Runner-Up Finish For Coleman

With three grapplers putting together gold winning performances, the Coleman Cougars claimed the runner-up spot at the 10-team Shawano Holiday Classic Saturday.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood was first with 471 points followed by Coleman 454, Bonduel 428, Rhinelander 427, New London 301, Adams-Friendship 233, Shawano 208, Peshtigo 185, Clintonville 143 and Antigo 123.

Sparking Coleman were first place winners Marc Lansin at 132 pounds, Trevor Seewald 152 and Mason Mergener 160.

“We wrestled very well on Saturday taking second place, only 17 points out of first considering we only had 12 wrestlers scoring points for us, forfeiting two weights,” Coleman coach Kevin Casper said. “We had three champions in Marc Lansin, Trevor Seewald and Mason Mergener.”

After a first round bye, Lansin used two pins along with an 18-3 technical fall to move into the finals. Taking on M-O Conference foe, DJ Messenger of Peshtigo in the title match, Lansin registered a 5:26 pin.

“For a sophomore Lansin is wrestling really well and getting better every time he steps on the mat. He did an excellent job in the finals against Messenger by keeping on the offensive and picking up a pin,” Casper said.

Title number two for Coleman went to Seewald, who strung together three pins and a major decision for the title. Working his way along the 152 pound mat class, Seewald needed 79 seconds for his first win, 23 ticks in round three, 29 in the fourth round and 72 seconds in the semifinals. Meeting Andrew Moser of New London in the finals, Seewald posted a 9-1 victory.

“Trevor had four pins leading up to the finals and won by a major decision against a very good wrestler from New London,” Casper commented.

The 160 pound title was won by Mergener on the strength of 3 pins and an 11-3 major decision in round four. In the finals, Mergener held off Braxton Potrykus of Wittenberg-Birnamwood in overtime 6-4

“Mason had probably the best match of the night in the finals against Potrykus, winning in overtime and getting a takedown to win. Mason is a very smart wrestler that has great hips and did a very good job throughout the match of staying in great position and taking advantage of his scoring opportunities,” Casper said.

Defending state champion Isaac Nowak dropped a 9-4 title match to Connor Johnson of Rhinelander at 195 pounds.

“Isaac lost a very hard fought championship match to an undefeated wrestler from Rhinelander,” Casper added.

Five Cougars claimed third place medals in Jackson Margis (138), Kevin Lansin (145), Dexter Karban (170) and CJ Pillath (220).

Finishing fifth were freshman Derick Teteak (106) and sophomore Brandon Champagne (120) while Rich Geimer was 6th at 182.

Following Messenger to the awards stand for Peshtigo were fourth place finishers Bryan Shevy (120) and Hunter Madden (126), 5th place Josh Jansen (195) and sixth Brady Parrish (138) and Drake Koenigs (285).

Beschta Claims 220

Title At Invitational

Sam Beschta of Lena-STAA claimed top honors in the 220 pound weight class at the Willard Schmidt Scramble in Green Bay Saturday.

Beschta used a trio of pins and a 14-7 decision to bring home the gold medal. In the finals, Beschta put Steve Fishler of Green Bay West/Southwest on his back in 4:34.

The Titans also got a pair of 5th place finishes from Dom Ramirez (152) and Mike Kallies (285) while Blaik Fischer was 7th at 170 pounds.

Lena-STAA came in last place at the 17-team invitational, which was won by Chilton with 476.5 points.

Totaling 259.5 points for 8th place, Oconto saw Brandon Tousey earn top honors in the 152 pound weight class. Earning third place were Blake Bostwick (106) and Elton Kelsey (138).

Gillett-Suring 8th

At Kewaunee Meet

Paced by fourth place finishes from Hunter Egge (106) and Garret Kohls (113), Gillett-Suring had enough points to tie for 8th place with West DePere (94) at the Kewaunee Invitational Saturday.

Two Rivers won the meet with 302 and Seymour was second at 195.5.

Fifth place medals for Gillett-Suring grapplers went to Zach Moede (126), Jeremy Cibulka (132) and Bryce Cibulka (145). Claiming sixth place were Colin Weiss (138), Broden Bennen (195) and Tyler Herning (220).

Crivitz Clobbered

By Crandon 46-21

Notching just 4 wins, Crivitz fell to state ranked Crandon Thursday 46-21.

The powerful Cardinals were victorious in 7 of the first 8 bouts and never looked back in cruising to the non-league victory.

Crivitz registered a trio of pins...Tim Sotka 3:13 at 126, Dan Tomaszewski needed 42 seconds to put Grant Hoyt on his back in the 182 bout while heavyweight Zach Timblin won in 4:27.

The only other win for Crivitz saw Joe Rodriquez beat Grant Murray 8-1 at 220 pounds.

Forfeits Send Peshtigo

Past Sturgeon Bay 42-12

Taking advantage of five forfeits, Peshtigo topped visiting Sturgeon Bay Tuesday 42-12.

Eight other bouts were played out on the mats with the Bulldogs winning three as DJ Messenger posted a major decision at 132, Shane Marquardt 0:47 pin at 145 and Steven Strojny 1:25 pin in the 152 match.

Peshtigo wrestlers being awarded forfeits were Damon Vansleet 106, Derrik Maye 170, Josh Janssen 195, Trey Shepard 220 and heavyweight Andy Johnson.
