Maroons Dominate Rematch On the defensive side of the ball, Ryan Wortner had 7 solo tackles and 2 assists, Hoheneder 8 solos, LaCanne 6 solos and 2 tackles for loss while Joel Wortner, Willy Cornelius, Kevin Vlies and Dan Peters registered a half sack each.
Several of the Timberjacks will go on to play the inaugural WSFL vs. MSFL (Mid States Football League) all-star game on Saturday, November 10 at Memorial Field in Howards Grove. Kickoff is slated for 4pm.
Avenge Lone Loss2 col
Combining a rock solid defense with a 442 yard offensive punch enabled the Menominee Maroons to avenge their lone loss of the season with a 48-14 whipping of Kingsford in the Division 5 district title game Saturday.
The second straight post-season win sends the 10-1 Maroons into the regional finals on Saturday, November 9 hosting Clare at 1pm.
During the regular season, the Maroons came up on the short end of a 14-13 loss to GNC champion Kingsford on the Flivvers home field. The results were certainly different Saturday as Menominee grabbed a 10-0 first quarter lead then gradually pulled away in the fourth quarter.
The kids were extremely ready to take Kingsford on and continue to make me proud with their effort, determination and overall excellent play. Our defense really played well and based on the first game, we were able to contain their top runner in Reed Larson and allow just 65 yards on 24 carries. That is a big difference from the first game where he had 167 yards rushing, Menominee coach Joe Noha said. We dont use the terms revenge or payback, but just execute what we can do and do it well. I am really happy with the results from Saturday.
Leading the way for the Maroons was junior tailback Devon Harris with 177 yards in total offense and a hand in three scores. The elusive Harris gained 165 yards rushing on 22 carries and two touchdowns while connecting on 6 of 14 passes for 112 yards and a score.
Adding plenty of punch to the Maroon attack was junior fullback James Brown with 10 carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns, Justin Brilinski 54 yards in 4 rushes and a score while glue-fingered end Bryan Hines added 2 catches for 44 yards and a teedee.
We had a lot of individuals stand out in the game, but Harris continues to do a lot of things well. He gets to the outside running to extend plays, finds receivers in space and blocks well off the edge. He is one of those players that can go the distance on any play, Noha added.
After going three and out to open the game, the Maroons found the comforts of the end zone on drive number two. Hines set things up with a 16 yard punt return to the Menominee 49, then watched Brown bust loose for points on the next play. Evan Pohlman, who played a key role in the win, booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead at the 8:25 mark of period one.
Menominee stretched its lead to 10-0 with 1:19 remaining in the opening frame as Pohlman booted a 32 yard field goal to cap a 9 play, 55 yard drive. After Harris peeled off 11 yards to the 14, the Maroon offense went backwards on two incomplete passes and a loss of a yard on a run by the tailback.
Kingsford answered on the ensuing series, driving 55 yards in 8 plays before Sean Ryan scored from 12 yards out. Gabe Swanson split the uprights on the PAT for a 10-7 Maroon edge.
With its lead trimmed, the Maroons got back in the scoring mode. Hines returned the kickoff 38 yards to the 43 as Menominee put together an 8 play scoring march. Harris and Mike Kinsey hooked up for 8 yards on third down to the Kingsford 46 then added an 8 yard strike to Shaun Sullivan to the 38. Two plays later Hines outjumped a defender for a 33 yard gain to the Kingsford 3. Harris ended the march two plays later on a 1 yard run and a 17-7 cushion (7:16).
Unfortunately, the lead didnt last long as Kingsford used the first of two interceptions and a return of 12 yards by Aidan Wienke to stop a Maroon drive. The Flivvers made the most of the miscue by reaching the end zone 6 plays later as Larson blasted in from 3 yards out for a 17-14 game (0:43).
It looked like that would be the halftime score, but the Maroons still had time for another teedee. Starting at their own 43, Menominee needed 5 plays to pad the margin to 24-14 at intermission. With the Kingsford defense thinking pass, Harris took off on a designed run and rambled 35 yards to the end zone with only 8.6 ticks remaining. Pohlmans kick gave the Maroons a much needed 10 point bulge at the break.
Off all the big plays in the game, I think that run by Harris just before the half was the most important touchdown. Kingsford had just scored and we came back with that late teedee to go up by 10 points again and take all the momentum into halftime, Noha added.
On their first possession of the second half, the Maroons relied on the ground game to make their way downfield. Harris and Brown shared the carries as Menominee moved to the Kingsford 24. Thats when trouble set in as the Maroons went to the air trying to hit Hines on a post route. Standing in his way was the 64 safety Wienke, who nabbed the errant throw at the one and returned it to the 27.
Despite getting sidetracked early, Menominee regrouped and put three more points on the board after forcing a punt. Starting at their own 38, the Maroons traveled all the way to the Kingsford 7 before getting stopped. Harris fired completions of 30 yards to Brown then added a 18 yard flip to Sullivan to the 14. Three plays later the Maroons were left 7 yards short of the end zone. No problem. Bring in Pohlman, who calmly kicked a 25 yard field goal for a 27-14 edge (3:27).
Taking that two touchdown cushion into the fourth quarter, the Maroons put the game away with three more scores.
Another one of those big plays that Noha was referring to earlier, took place early in the final frame as linebacker Brown snagged a pass in the flat area and raced 76 yards to the end zone. Pohlmans kick extended the upper hand to 34-14 with 11:07 remaining.
Trailing by 20 points and facing a fourth and one at its own 18, Kingsford decided to go for it. Bad move as the Maroon defense got penetration and held Larson to no gain.
From the Flivver 18, Menominee needed two plays to pad the cushion to 41-14 as Harris and Hines hooked up from 15 yards out (8:14).
The final Maroon score saw Brilinski cap an 80 yard drive with a 24 yard scamper.
Looking ahead to the regional title clash Saturday against 9-2 Clare, Noha said... we played them in 2009 playoffs and lost 20-7. They run the veer offense, throw the ball and do a lot of things well. We have to continue to play good defense, because as you advance in the playoffs you run into better teams. We must also find ways to score.
