Suring Clobbers Coleman For 2-0 Start In M-O Cage

The Suring Eagles, a pre-season favorite to battle it out for top honors along with Peshtigo, had their offense in high gear in clobbering Coleman 80-38 Thursday night.

The hardwood hammering improves the Eagles to 2-0 in the M-O Conference as reigning player of the year, Jay Tienor, paced a quartet of scorers in double figure scoring with 27 points.

Suring has some company atop the 9-team circuit as Crivitz moved to 2-0 with a hard earned 43-39 win over Gillett. The league’s only other unbeaten team, Peshtigo, had the night off from conference play and knocked off Marinette for a 2-0 start overall.

Suring Clams

Coleman 80-38

In the early going of Thursday night’s game at home against the high flying Suring Eagles, it looked like the young Coleman Cougars (0-2) might be able to hold their own against a team that most are assuming will be in contention for the M-O title at the end of this year’s basketball season.

No, it didn’t look like the game was going to end in a Suring blowout when Coleman’s Zach Zeitler calmly drained a three pointer to pull his team to within a pair at 12-10.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, Zeitler’s triple early in the opening frame was one of only a few highlights on the evening for the home team as the Eagles (2-0) put the pedal to the floor following that 12-10 readout and never looked back, going on to rout the Cougars 80-38.

“We’re very young and inexperienced at the varsity level.” said Coleman head coach Tim Forner. “So patience will be needed on my part to let these young men develop early on and then we’ll see what we have down the road.”

The Cougars went from playing with swagger in the game’s opening minutes to mistake-plagued basketball quickly after pulling within two. All of a sudden, they couldn’t seem to get out of their own way and the Eagles took advantage by stepping up their play and in the process, stepping out to a 29-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Nearly three minutes went by in the second frame before Coleman managed to put another point on the board. But by then, the Eagles had jumped out to an insurmountable 33-11 lead.

“These boys work hard every day in practice, which will help with the development of our team,” said Forner. “Everything is new to them, on offense especially. But no excuses for our performance Thursday. We need to make big strides on the defensive side of the ball immediately. We’ll get back to work this week and continue to get better.”

Leading the way for Suring in the win was Jay Tienor, who seemed to be doing a bit of everything as the Eagles smothered the Cougars on both ends of the floor. Tienor turned in a game-high 27 points and hit on five of six shots from the charity stripe. Dan Sweda added 16 points, Dillon Kempen chipped in 13 and Blake Strehlow scored 11.

Crivitz Clips

Gillett 43-39

Breaking away from a 22-22 halftime deadlock and 29-all after three periods, Crivitz claimed its second straight M-O win beating Gillett 43-39. Crivitz pulled out the victory with a 14-10 fourth quarter run.

Dominic Basso sparked Crivitz with 11 points, Jake Wiedemeier added 8 and Shearer 6.

Top scorer for Gillett was Aaron Smith with 15 points while Clint Long added 9.

Balanced Attack Keys

63-24 Niagara Victory

After netting just 16 points Tuesday against Peshtigo, the Niagara Badgers get their offense untracked to turn back visiting Lena 63-24.

“We did a much better job offensively by cutting down on our turnovers. We also shot the ball extremely well....rebounding edge was also a huge factor,” Niagara coach Jim Hoogland said.

Balanced scoring was the key for the Badgers as 7 players made their way into the scoring column. Jordan Zawada topped the winners with 20 points, Joey Swanson added 12 and Colin Anderson 11.

Niagara took control of this outing early, racing to a 34-8 halftime cushion and never looking back. In the opening period, coach Hoogland’s cagers ran off a 15-5 spurt, highlighted by a trio of buckets from Anderson along with 5 points from Zawada.

Keeping their offense in high gear, the Badgers unloaded a 19-3 second quarter surge to enjoy that 26 point halftime cushion. Zawada connected on his second trey of the game and tallied 7 points in the run while TJ Liebergen chipped in with 5 points in the quarter.

The Badgers opened the second half on an 18-10 charge as Swanson shredded the nets for 5 buckets and 10 points while Zawada added 8 points.

Taking a 52-18 lead into the fourth quarter, Niagara capped the lopsided win with an11-6 edge.

Niagara connected on 28 of 60 field goals (47%) and owned a 33-15 rebounding edge with Zawada hauling down 11 boards.

Justin Heimke paced the 4-person Lena scoring with 16 points, Joe Jagiello added 4, Keegan Imig and Roy O’Harrow 2 each.

Lena made just 9 of 32 shots (28%).

Cavaliers Stun

Wausaukee 62-53

In an early season surprise, STAA knocked off the Wausaukee Rangers 62-53. Keifer Powers sparked the upset with 27 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter when the Cavaliers used the free throw line to seal the win.

On the short end of a 45-41 score heading into the final frame, the Cavaliers connected on 12 of 14 free throws to run off a 17-12 edge for the win. Powers made 7 of 8 throws in the winning surge.

Jameson Bardowski was the number two scorer for STAA with 14 points, including a pair of threes.

Aaron Schlies fired in 21 points for the Rangers, Beau DeLaet 8 and Ryan Nystrom 7.
