Crivitz just 84 total yards. Even more impressive was that Peshtigo limited Fischer, who had been averaging around 250 yards per game, just 47 yards in 12 rushes before heading to the sidelines in the third quarter.
“I’m very pleased with the defense...going into the game they had a goal of trying to limit Fischer’s yardage and did. Fischer is a nice runner, big and strong, but our guys knew they had to gang tackle him to be successful. Fischer finished with 47 yards, 20 of those coming on one run,” Komp added.
While the Bulldogs did a number stopping Fischer, Crivitz couldn’t contain Derrik Maye. The Bulldog back battered the Wolverine defense for 198 yards on 30 carries and 5 touchdowns. Maye found the comforts of the end zone on scampers of 7, 6, 23, 26 and 10 yards.
With linebacker James Brabant recovering a fumble on the opening Crivitz drive, Peshtigo struggled moving the ball. Two runs by Maye left Peshtigo a yard short of a first down. With confidence in his line, Komp called for a quarterback sneak by Dakota Keller. The play worked fine, but Keller lost control of the ball with Collier recovering and racing 56 yards in the other direction. Joe Rodriquez booted the extra point as Crivitz held a 7-0 edge at the 8:46 mark.
Drive number two was better, but still ran into some fumbling issues and penalties.
Starting at their own 32, the Bulldogs marched 68 yards in 8 plays before Maye scooted in from 7 yards out. A 21 yard Keller to Levi Sanborn pass put the Bulldogs at the Crivitz 19. Maye gained 5 yards on first down, fullback Brabant 7 on second before Maye scored. The PAT by Jake Jagielski missed the mark for a 7-6 score.
After a period of inept play which featured an exchange of fumbles, 3 Peshtigo punts and 4 by Crivitz, along with a number of dropped passes, the Bulldogs finally got things straightened out on offense.
Peshtigo linebacker Gunner Kinney pounced on a fumble by Fischer at the Crivitz 45. Four runs produced 4 straight first downs and a score. Maye ripped off a pair of 11 yard scampers, Sanborn busted loose on a 17 yard run to the 6, before the ball went back to Maye for the score and the lead. Maye also tacked on the conversion run for a 14-7 edge with 2:00 left in the half.
“From about the middle of the second quarter on, we started to pick it up and our offensive and defensive lines dominated,” Komp remarked.
After a halftime chat with the coaching staff, Peshtigo built on that 14-7 halftime edge with a pair of third quarter scores to widen the gap.
Getting the ball to open the second half, the Bulldogs needed 7 plays to march 70 yards in less then 4 minutes to the end zone. Maye carried 5 times for 39 yards and capped the drive with a 23 yard jaunt. Jagielski split the uprights for a 21-7 lead (8:04).
Peshtigo returned to the end zone on its next possession, a 45 yard march in 7 plays for a 27-7 lead. The Bulldogs played ball control with short runs, before Maye busted loose for 26 yards and the score at the 2:20 mark.
The fifth and final Bulldog score came with 7:09 remaining and covered 50 yards. Sanborn tore off a 26 yard run before Maye made his way to the end zone from 10 yards out. Jake Veness tacked on the conversion points for that 35-7 final score.
The Bulldogs will be eying their 4th straight M-O win Saturday afternoon in a homecoming clash against Wausaukee at 1pm.
“This is always a tough week with the homecoming festivities going on. Wausaukee presents a lot of difficulty and will spread you out all over the field. With DeLaet, Lewandowski and Nystrom, Wausaukee has 3 mature skilled athletes that we will have to contend with,” Komp concluded.
