Routs Rule In M-O

Routs were the name of the game this week on the M-O Conference hardwood courts as five contests were decided by 24 points or more.

League leading Suring, which switched a game against Niagara to Friday night in order to play at the same site as the girls team, recorded a pair of easy wins. Coach Gary Regal’s troops whipped Niagara 52-28 then trounced Oconto County rival Gillett 65-21.

That was only the start of the routs. Peshtigo (4-0, 2-0) held winless Lena scoreless for the entire first half in a 72-12 win, Niagara clobbered Crivitz 65-34 while Wausaukee proved to be too much for Coleman 86-34.

League play resumes on Friday, December 7 with three games, including Peshtigo heading to Crivitz, STAA at Coleman and Wausaukee hosting Gillett.

The key conference clash and first place in the M-O circuit will be up for grabs when Suring visits Peshtigo on Thursday, December 13. Suring is still without the services of senior forward Cody Christensen, who broke his wrist during the football playoffs.

Suring Routs

Niagara 52-28

Owning the upper hand in every quarter, the Suring cagers cruised to a 52-28 conference win over host Niagara Friday. Suring built up a 29-12 halftime cushion before wrapping up the win with a 23-16 second half spurt.

Blake Strehlow topped the Eagles with 14 points, including a pair of threes in the first quarter, Jay Tienor added 12, Dillon Kempen 9 and Tyler Fisher 8.

Jordan Zawada netted 8 points and 8 rebounds for Niagara, Zach Zychowski 7 pints and Colin Anderson 6.

“Suring used a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap to create 18 turnovers and hold us to 32% shooting from the floor,” Niagara coach Jim Hoogland said.

Suring finished with a 19-37 shooting mark (51%) and held a 39-27 rebounding edge. Niagara connected on 13 of 35 shots.

Balanced Scoring

Keys Suring Win

With 9 of 11 players making their way into the scoring column, Suring notched its third straight win besting Gillett 65-21.

This game was over early. Real early!

Suring ran off a 19-4 first quarter then tacked on a 22-2 second period spurt to enjoy a comfortable 41-6 halftime cushion.

Creo VanBellinger topped Suring with 16 points, including four 3’s in the second quarter.

Blake Strehlow added 13 points and three 3’s, Dan Sweda 10 and Jay Tienor 9. Suring found the mark for nine treys in the lopsided win.

Shane Anderson and Clint Long netted 6 points each for Gillett.

Defensive Dominates

As Dogs Roll 72-11

Tossing a shutout for the entire first half, Peshtigo barely broke a sweat in leveling Lena 72-12.

Coach Ryan Spaulding's hardwood hounds built up a 38-0 halftime cushion before capping the win with a 34-12 second half surge.

A total of 11 Bulldogs registered points, sparked by a 16 point and 7 rebound performance from junior forward Jordan Berth. Zach Neumann was the number two point producer with 14 to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals, Darius Dohl 8 points and Matt Borkovec 7.

Peshtigo received 23 points off the bench, including 4 points and 6 rebounds from Derek Koronkiewicz .

The Bulldogs found the mark on 29-56 shots (52%), a perfect 12-12 free throws and held a commanding 39-7 rebounding edge.

Roy O’Harrow paced Lena with 7 points.

In the jayvee game, Peshtigo won 57-8 as Austin Noffke scored 10 points and Robert Dizor 4.

Rangers Run Past

Coleman 86-34

Getting out of the gate quickly, the Wausaukee Rangers evened off their league mark at 1-1 with an 86-34 pasting of Coleman.

Owning the upper hand in every quarter, Wausaukee cruised to a 38-18 halftime cushion. The first half proved to be just a warm up as coach John Ranallo’s troops wrapped up the victory with a 48-16 second half charge.

James Kramer and Ryan Nystrom shook free for 19 points each, Zach Orlando added 15, Beau DeLaet and Aaron Schlies 9 each while Austin Guarniere added 8 points.

Kramer burned the Coleman defense for 8 points in the first and fourth quarters while Nystrom tallied 16 in the second half. Long range bombing Orlando tossed in 3 of the 4 treys for Wausaukee, which made 17 of 30 free throws.

Austin Malecki scored 9 points for Coleman while Zach Zietler and Blake Margis added 6 each.

Second Half Charge

Sparks Niagara 65-34

This game was a tale of two halfs as host Niagara rallied from a 23-21 halftime deficit to defeat Crivitz 65-34. Over the final two periods, the Badgers used fullcourt pressure to spark a 44-11 scoring run and cruise to the win.

Jordan Zawada paced the Badgers with 23 points and 11 rebounds, Joey Swanson and Zach Zychowski added 8 points each while TJ Liebergen chipped in with 6.

“After a close first half, we took control of the game by outscoring Crivitz 22-2 in the third quarter. Our fullcourt pressure defense was the difference maker,” Badger coach Jim Hoogland said.

Niagara made 24 of 42 shots (57%), held a 36-20 rebounding edge and totaled 14 assists in the game.

Zawada shouldered the scoring load in the third quarter with 11 points, including a pair of threes, then added 8 more in the final frame. Liebergen and Zychowski also chipped in with 4 points each in the game turning third quarter.

Ben Fischer fired in 9 points for Crivitz, AJ Garcia 7 while Colton Lange and Jake Sawinski added 6 points each.

Crivitz finished with a 13-47 shooting mark (28%) and turned the ball over 10 times compared to 17 for Niagara.

Niagara claimed the jayvee game 51-45 behind 25 points from Adam Parent.
