John Strom John David Strom, 78, died in Seattle, Wash. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 after a fall resulting in severe brain trauma.
Born Dec. 20, 1934 in Menominee, he was the youngest of four children born to Reuben and Nell Strom. He earned a bachelor degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin and went on to McCormack Theological Seminary, obtaining a master’s degree in Divinity. He met his wife, Mary Thornton while attending McCormack in the Fall of 1959 and they were married on Aug. 6, 1960.
He was ordained and served in Presbyterian churches in North Dakota and Nebraska, but after five years, he grew to understand that he saw his work in a more sacramental light. Feeling called to the Episcopal Church, he was ordained a priest in 1966 and served in that capacity for the next 31 years in parishes in Nebraska, Wisconsin (where he also served as prison chaplain at the Wisconsin State Penitentiary), Michigan and Ohio, including his final two parishes, All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Michigan and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Akron, Ohio. He and his wife were also actively involved in Marriage Encounter.
The couple moved to Arizona after retirement and frequently traveled to visit children living in Washington, Alaska and England. After retirement he began a prayerful journey that led him into the Roman Catholic Church. From 2006 to 2012 they lived at Holy Trinity Monastery as residential Oblates, doing volunteer work for the Monastery. After he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2011, they decided to move to the Seattle area to be closer to family. During his lifetime he enjoyed reading, writing, playing golf, woodworking, gardening, music and tall trees.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary; children, Wendy Nystrom of Kenmore, Wash., Brian (Christopher Bernthal) Strom of Folkestone, England, Karen Medkeff of Anchorage, Ak. and Debra (Thaddeus) Williamson and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death in 1995 by a son, Christopher Strom and a son-in-law Jeff Medkeff in 2008 and siblings, Nancy Erickson, Gerald Strom and Donny Strom.
The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 732 18th Ave. E., Seattle, Wash. Memorial contributions may be made for Parkinson’s research, to the Michael J. Fox Foundation or to Holy Trinity Monastery, St. David, AZ. Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Funeral Home, Seattle, Wash. assisted the family.
