Roy L. Augustine

Roy Lincoln Augustine, 91, passed away Friday, Nov. 2 at NewCare in Crivitz, where he resided for the past three years. Prior to that he lived for eight years at the Adult Family Home of Jackie and Gary Polzin in Porterfield.

Born July 6, 1921 at the family farm he lived and worked there for many years. The only son of eight children born to Phillip and Mathilda (Brosig) Augustine, Town of Grover, Route 1, Pound he graduated 8th grade from Forest View School and did not pursue any further education due to his health.

He was a 10 year member of Little River 4-H Club at which time he enrolled in the Forestry Project. He received 200 free Norway Pine seedlings in 1934, the first to be planted next to Augustine Road on the five acre hilly plot. The next two years 8000 more trees were purchased and planted by hand by the family.

One row was left out for a toboggan slide, with a border of 30 high pines on each side and became a winter sport center known as “Augustine Hill.”

He loved to take his nephews and nieces to the river to teach them fishing, his favorite sport. Everyone knew him as the camera man as he was never without a camera and he cherished his albums. He also loved music of all kinds, especially polkas. Cards was one of his big pastimes.

A great fan of the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers, he was a life member of St. Leo’s Catholic Parish of Pound, later St. Ann’s Catholic Church of Coleman and the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are seven sisters, Faye Winnekins and Hazel Hammett, both of Marinette, Violet Frank of Peshtigo, Rosemary (Otto, jr.) Risner and Phyllis (Kenneth) Casper, both of Pound, Thora (Kenneth, sr.) Zeitler of Monroe and Malva Berth of Coleman. Also surviving are Jackie Polzin of Porterfield, a caregiver, friend and guardian and many nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, George Winnekins, Emmet Frank, Clarence Berth, James Hammett and a long time friend and nephew-in-law, Glen Polzin.

Friends called at St. Anne Catholic Church, Coleman on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Fr. Celestine Byekwaso officiated and burial was at Forest Home Cemetery, Marinette. A memorial fund is established for Coleman Rescue Squad.
