Malecki Family Of Pound Gets Century Farm Award

The Malecki family, W8719 West 2nd Road, Pound, was honored at the 2012 Wisconsin State Fair for their Century Farm.

The award program began in 1948, as part of Wisconsin’s Centennial Celebration, a 23 day state fair. The program honors families who have had continuous ownership of their farm or home for 100 years or more.

On Aug. 7, the State Fair recognized 133 Century Farm and Home families. Over 8,700 century farms and homes have been honored since the start of the program.

Marinette County’s new century farm began in 1912 with owners Stanley and Rose Malecki. In succeeding years, their children Otillia, Wanda, Stella and Peter were born. Peter and his wife, Virginia took over ownership and operation of the farm in 1953 and their children Linda, Howard, Sandra, Mark and Nancy all grew up on the farm. Mark and his wife, Jackie now own and operate the farm with their children, Andy, Austin and Morgan. These children are the fourth generations on the farm located on the south edge of the Town of Beaver.

Originally Stanley Malecki with his brother and parents operated farmland on the south end of Oconto County, near Little Suamico in the early years of the 20th century. He with his siblings and parents had emigrated from Poland in the late 1800’s making their way through Pennsylvania and Illinois on their way to Wisconsin.

Stanley, being young and muscular had the daily chore of pumping water for the dairy cows. There was no creek running through their land so when he heard of a farm for sale at White Potato Lake near the western end of the Town of Beaver in Marinette County, he boarded a train for Beaver and walked six miles to inspect the farm.

Finding it not to his liking, Malecki hiked backed to Beaver, at one point walking on top of a gravel esker that courses through town. He was met by the owner of the property, John Will, who inquired of his doings. Stanley Malecki stated, “I’m looking for a farm” and Will replied, “This one is for sale”.

The sale is recorded in the Marinette County land records on May 4, 1912. Three 40’s with buildings were purchases for $6,200. Additional personal property for cows was purchased for $1,500. The north forty included the South Branch of the Beaver Creek and a generous water supply for a dairy herd.

The historical account was provided by Stanley’s late son, Peter, who is the father of Mark Malecki.

Today, Mark and wife Jackie and family operate a dairy herd of 38 cows on his grandfather’s original land. The farm size has expanded in acreage. In 2008 the farm was certified organic and milk is shipped to Organic Valley Coop in LaFarge.
