Squirts Open Hockey Season
The Thunder Squirts opened their season on October 27 in Marquette with two hard fought losses, skating short handed with only 8 skaters. The Squirts fell 9-5 in the first game with Carson Collins scoring 2 goals and 1 goal each coming from Quinn Finley, Gage Schutt, and Brandon Bruning. Assists were contributed by Bruning, Collins, and Jacob Pantti. The afternoon match ended in a 8-2 loss as Collins found the net twice with assists coming from Ethan Pullen and Brandon Bruning.
On Sunday the Squirt team traveled to Escanaba for a pair of games, losing the first 6-5 in the final minute. Quinn Finley earned his first playmaker patch as a Squirt with 4 assists, Ethan Pullen added 2 assists with Collins and Pantti adding 1 each. Goals in the game were attributed by Collins with 2, Zack Wallin, Brandon Bruning, and Finley one each. With goalie Dylan Ziemke absent, Niya Patenaude stepped in and played great with 16 saves in the net.
The second game the Thunder ran into a hot goalie in a 4-0 loss. The Thunder outshot Esky 34-8 as Patenaude made 4 saves.
The Thunder have 4 games this weekend at the Thunder Dome against Shawano on Saturday and Escanaba Sunday.
With the bench providing 57 points, the UW-Marinette Buccaneers claimed their season opener Monday with an 87-71 win over host Fox Valley Tech.
Larry Brazil paced the Bucs with 22 points, Josh Corry added 20 and Brandon Roby 19. The winners made 29 of 75 shots (39%), 24-40 free throws and held a 58-53 rebounding edge.
Marinette will travel to Manitowoc for a co-ed doubleheader Wednesday starting at 5:30pm. The home opener is slated for Saturday, November 10 against Waukesha with the women playing at 1pm and men 3pm. Marinette will entertain Marshfield on Monday, November 12 (5:30/7:30pm) before completing a busy opening week at Marathon on November 14.
