Peshtigo Tops Marinette 43-28
Issue Date: November 20, 2012
Connecting on 52% of their field goals (16-31), the Peshtigo Bulldogs (2-0, 1-0) stepped off the conference courts to down host Marinette 43-28 Thursday night. Peshtigo jumped out to a 26-12 halftime edge, weathered a minor Marinette rally in period three, before closing out the game on a 10-6 run.,
We controlled the pace of the game and shot the ball extremely well, but need to get more shots off. Marinette switched its defensive pressure in the third quarter that changed the tempo, but we didnt react to it quick enough. We have to recognize those changes and adapt, Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said.
The Bulldogs got a big shooting boost from senior guard Matt Borkovec with 12 points and 3 steals. Borkovec drilled a pair of three point shots in the opening frame while adding two free throws for 8 early points.
Borkovecs early threes set the tempo for us...wanted to get off to a good start and did, Spaulding added.
Jordan Berth tacked on 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals while Zack Neumann chipped in with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
The top scorer for Marinette was senior guard Derek Klegin with 14 points. Coming off an opening night barrage of 33 points against Mishicot, Klegin ran into a stingy Peshtigo defense and netted just 5 points in the first half.
With Borkovec firing in a pair of treys and Berth controlling the paint area, Peshtigo jumped out to a commanding 11-2 edge at the 3:14 mark of period one.
The Marines managed to close within 11-7 on free throws by Gage Raminger, Austin Wright and Klegin before Borkovec struck with a pair of charity tosses at the 0:47 mark for a 14-7 edge.
Klegin drove the lane to get Marinette within 14-9 before Gunner Kinney found the mark on a trey and Borkovec added a jumper for a 20-11 lead (5:54). Moments later Neumann hit a jumper, Berth used a spin move for a layup and AJ Woller dropped in a rebound for a 26-12 halftime spread.
With the Marinette offense struggling, rookie coach Nick Semenas decided to turn up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and it worked. Slowing down the Bulldogs with fullcourt pressure, Marinette closed within 30-21 as Klegin weaved through for a trio of buckets and Brian Klumb converted a three-point play.
The Marines couldnt get any closer as Dakota Marino tallied a trey to put Peshtigo on top 33-22 heading into the fourth quarter.
Continuing to control the tempo, Peshtigo spread the floor and worked some time off the clock. Point guard Neumann hit two free throws and a pair of jumpers to key a 10-6 edge over the final 8 minutes.
Two free throws each by Marcus Maguire and Brad Thielen along with a jumper by Klegin enabled the Marines to close the final gap to 43-28.
Marinette made 7 of 24 shots (29%) to go along with 14-18 free throws. Off the backboards the Marines were outrebounded 23-10, turning the ball over 15 times and forcing 16 miscues.
We had quite a few turnovers in the game, but most of those came in the third quarter against their press. Right now we dont have a true point guard, but are doing it by committee with Neumann, Kinney and Borkovec, Spaulding concluded.
Marinette won the jayvee game 41-38.
The Marines will host Manitowoc Lincoln Tuesday while Peshtigo will have off until entertaining Bonduel November 29.
