Citizens Protest Logging Operation In Badger Park

Public Comment Time in the Peshtigo Parks and Recreation Committee meeting Tuesday evening, March 8 brought strong and sometimes emotionally charged protests from about 10 residents, mostly people living near Badger Park, about the logging operation underway in the park.

Chairman Harold Grandaw commented at the beginning that the issue was not on the agenda and the committee would not respond nor act on it. This limitation was brushed aside as a general discussion got underway, including some explanation from logger Eugene Frank about modern sustainable forestry practices which he uses in his business.

Lori Brabant was distressed at the sight of mature trees being cut, and said 130 foot white pines have been removed, and said it ruins the look of the park, adding, "We'll never see it again. A white pine can live for 300 years!"

Don Williams, who lives at 470 Aubin St. said he looked out his window for 27 years at the pines, and charged, "You have gone ahead and raped it! What are you thinking? What are you thinking!"

Julie Jensen said "I spend a lot of time in the park. I can't imagine what anyone was thinking! She spoke of owls, eagles and pileated woodpeckers inhabiting the big trees, and said some of those trees are at only one half of their lifespan. "It did not have to be cleaned up!" she told the committee, adding there is a "huge mess" on the west side and charged that no forester was consulted about the project, and a timber cruiser for the logger was the only consultant.

"It can never again be what it was in my lifetime nor my kids!" she continued.

She mentioned a big cottonwood treee, 100 years old, that fell to the chainsaw. As to cleanup, she said the cottomwood would stump sprout, as will the willows, and refered also to "huge, beautiful old hemlocks," and added, "Nobody cared enough to stop it! I'm so angry! Look at the contract! It says "dead and dying! It's gone forever!" She said a big maple was chainsawed down, and the logger told her all the hardwoods would be cut. Jensen has a degree in Forestry from the University of Minnesota.

Rick Thill asked "Was there a forum? Was anything in the paper?"

(The Times did report committee and board action approving a cleanup and removal of dead and dying trees that were unsightly and could pose a hazard for persons walking about in the park.)

Alderman Al Krezensky commented, "I was not on the committee but I voted for this. I feel I was misled. I was told a DNR forester would be consulted."

Mayor Dale Berman suggested a temporary halt.

Kate Lenz, who is a DNR Forester, said she spoke only as a private citizen, and noted different points of view are common regarding forest management.

She said Grandaw had approached her about consulting for the park cleanup, but she said she was too busy during December, when he asked her.

Frank then spoke about hazards of falling trees, and Jensen spoke up again "What you've done is not selective cutting!"

Frank said he is expecting two groups of students to visit the site in the morning to see the process going on, and he invited all those present to come and see for themselves at about 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9.

In other matters and before puiblic comment, the committee approved permission for bands to perform in Badger Park, approved advertising for summer help for park and recreation programs, and selected McCarthy-Sorensen of Marinette for T-shirts for summer recreation programs.
