Goodman-Pembine Gals Start Fast In 38-21 Opening Victory Over Wausaukee

The Lady Rangers couldn’t overcome a chilly start to last Saturday night’s season opening game against Goodman-Pembine, which handed host Wausaukee a 38-21 defeat that was sparked by a 10-1 opening-quarter run.

“We just never really got it going until the fourth quarter tonight,” said Wausaukee head coach Jon Betts. “We didn’t hit our shots. They really packed the paint, especially in the first half, and just dared us to shoot it from outside. If you can’t knock those down, your offense isn’t going to work. In the first quarter, if we’re able to knock down a few of those wide open shots, it brings them out to the perimeter a little bit and we can work a little bit in the paint.”

After the lopsided opening frame, a bit of bad luck, or maybe tenacious defense, ruined what could have been a big play for Wausaukee as Krista Hilpert (six points, two assists) stole a Patriots pass and headed down court for a fast break layup. But a Goodman-Pembine defender closed in on Hilpert at the last moment and altered her shot in such a manner that it got stuck between the side of the rim and the glass, halting play and leaving the Wausaukee point total at one.

It was that kind of night for the Lady Rangers as far as shooting went.

Overall, they were seven of 38 for 18% from the floor and only 12% in the first half on a two of 16 effort. The first Wausaukee field goal didn’t come until three and a half minutes left in the second quarter when Hilpert hit a three pointer to put the score at 12-4.

The Patriots were led by a strong performance, particularly in the paint, for Courtney Goyak, who finished the game with 13 points, followed closely by Rachel Stankevich’s 10 and eight from Marissa Moloney.

“This one certainly wasn’t pretty,” said Betts, whose team picked up 12 points to Goodman-Pembine’s 14 in the final quarter of play. “But I thought we held our own defensively. We’ve got a lot of energy and I thought the girls hustled. We weren’t giving them three, four shots at a time. We did a good job on the boards for the most part. Our achilles heel is our perimeter shooting though.”

In addition to Hilpert’s numbers, Wausaukee got another six points, three steals and two rebounds from Sara Wickman while Crysta Clark turned in three points, six boards, two assists and two steals.

Wausaukee won the JV game 19-17.

Coleman Whips

Wabeno In Opener

A big second half charge sparked the Coleman gals to a 37-19 opening win over host Wabeno. Owning a 15-12 halftime lead, Coleman unloaded second half scoring outbursts of 12-1 and 10-6 to secure the victory.

Lindsey Kerr paced the Cougars with 10 points, Makenzie Sadowski and Abby Bieber added 8 each.

“Our halfcourt defense protected an early lead for a road win...7 out of players scored in a sloppy opening game for both,” Coleman coach Jeff Bronson said.

Cougars No Match

For Oconto 59-26

With Laken James tossing in a game high 21 points, Oconto had no trouble disposing of visiting Coleman Saturday 59-26.

The Blue Devils took control early, racing to a 21-4 first quarter edge and never looked back. Oconto held a 33-12 lead at the midway point before capping the win with a 26-15 second half charge.

Makenzie Sadowski netted 12 points for Coleman while Bieber added 6.

Wolverines Open With

Win Over Three Lakes

After a disappointing 2011-12 campaign saw them finish the season winless, the Crivitz Wolverines tipped off this year’s action with a hard-fought 33-32 win over Three Lakes in non-conference play Monday night.

In victory, one that will no doubt pay dividends for the Wolverines’ frame of the mind early on this season, Crivitz was led by Jennifer Kempka’s 18 points, followed by six from Theresa Orlando.

The two teams were tied at 22 heading into the game’s final quarter, one that saw the Wolverines edge Three Lakes with an 11-10 scoring effort.

Peyton Radai led the Bluejays with 12 points.

STAA Stymied By

Size of Stockbridge

The STAA Cavalettes couldn’t figure out a solution to the pair of six footers patrolling the lane for Stockbridge on Monday night as they fell to the visiting Indians 49-17.

Stockbridge’s Arissa Geiser, a 6’1” center, led all scorers with 19 points while teammate Nicole Napler had 10 points. McKenzie DuPont, another 6’0” paint presence, tallied eight points in the win.

The Cavalettes, who were as close as 6-4 in the opening minutes of this game, were paced by Taylor Wilson’s seven points followed closely by six for Riley Schultz.
